Tourist | Question/Advice-Needed NYE in Cape Town

Hi all. Coming down to Cape Town for New Years Eve at the start of a 2 week trip doing the Garden Route. Looking for activty and restaursnt ideas for NYE. We already have La Colombe booked for lunch so looking for somewhere more casual, vibey, and fun to celebrate and party.

We're in our early 30s, love food and drink, will party but not all night long and prefer cheesy music / karaoke / live bands, to more intense vibes.

Any suggestions welcome! I saw there was some NYE festival but that it has potential unsavoury links to gangs? Thanks in advance

An outdoor festival should provide you with a unique and memorable experience. Check out psymedia.co.za for a list of parties

A lovely two week trip along the Garden Route, ending with NYE in Cape Town... Well, that is a choice...

It is a captive audience pretty much wherever you go, so you will be paying through the nose regardless of the venue. I stopped doing things in town years ago, because it's just too much. For context, I'm 37 - maybe that explains why the mere thought of the prospect sounds harrowing.

I think a festival is probably going to be your best bet, just logistically. I wouldn't necessarily recommend bar hopping since every venue will have some sort of exorbitant entrance fee, and long queues to get in. Friends of mine have gone to some of the NYE parties over the last couple of years, and they seemed to enjoy it. I'd avoid the Waterfront.

Links to gangs? You mean the people organising the event? Phones do get pickpocketed inside venues from time to time, which I presume could be gang related, so just keep track of your things and you'll be fine.

Please note that if it is an outdoor venue, there is a very good chance that the wind will pick up towards the evening. If you haven't been to Cape Town in December, the wind can get fucking hectic. And consequently it can become chilly, so be sure to bring a warm layer with. Indoor venues are better, but depending on how warm it is, the venue could end up being a fucking oven.

Book your Uber in advance (like schedule it the day before), so surge pricing doesn't apply. It's also just more reliable to ensure you get a driver without having to wait forever. Sure, it takes some of the spontaneity out of the evening by setting a departure time, but it's better than wanting to go home and then not being able to find a damn Uber. Don't try to drive, there will likely be bumper to bumper traffic everywhere, and road blocks.

TL;DR I can't think of anything worse than NYE in Cape Town. Stick to a festival or curated event where everything is in one place.

Try Saint in Harrington Street.

Real value for money. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
