I am so pissed off that I wasn't interested in chess when I was in Istanbul. Now I'm looking at paying three times as much for a custom set that's half as nice has what you get there for a way lower price.

Depends on which set ofc. The sellers ask ridiculous prices, so it depends on your negotiating skills. One small set I was kind of interested in, they asked 6000TRY but were willing to let it go for 2000TRY. I tried 1500 but they were done with me so I left. Other seller was similar, but was willing to let same-ish set go for 2500 and after I left he chases after me and says 2000. So it really depends.

Agreed. There were some playable sets too, but I thought that these were interesting to post. I think that most buyers here shop mainly for souvenir set of sorts. Something flashy in oriental style. If you want a serious set, there are great shops out there on the internet to get anything you want.
