Bought in an antique market in Delft. Supposed to be a Peruvian design, maybe Spanish vs Incas? Not sure but those look like Nazca lines on the side.

These sets are all made of crushed stone and resin, and then painted.

These are known as The Lewis chessmen, the name referring to the island/bay where they were found in 1831. These 12th-century chess pieces were carved from walrus ivory, and some consider this to be one of the few complete, surviving medieval chess sets. The find actually included 78 chess pieces in total, so it can't be certain whether this represents a single complete original set as part of this.

De la foto 1 a la 7 es un conjunto que me trajeron desde el Líbano. Me parece fascinante desde las incrustaciones en la madera hasta las figuras en metal con estilo greco-romano clásico. De la 8 en adelante es un juego tallado manualmente en mármol y alabastro que me trajeron de Afganistán. Extremadamente frágil a los golpes, lo que me hace temblar cada vez que juego con él. Amo a los dos por igual, pero en el de Afganistán es más sencillo jugar.

My partner has gotten into chess again and has been on a hunt for a board. Well while out thrifting I came across this. I believe it is a stone of sorts. The pieces were wrapped in a newspaper from 1980 and were in a ice cream tub (😅) but all seem in decent condition!

His birthday is in October, do we think this is an appropriate set to gift or no? Also sorry if they’re not in the right spot :/

I am using the term "ancient" here somewhat broadly, ideally we want to post objects that are at minimum derrived from the earlier half of the 20th century (pre-1950), but ideally much older than that. I was told it was marble and quartz. What do you think? Each piece looks slightly different which tells me it was hand carved. Only $20 at a garage sale!

Can someone tell me how old you think this chess set is or any other information i am sure its onyx one of the kings is 14 cms

I recently picked up this chess set from my local thrift store for $11!

I’m super excited about this purchase as i’ve been looking for an inexpensive chessboard with individual character. After discovering this one, it got me thinking…is there any lore behind this board? it seems vintage and carved from stone. Factory made? maybe. Handmade made? possibly. Are there any chess (or antique) heads out there who can tell me where this board comes from, maybe even give me a period stamp.. It’s so cool and compact! (hand to show scale)

I got this set in India a few years ago, and they told me the board is made of the same marble as the Taj Mahal. I just love the intricate stone detailing.

Whenever I throw a party I bring out this mini set for the table in my kitchen. Without fail, there’s always an active game. I never thought that chess would be a party game, but people love it!
