Troubleshooting Cannot connect to any institutional networks

I am BEYOND ripping my hair out. Every single Chromebook I’ve ever owned, all three, has forced me to go through arcane rituals just to connect to the WiFi at the university I PAY for. But now, my brand new one is somehow making me do even more ridiculous BS, only to tell me it couldn’t connect every single time.

I’m trying to connect to Eduroam, but I’ve had similar issues on government networks. Every time, it tells me “Username/password incorrect EAP-auth failed”. I have followed every bit of advice I’ve found online, with the same results every time. Every thread like this is full of people saying “I have the same problem” and of course no one ever getting it fixed.

What do I do? Or do I just have to accept the fact that I spent $400 on a computer that I’m never going to be able to use in class, the reason I bought it for?

Thanks in advance.

Chromebooks are not compatible with Eduroam and similar government/education network authentication systems. The issue, typically, is that ChromeOS security safeguards will not accept that Eduroam system's authentication certificate. Linux users often encounter a similar problem.

You might check to see if your university publishes a workaround (see https://www.buffalo.edu/ubit/service-guides/connecting/wifi/eduroam-chromebook.html and https://berkeley.service-now.com/kb_view.do?sysparm_article=KB0014103 for examples).

It not, your best bet might be to contact the IT department at your university for assistance.

I wish I had a simple, "one size fits all" solution for you. But I don't.

My best and good luck.

If you have not.

Check with your IT team, there are normally campus specific instructions. Also, some campuses have a separate campus wifi , make sure you know which one you are trying to access, the information will be different.
I know it is frustrating, from helping some students at my campus, I will add, make sure you are using the correct login , that is a common challenge with all the information thrown at students. Some tasks require your email , some require your credentials to log on.

This happened to me twice with 2 different Chromebooks. A visit to the IT desk had the issue straightened out in a couple of minutes. You're also paying for that tech support, why not use it?

I have encountered this at my university in Japan. Everything is set up for Windows and Apple. Most Japanese use Windows computers if they use them at all. And iPhones and iPads. No one here even knows what a Chromebook is. And only a few people in the engineering faculty know what Linux is.
