We got this little guy 2 years ago, he was 4 when we got him. At that time he had VERY short hair and he was very skinny… but since owning him he has tripled in size and now has pretty long and fluffy hair. Is his hair supposed to look like this?
She was the only kitten in the litter with a bit of a fluffy fur, her siblings were all short haired so I kinda knew she was gonna have long hair, but each year that passes by she has more and more of it. And I love it ❤️
ohhh my gosh she looks just like my squeezy-bees did when she was a kitten! she passed a year ago at 12 years old and I don’t have many kitten pics remaining of her so this is giving me life. 💜
Holy Crow. She looks like a whole different cat! I would have legitimately thought it was a comparison between shorthair and longhair varieties if you didn't say it was the same girl.
That’s her in the hot summer days. She used to grow all her fur by the winter and lose it in the summer, so she had short hair in warmer temps but now she is just all floofed up during any season 😅
I’ll also add that I do groom him, I LOVE brushing him out. But he isn’t really a fan of it and he’s been that way since I first got him.. so I try my best to groom him without getting clawed. 🥲
He looks extremely well groomed. Like extremely well groomed.
My cat LOVES brushing and his fur looks exactly the same. You can also try using your fingers to comb through, that way you pull out quite a bit of hair but it's basically just petting. Definitely also try different type of brushes. My cat likes human hair brushes best. So now we also share that lol
I’ll look into this! When I do brush him I can tell he loves it, but he always try to grab my hand and it scares me. I know he looks cute and cuddly but he’s the complete opposite! He literally wacks me on the head when I walk by if he’s impatient and hungry. I’m scared of him but also in LOVE with him. I swear he’s the only thing in my life that I full on surrender too. 🥲
Do you know what breed he is? I did a double-take because he looks really similar to my friend's cat, and she has no clue what breed her cat is. He hss similar fur and it gets matted quite easily now he's older, so she brushes him daily.
Can confirm! We have a fluffy cat (half Maine coon, half mystery) and she HATES regular brushes to the point where if I use one, I walk away bloody. But she… tolerates… glove brushes enough that we can kind of de-shed her once a week without losing a limb
Some cats don’t stop growing until age 5. We took in a three year old short hair cat who was 8 pounds and small frame. He’s now 6, and he’s long haired and 18 pounds and his frame is MASSIVE. His paws grew, his muzzle grew, his build grew. We have to brush him daily now. Once he got steady nutrition he just filled out. It happens. Your cat looks healthy and happy!
Ours went into heat really young and was tiny at 4 months so we expected her to stay small. She's 1 yo and 5 kg of pure muscle.
Size 42 shoes for reference (us size 10)
Not as big as our previous off brand Siberian lookalike. She got to 8 kg, vet said that she was slightly underweight (she was a very fussy eater) and her ideal weight was 9.5 kg.
See if you can train him to stop swatting at you during brushing, maybe? You'll need a clicker and a lot of treats he adores.
You start by "charging" the clicker, which means sitting down with your pet and feeding them a bunch of treats, clicking before each one. That teaches them to associate the click with the reward. Then you use the clicker when you see the behavior you want. After you click, make sure you still treat. I would start brushing. If he lets you get in a few strokes, click and treat. Then go back to brushing. Click and treat for every few strokes without kitty retribution. Eventually you can reduce the number of treats a bit (you want to make sure you aren't overfeeding long-term), so maybe you click, keep brushing, click, keep brushing, click and treat. If he swats, don't stop brushing right away if you can safely continue, because that teaches him that smacking you is the way to get what he wants. Ideally, his strategy for ending a grooming session should be getting up and walking away, not doing you harm.
For all this to work, you need to be able to read his cues decently so you stop before he's overstimulated or cranky, and you need to be sure your brushing technique is gentle.
A grooming glove won’t go deep enough for potential knots to come loose, it also stimulates the healthy hairs to shed. Get a metal comb like the ones for doggrooming, hold the brush at an angle and go through the fur. If you feel a knot you move the comb downwards untill it releases. Sincerely a cat groomer
Anyone got a source on this? I googled it and it just shows a bunch of insta/tiktok/Reddit comments parroting each other. Especially interested because it looks like this cat gets brushed but without the brush going all the way down to his skin.
That's just how fur looks. It's kinda clings to each other. My cat looks exactly the same but his fur gets brushed very well and he has absolutely no knots, and I brush all the way. In fact ops cats fur looks basically knotless.
I’ve also seen this all over the internet with no actual evidence. But my cat has really short hair with no mats and hers does this too. I wouldn’t assume it’s improper brushing unless you can’t part the fur to see skin
I don’t know maybe my math is off but i was told he was born in the summer of 2019 and I got him on 2023. The woman who I got him from for free on Facebook also eventually provided kitten photos of him. I always thought he was just a domestic short hair.. it wasn’t until I posted his photo and a bunch of people thought he was ragdoll, I didn’t even know what a ragdoll was! Which led me to messaging his previous owner and she told me that his mom was 100% ragdoll. But I just take that with a grain of salt because I still haven’t done any testing myself… he’s also over 15lbs and has just gotten so huge and fluffy.
What did the shelter or previous owner say of his origin, and was his age confirmed by a vet giving an oral exam? If he was found and surrendered I wouldn't trust that age estimate. I've worked with cats for around twenty years and that doesn't look like a four year old in the first picture to me, it very well could be but that face and development makes me think he's 1-2 years old in the "before" photos and 4-5 in the current ones. They technically hit middle age around four and are considered seniors by seven, and they can look like they're an adult at as young as eight months old. Dental plaque doesn't lie, though. He's a gorgeous boy either way!
No! When we first got him he was just really skinny and seemed pretty small. He’s coat was also dry. I just immediately started giving him all the good stuff for his diet and he quickly changed.
Then and now :) Long haired cats often have a hard time cleaning their buttocks, so you might want to help them clean time to time. It also helps if you cut the hair around that area (not an easy task :o)
Dang my lil man looks so much alike! He also doesn’t clean his butt…doesn’t seem like there’s hair in the way he just leaves poop flakes. Feel like I’m always wiping
I refer to such haircuts as giving my cat "shorts". As in, "Darling Floof, it's time for your summer shorts!" Or "hey cat, your shorts look cute today."
Hey 😍 my babygirl was already an adult when I adopted her, weighed 4 kg. In her 5th year, somehow she became a giant, with the same fur and pink belly. Now She's 6,5 kg.
I found that before neutering ragdolls have shorter fur then when they are done they explode into a fluff ball. He could do with a brush but it’s also a sign of good fur density
I had a vet tell me he’s short haired 😂 he’s more hair than anything else. Shower him down and he’s a skinny boy but IRL you could wear his tail like a scarf or choke someone with it 😂😂
You can kind of see it here but my long hair boy is like that too. I think it’s the longness. My short hair cats don’t have that. I like to stick my fingers where it separates lol
Brush gently and let cat jump away when he wants to- sometimes it feels so good they do that. You can always do a little more later. Start with chin, back, sides, tummy is last ( because sensitive!).
It means you've given him a great environment and he's become much more healthy and happy. Malnourished cats won't grow out their full coat, whether they are long or short haired.
If you are refering to how it looks kinda seperated, i’ve heard that it actually means they are healthy!
If you are refering to how it got long, it’s definitely because you made him healthy. My mom had a Siamese cat and was super light grey face and was super skittish. Once she got healthy, her fur started to change colors like a normal Siamese one.
awhhh I love when my also originally short haired kitty skrunkles up with the garlic cloves too. his name is rico suave but when he’s skrunkled up, he’s mr skrunkles
You know how human hair, when wavy or curly, naturally falls into locks? This is your cat’s fur doing the same thing, basically. You need to keep the fur brushed to prevent it progressing to mats, but the little chunks themselves aren’t that
My cat did this too. Got her at 3 and now she’s 6. She didn’t get that fluffy, but she did get a lot longer, silkier fur. I attributed it to a better diet than she was having before.
I'm sorry I know you're talking about the fur texture but my brain is stuck on the catception of your cat's brown fur looking like a cat laying on its side 🤣
It's a sign that they are being really well fed. Same with my cat, he was skinny and short haired when we got him. The texture of his hair too, it was rough. 3 years down, he's completely different in the way he looks and feels. He's super soft now with a lot of fur on him
I think diet has a lot to do with it! My rescue kitties tend to have a fur glow up when they start getting healthier food and more grooming. Your kitty always had the genetics to be a floof, but now he's got the better diet and fur care regimen to support it!
