Do you ever feel like you are useless because you have no skill?

Hello everyone, I am 26 and I’ve been working at my company for close to three years. I currently work as a fleet supervisor and am responsible for everything around the trucks. I currently make 75K in the northeast, which isn’t enough for my wife and I to live comfortably. I often find myself down because I have no trade and no skill. I am in line for a promotion, but that will only put me at 90 K, which is not enough in my area. I have always been interested in exploring the concept of going into business for my self one day but at this point it doesn’t look likely as I have no skill. About once a month I go into these existential crisis about joining a training, school or something. I don’t know.

What’s the fastest way someone ruined their chances in an interview ?

Interviews can be stressful and sometimes the smallest slip up is enough to take someone out of the running. It could be something said in the first few minutes, a mistake in body language or even an attitude that turned the whole thing around. What’s the quickest way someone has blown their shot in an interview?

Advice How do I deal with age discrimination?

I’m 40. I finished a BS in Computer Science in 2024. I have 20 months of internship experience in the field. I have a BFA in Fine Arts from 2008.

My internship ran out and I wasn’t offered full employment. I’m having a tough time finding a job. I turned down a job last year because my job at my internship was supposed to be guaranteed and I didn’t want to move cross country if I didn’t need to.

I feel like age discrimination has been a huge problem but I don’t know how to get around it.

Advice Has anyone not been given a chance to move up in an organization, only to be successful elsewhere?

Long story short I have been with a company about a year. Have been promised a promotion for the last 6 months. In that time 8/10 off colleagues have left. We have a horrible manager. I’ve taken on so many AORs and have been working up to an additional 20 hours a week.

I feel instead of promoting me they are expecting me to work at the lesser rate forever and not give me the title change. I’ve started looking elsewhere. Last month I submitted my notice. All of a sudden now everything is “in motion” for me to move up they stated they were going to pair me with the training manager to get me ready for promotion this was said to be competed asap. That was 2 weeks ago and still nothing.

I turned down the alternate job and now seriously regret it. I will not make this mistake again.

Can anyone shed light on what they have experienced similar or advice on how to overcome this? I am interviewing for a new role again and this time I am not going to submit a notice. Any advice is welcome!

Advice How to navigate Internal politics as a low level employee?

I basically have two managers that has two different visions . I am reporting to both of them in a way . One manager is like the service line manager and the other is like the teams manager I’m currently on . They have two different visions or try to steer the ship in to two different directions . I’m basically stuck but I over work myself to make both of them happy . I have to deliver something for manager A and manager B . I don’t know how to resolve the issue !!

To be clear all of the work is in POC state and hence why the deliverables are not project managed and these two managers are super busy and I have tried inviting both to the same meeting and find out more but neither of them showed up .

My mental health also suffering and I have no one to talk about this who can sort it for me at the office .

Advice Does it make sense trying to change your field from legal studies to graphic design?

Upvotes

Hello, I am currently in the last year of a three-year degree in Legal Services (Global Law). I’m considering a change of field towards business communication through my master. I am mostly interested in working as graphic designer, in particular brand identity, but I’m not sure of the best path.

I’m considering three options:

A - Finish the three-year degree and then continue with a master’s degree in business communication, building a portfolio in parallel through courses and personal projects. I’m also looking at a master’s degree in brand communication.

B - Abandon the three-year degree and try to enter a degree course in Communication Design.

C - Finish the bachelor’s degree and then follow a professional course in graphic design.

I realise that option B is the most linear to acquire solid foundations, but it is more expensive and I feel like I wasted two years. I would like to understand if, with a legal-communicative profile, it is realistic to enter the field of communication and design, or if I am overestimating the possibilities?

I would appreciate practical advice from those who already work in the sector or have taken similar paths.

I can't do this, where do I go ?

I major in English language and literature. I graduated recently as the top of my class with a 3.9 GPA in the hopes of being picked up by some scholarship or something. Today was my first day as a substitute teacher, and I quit right away. It was the definition of humiliation. No academic focus, no academic substance, no academic anything, just babysitting a bunch of literal devils. My vocal cords are fucked from screaming and my fingers turned blue from knocking wood every two seconds. This is supposed to be where my degree leads me and it's just impossible to deal with. And even if I get a damn PhD wouldn't they still want years of experience before allowing me to teach older demographics? So the question now is did I just waste 4 years of my life only to go work in whatever job anyone can get? And where do I even go

I just got a job offer but it feels sus. I am a female 25 unmarried. Help?

So i applied for the role of Executive Assistant (or PA) in a startup, gave the interview and he selected me instantly. He was already impressed by my resume and was looking forward to the interview, i could feel that.

But the part where this gets shady is — all of his employees are working online and i will be the only female to be in the office with him. That too it's located in a different city than my hometown. He said he will pay for the travel expenses (flight tickets) but i will have to join immediately. Should I go forward with this role? Does anybody have any suggestions or opinions on this?

Advice How do you handle pressure from micro-managers? and prevent mistakes from panic

Upvotes

I'm sure a lot of people face this issue too. Not talking about pushy managers but micromanaging types of managers, mentors watching your every step. It's very hard to get things done correct as per company's SOP. Mistakes are more bound to happen. What's your take?

I’m 20 and confused about my career path, need advice help?

Upvotes

Hey I’m 20 (f) it’s been 2 years since I finished high school and right now I’m in my 3rd year of B.Com + also doing Company Secretary (CS). I had commerce in school and thought CS would be my thing but honestly it feels like I can’t do it anymore. The course literally demands 12–14 hrs of studying daily just to memorize stuff, and even then the passing % is always super low. Bhai and aaj mera result day tha and i failed like it was my 3rd attempt. so for the past few days I keep thinking maybe I should just switch my path. Like maybe get into coding, HTML, freelancing, or just something that’s more skill-based. The only catch is computers were never really my fav subject, but seeing how much money ppl are making in tech and freelancing, I feel like I should at least give it a shot I’m 20 and it feels like I’m stuck rn. Can y’all please suggest what options I can look into? And how do I even start if I wanna try coding/freelancing or something different? I really want to do something with my life and not feel like I’m wasting my time Would really appreciate any advice😭

If you had 2 years of free school (rent + bills paid), what would you study based on today’s job market?

I’m finishing up my military career after 9 years as a mechanic. Over time I realized that line of work isn’t for me (too much wasted time, but that’s another story).

I already have an associate’s in Information Technology with an A+ certification, and I’m working on my bachelor’s in Network Engineering plus more certs. I’ll be moving to Dallas at the end of the year. I know I can land an entry level IT job, and I’m not worried about pay right now, my focus is getting experience.

That said, I keep hearing that the job market is rough (partly feels like politics, but I get that some of it is real). So as a backup, I’ve been considering using the GI Bill to go to school. Something like radiology tech or medical equipment tech appeals to me since the medical field is always hiring, and I don’t see myself becoming a doctor or nurse.

What I’d like to know: If you had 2 years of school fully covered, tuition, rent, and bills, what career paths would you consider, especially ones people might overlook? I tend to prefer working more independently, but I can handle teamwork if needed. Just not sure I’d thrive in an office with 6 other people everyday all day per se

Advice "Airbnb for experiences, but with careers?"

I’ve been working on an idea and wanted to get some feedback. Imagine a platform where you could “rent a day” with a professional not in a weird way, but in the sense of shadowing them and experiencing their real day-to-day life.

For example: You spend a day with a chef, not just learning recipes, but actually being in the kitchen, watching how they manage chaos, prep, and create. Or you spend a day with an architect, seeing how their ideas move from sketch to reality.

The idea is to turn “theory” into “experience.” Instead of just watching YouTube videos or reading guides, you get to actually live a day in that world.

Do you think people would be interested in this? Would you personally want to “rent a day” with someone in a profession you admire or are curious about?

Advice With boss leaving, how should I approach the board and my next steps?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

The most magical thing has happened. My extremely toxic boss has taken a new job at a new company. I’m looking for advice on navigating the next steps with the board.

For a little more background— I work in niche role in governance that I only started last January. I have over 20 years of diverse experience though in the organizations which we govern. There are only four workers in our “company” and I’m the second on the flow chart.

I had major concerns my old boss was ruining my brand and within three months of taking this role I started looking for a new job. He didn’t hit timelines and didn’t care about people’s time. He was disorganized and on a power trip. He lied, exploded whenever anyone questioned him or gave him feedback, etc.

My assumption is I’ll be asked to serve in an interim role for a bit.

I want the job. My first inclination when I meet with the board president is to be nice and say how much I’ll miss him—but I’m weighing going the other way and saying something about how I’m excited and curious because I felt like there needed to be a change.

I’m unsure how the board feels about him. In general, the folks who serve on this board aren’t generally super knowledgeable, nor do they generally care much, about the area we work in— which leads to a lot of disinterest on their part.

Any thoughts or advice on the next two weeks would be appreciated!

Any career advice?

Hi All,

I have an undergraduate degree in Psychology and a masters in Health Psychology. I've been working in the mental health field for nearly a year and it just isn't fufilling me in the way I wanted it to.

I've always had a passion for aesthetics - whether than be interiors, fashion, or just generally making things "look good" (not the most insightful but stay with me). Does anyone have any ideas/experience of career pivots I could take to try and help me enter and be successful in a career which involves those? I was thinking UX/UI design, but it seems like quite a saturated market and that I would have to get another degree for me to stand out and be successful in getting an entry level job & then progressing. Marketing also seems like an incredibly oversatured job market too. I have a little experience with data analytics using SPSS & R studio. Soft skills wise - I'm pretty good at building relationships between agencies, and am very organised. This is in addition to my psychological educational background.

I'm willing to do some short courses/online courses and also spend a bit of money on these, but just am not wanting to get myself into £1000+ of debt for another postgraduate degree.

Any ideas/inspiration would be grately appreciated! Thank you.

Advice What should I do in this case, should I go for it?

Upvotes

I had an interview in the HR Background verification job profile. Can't mention the name of the company.

I had my third round of interview today which was in person. The interview went fine but then I was told that I am gonna have my 4th and final round after they have considered all the other candidates.

I got a call from the person who will be my manager and she told me that as I lack experience and I am a total fresher they are a bit sceptical while considering me for it so she has proposed it in front of her seniors that what if I work there for 15 days, like an unpaid internship, if I prove myself then they can hire me as a permanent employee

I am totally confused. The opportunity is good but I don't know what to do. The salary isn't much but it will be a decent experience and a good mention in my resume in the upcoming years if I ever decide to switch organisation.

My uncle had told me that this is very rare even in his company. I have texted my friend about this too but I haven't received his reply yet as he might get free after 8 pm

So what are you thoughts?

I’m a young Moroccan with a well-recognized diploma in hospitality/cuisine and solid training. I also have experience in a 5-star international hotel chain, but I’m just starting out as a commis chef. Do you think it’s realistic for someone like me to get a work visa in Korea through sponsorship from an international hotel chain?

Can't decide between Mechatronics or Cybersecurity. Need advice guidance."?

I'm stuck choosing my next path.

In school, I did Arduino projects with Python and really liked it. I built a bunch of projects like an automated gate system, automated lighting, an automated dice game, etc.

At home, I've been learning cybersecurity on platforms like HackTheBox, TryHackMe, and PortSwigger Labs and i like that too

Feeling completely lost about what job to get, 31F, Master's degree, What job should I get?

Upvotes

Hi there. 😊 I am now 31 and thought by now I would know exactly what I want to do career-wise. I speak German, English, and Spanish fluently, a bit of French and Portuguese as well. However, I am just finishing my master's thesis (lived abroad for 3 and a half years and worked for 2 years). I hold a Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences (Political Science, Sociology, Social Psychology), wrote my Bachelor's thesis in Organizational Psychology and then went on to study my Master's in International Relations and Development Policy. Thesis is on state theory and human rights.

I am a quick learner with a good work attitude. I am reliable, hardworking and (would dare to say) smart.

Now I know, you will probably say I should've studied something proper like economics. If I could do it all over again, I would choose differently. 🥲I would have done Masters in Criminology or Psychology because that is what really fascinates me. But it's too late now. I just paid off my student debt so I am not willing to spend more time and money studying something else (at least not right now. I need a job!!).

Any ideas on where someone with my studies and language skills could be doing? It's so broad I have no idea whether to apply at an NGO (human rights NGO for example) or go into private business. I want to make good money but also feel like I am doing something positive with my work.

Help ?!😁

Advice 29F Completely feeling lost with my career; does anyone have suggestions?

I’m just feeling completely and totally lost. I went to college for video game design. After I graduated, I got an internship at a VFX studio startup doing VFX work, which worked out great until the pandemic hit and then the studio went under.

I got a job at a video game studio doing design work, which was fine. I ended up switching back to VFX because I liked the work more. That worked out for 2 years and then I was laid off due to the writer’s strike.

To pay the bills, I took a job as a leasing agent (because there’s literally no work anywhere in either industry) and I’m trying to figure out what the heck I’m doing with my life. VFX was super fun and I loved it but there is literally no work. Nothing. So realistically I have to pivot and do something else. If anyone has literally any kinds of suggestions, please share.

Things I enjoy or have skills in:

-Working with people -3D modeling -Spreadsheets -Content creation -Production/project management -Vintage clothes/fashion -Customer service -Light coding skills (Python, JavaScript)

I’ve been toying around with so many ideas; going back to school for something else, switching gears and becoming a lawyer, getting into marketing or project management … but honestly I’m just plain lost. Send help, y’all :’)

I little bit confused can somebody help me out ?

I am a little confused about what to do. The company currently has only 5 members, and I have been offered a stipend of ₹10,000 for 6 months. I got an opportunity in a startup where the job role is dynamic, and I have to manage both office work and technical tasks such as data science and AI/ML

Can I work in a bank ?

Upvotes

Hi guys, I'm 30 years old, with a degree in banking and finance, several courses and various work experiences as an analyst but always in training or internships. I started my career a little late at around 27, now I'm 30, do I still have hopes of working in a bank in Italy? Or am I too old? I have no problem starting with internships but I want to understand if my age matters. I have always studied the sector, I have created many stock pitches and opened my own personal website, but I never get the right answer when I try for banks. Be honest and direct… I need to understand if there is still hope for me…

I’ve been recruiting for 20+ years…the best of us don’t even look at applications, we are hunting passive talent on LinkedIn and selling them on job opportunities.
