Wooden Chess Set I just finished - Wood hand cut

Thumbnail

I finished another hand-cut chess set, my previous set was a venice inspired. This was hand cut on a scroll saw, this one is a neoclassical made from black limba and white limba. I am corking the bottoms now for the final touch. I'll have close to 40 hours in this set.

My one regret is using the polyurethane to finish. I should have stuck with Danish oil for the finish, I think this finish looks too thick.

Plastic/resin Handcrafted glow-in-the-dark chess set

Really excited to share this blitz set I’ve been working on! So many materials and techniques went into making it, resin was just one of them. There are LEDs in the board too so it lights up or glows-in-the-dark when charged by UV. What are your thoughts about it? I’m happy to share more on the creation process if you have any questions.

Certainly nothing fancy, but I REALLY like this set. 15" vinyl analysis board and weighted wood pieces with 3 1/2" Kings. Paired with a small bag, this will be my coffee shop/on the go set.

⚠ Incorrect Set-up Any way to restore the original color of the white pieces?

Thumbnail

Hey guys, I've got this old school tournament style chess set, I've had it since 1995. The white pieces over the years have taken on a creamy beige kind of color and I was wondering is there any way to restore these pieces to their original pure white color?

Is there any basic household items I could use like baking soda etc. ?

Thanks in advance.

Bought in an antique market in Delft. Supposed to be a Peruvian design, maybe Spanish vs Incas? Not sure but those look like Nazca lines on the side.

I went ahead and purchased for $60. I do like the night, but the bishop looks a little like a certain object that you would stick certain places. They feel weighted? I don't have anything to compare it to but they're definitely heavier than my other set.

Can somebody tell me if they're lacquered or not? I'm trying to learn about what makes a chess set "nice"//and the craftsmanship.

How would you guys rank the craftsmanship of this set?

🔍 HELP - Set ID Set Identification & Restoration Advice

Edit: Found a similar set from 1940’s??

We recently acquired this set off of marketplace and I want to confirm that it is a French Lardy set. The king is about 4 inches tall, the knight pictured looks like the other Lardy knights. What I can’t find is age - any ideas? I also want to replace the felt since it’s missing on quite a few pieces. But I’ve seen some debate about glues to use. Is there a preferred type?

Thanks for any insight!

Wooden Drueke 82040 Chess Set?

Thumbnail
gallery
48 Upvotes

I recently obtained this set that appears to be a Drueke 82040, sold in the 1980s-1990s. It is weighted and felted with King height of 3.5". Some describe this set as American Staunton, while others say it was made for Drueke in India. Early versions were made from Indian Rosewood (now endangered) and maple. I do believe this is Indian Rosewood due to the dark and contrasting grain. I don't think the lighter wood is boxwood because it has clear and denser grain. The bishops are distinctive with an angular head, but appear skinnier than other Drueke examples I've seen. Later 82040 sets may have changed to a different style bishop. Any confirmation or clarification of manufacturer and origin is appreciated.

👷‍♂️ Work in progress I'm working on a wooden hybrid e-board to play online and practice puzzles without physical pieces

Hi! My idea is to have a somewhat portable 9x9" wooden chessboard, with screens under a thin wood veneer similar to some wooden alarm clocks. This will give the best of both worlds: no distractions, the sensation of a wooden chessboard as a dedicated piece, and the ability to play online or solve puzzles without delays in moving the opponents' figures or preparing the positions to solve.

I have already done some 3D CAD modeling work and started writing the software part. Potentially, I'm planning to add checkers (and maybe other games?) as well. The board can also be used as a regular chess board without any problem using real pieces.

I tried to find a similar concept but literally couldn't find anything. I decided to share this here to see if it's interesting to someone else :) Cheers!

EDIT: Thank you so much, everyone, for your support! I just created a Discord channel https://discord.gg/zNNbv7z76A if anyone is interested in keeping up with the updates or wants to provide more feedback/ideas.

Plastic/resin I made a slightly classier version of my travel set

I know it looks like two different shades of red but it’s actually too thin layer thickness of the stripe on the board.

That said, I do think I should have gone with a darker shade of red in the first place.

I know it looks like I’ve used two different reds but it’s actually a case of not making the layer on the board thick enough to get a true colour.

I now think the whole thing might benefit from using a darker shade though.

I’m also giving real consideration to running a kickstarter…

Wooden Set identification Help

This set was found at my grandmothers house and we’re trying to figure out how old it is. I saw one knight that looked similar from the 1920’s, but my my mom thinks they’re from the 60’s. The box pictured has no other intact labels. Any ideas? I can add more pictures if needed

** IDENTIFIED. Thank you!**
