Kirkman comics that aren't Invincible or TWD

We all know how these two series are his best and most known works but I don't here much about his other works and I want to know if they are any good

Transformers, from issue #25!

u/CromulentChuckle 1d ago

This but read 100% read 1-24 by DWJ

13

u/According_Stress5941 1d ago

Might as well just add on to this and say read everything DWJ does.

u/PositiveRecord7354 1d ago

I read everything by him execpt transformers
He is one of my favorite writers and artists

3

u/Barabaragaki 1d ago

It’s so freakin good, and it’ll work even for newcomers to transformers, none of it relies on nostalgia or knowing the series prior to reading. It’s just… stellar.

4

u/KingShango12123 1d ago

Wait DWJ is leaving after #25?

7

u/Barabaragaki 1d ago

Yea, it’s been very mentally taxing for him to keep up writing it, he’s a big fan too so there’s a lot of stress and pressure there. Leaving on a high is the way to do it, and I can’t imagine how he could create a bigger high than he has with the last issue, I went from tearing up to sobbing to uncontrollable hype.

u/DankRageOG 1d ago

Standard DWJ practices.

The man's a fuckin mastermind

2

u/KingShango12123 1d ago

Thank you. Just modified the pull list. You just saved me some money :)

2

u/According_Stress5941 1d ago

Yep! It’s time—-his story has been told. But who knows what the future brings.

1

u/KingShango12123 1d ago

Thank you. Just modified my pull list. No more Transformers for me.

I'm giving Kirkman one issue, but I'm not excited about it at all.

1

u/KingShango12123 3h ago

He never did anything of interest to me so i will skip. If i hear amazing things from people that are not huge marks for him i might try it.

Thief of Thieves is very good

Outcast was pretty decent but gets a little odd toward the end

Fire Power is awesome

Oblivion Song is good but the art is an acquired taste to me

3

u/ScreamingTurtle08 1d ago

Great description of Outcast. I really enjoyed it, but it gets pretty out-there in the last few issues lol

2

u/THE_Batman_121 Batman 1d ago

I do agree it was out there but I thought it was dope as fuck. Really enjoyed the comic bookiness

3

u/ScreamingTurtle08 1d ago

I thought it was great, too. I just meant that where the series starts versus where it ends up is quite a difference 😂😂😂

2

u/THE_Batman_121 Batman 1d ago

It's very different. it's almost like the exact opposite, lol. Im glad you enjoyed it

The Energon Universe! I think Kirkman is writing Void Rivals title, but he’s overseeing the whole universe. It’s really good

10

u/OllieGio 1d ago

He’s taking over Transformers along with Dan Mora starting with issue 25, as well.

3

u/DankRageOG 1d ago

Kirkman + Mora is just 👌👌👌👌👌

Moras gonna have his hands full with all these series hes helming

2

u/wrasslefights 1d ago

Mora said recently he's going to be pulling back his workload for 2026. I think he said he'll only be doing 1-2 titles. He's still DC exclusive so he has to prioritize them. I'd guess he's only doing the first arc of Kirkman's run before a changeover.

Still gonna rule though.

EDIT: He said next year he's putting all his energy into just one book. So I wouldn't expect him on Transformers for long. Good time, not a long time.

u/DankRageOG 1d ago

Its better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

Void Rivals has been excellent. I started picking up Transformers for DWJ having giant robots suplex people, expanded into GI Joe out of nostalgia and the good story hook they put in Transformers. Then I picked up Void Rivals for completeness, and I gotta say, as much as I've enjoyed the rest, Void Rivals has probably been my favorite of the EU so far. Good characters, deep lore, beautiful art, super good.

3

u/Lcfer Tyreese 1d ago

Is Void Rivals stand alone read? Or you have to read gijoe and transformers for it to make sense?

3

u/FloydianSlipper 1d ago

I'm caught up with everything that's out in trades. There is crossover but it's limited, and you don't necessarily need to read everything else to know what is going on. Void Rivals takes place like a galaxy away, so it's pretty compartmentalized.

u/bangondrumschool 1d ago

Oblivion song is brilliant!!

Outcast started strong but went on too long imo.

10

u/Affectionate_Case371 1d ago

I believe her did Destroyer for Marvel

3

u/The_Eye_of_Ra Dr. Doom 1d ago

He sure did! It’s under the MAX imprint. Big favorite of mine.

2

u/HyperPunch 1d ago

He did, it was a fun read.

7

u/Jjaz1 John Stewart 1d ago

Fire Power, Tech Jacket, Astounding Wolf-Man, Brit

Super Dinosaur if you like all ages books and dont mind a book that ends of a cliffhanger

Tales of The Realm is an underrated Kirkman gem from his early days (especially if you are a D&D fan)

Haunt is a personal favorite. Has one of the most stacked creative teams of all time (Kirkman, Ottley, Capullo and McFarlane)

1

u/PositiveRecord7354 1d ago

I always wanted to read Astounding Wolf-Man but I haven't read invincible yet

4

u/Jjaz1 John Stewart 1d ago

Theres an invincible crossover but it isn't a super big deal if you haven't read invincible. Just get the tpbs (or the upcoming compendium) and the one issue of invincible you need will be collected where it needs to be read.

Its a very good read. One of my favorite Kirkman books

2

u/PositiveRecord7354 1d ago

I will try it out thanks

u/DarwinofItalia 1d ago

Ultimate X-men

u/Guuple Cyclops 1d ago

Astonishing Ant Man

27

u/annoyed__renter 1d ago

It was actually called IRREDEEMABLE Ant-Man

2

u/The_Eye_of_Ra Dr. Doom 1d ago

Really need a 12-issue run of Black Ant and Taskmaster. I love me some Eric O’Grady.

1

u/DJC13 1d ago

We needed so much more of that series. So good.

2

u/Mister-Lavender 1d ago

Such an awesome series.

5

u/millmatters Orion 1d ago

I like Die! Die! Die! with art by Chris Burnham.

3

u/babylonianfrost666 1d ago

I really honestly enjoyed his Marvel Team-Up series in the early 2000s. The writing was fun and the art was really great (Scott Kollins was one of my personal favorite artists of the time). There was even an Invincible team-up with Spidey.

u/HortonDrawsAwho 1d ago

Marvel Zombies

3

u/guteshipokl 1d ago

I really liked Firepower, Art and story

3

u/BrownSandels 1d ago

Firepower is a fun read if you like martial arts. Art was done by Chris Samnee.

2

u/PositiveRecord7354 1d ago

Chris Samnee is one of my favorite artists

3

u/The_Eye_of_Ra Dr. Doom 1d ago

Oh boy. I’m pretty familiar with his Marvel work, so here goes:

-Marvel Team-Up (volume 3) [2004-2006]

-the Marvel Knights 2099 one-shots [2004]

-Jubilee [2006]

-Fantastic Four: Foes [2005]

-obviously Marvel Zombies

-The Irredeemable Ant-Man [2006-2007] (personal favorite)

-The Destroyer [2009] (also really like this one)

-What If…? “What If Thor was the Herald of Galactus?” [2006] (art by Michael Avon Oeming, one of the best issues of What If…? I’ve read)

There’s a few other things here and there, like a run on Captain America, an issue of X-Men Unlimited and of Spider-Man Unlimited, a couple issues of Ultimate X-Men, an unreleased Killraven mini (with Rob Liefeld!), and an X-Force Annual.

In college back in the early 2000’s I had a friend who was a HUGE kirkman fan before he was a big deal, and he had comics like Battle Pope and stuff. I really liked this series called ‘Brit’ I think it was like 3 one shots but I liked them a lot.

Googling to check while writing this he’s been on the invincible show (I’ve only seen s1) and he’s on the guardians of the globe so maybe it’s not the obscure thing I thought it was but I haven’t thought about it since like 2005

2

u/Nishnig_Jones 1d ago

Finally someone remembers Battlepope! I learned who Kirkman was through the old old old Savage Dragon fan forums.

2

u/blindchibi 1d ago

Didn’t he do a jubilee mini series from Marvel a while ago? am I misremembering?

3

u/eBICgamer2010 1d ago

He did Marvel Zombies.

1

u/benito_cereno 1d ago

Yep. One of the first things he did at Marvel

2

u/xzerozeroninex 1d ago

Tech Jacket,Capes,Superpatriot,Haunt

3

u/PositiveRecord7354 1d ago

A lot are recommending Haunt
I will check it out

1

u/xzerozeroninex 1d ago

Just a warning though after Kirkman left Haunt,Todd turned it into Spawn Jr lol.But the Kirkman issues were excellent.

2

u/Zerus_heroes 1d ago

Haunt was by Kirkman and McFarlane.

2

u/broadcasts316 1d ago

Mother Fucking BattlePope one of the greatest comics ever.

1

u/comicguy13 1d ago

I’m enjoying Fire Power so far.

If you want weird and hilarious, Battle Pope.

1

u/Boring-Conclusion-40 1d ago

He did Tech Jacket,I think he did the first Marvel Zombies book and he’s doing the Void Rivals book from the Energon Universe and he’s gonna be on Transformers starting with issue 25

1

u/SinisterCryptid 1d ago

Something you may wanna keep in mind is that after TWD became a TV show, Kirkman actually began to IP farm a bit and started writing several new series just to sell off their TV and movie rights as most studios wanted the next TWD. Invincible may have already been a comic series by then, but that’s how the series ended up happening since it was originally a live action series first before being in development for years and becoming the animated series we got.

Outcast and Thief of Thieves were the two main ones from that, though he didn’t write every issue of Thief. Both are enjoyable reads at the beginning though

1

u/GhostDelorean 1d ago

Firepower.

1

u/butt3ryt0ast 1d ago

Outcast was ok, really enjoyed oblivion song, and absolutely loved Battle Pope

1

u/Unctuous_Robot 1d ago

I loved Marvel Zombies. He just didn’t expect the higher ups to be so permissive, every time he’d send in stuff trying to find something they’d reject and it never happened.

1

u/lvl4dwarfrogue 1d ago

Fire power was a fun series done in the kung fu genre. It's fully out in trade now and is a fun romp.

1

u/Devil_Fruit9971 1d ago

Tech jacket, and wolfman are phenomenal

1

u/working4buddha Cerebus 1d ago

I really loved Firepower, a bit smaller than Invincible and TWD but it was pretty epic with amazing art. Oblivion Song was great too.

1

u/ohyuhbaby 1d ago

Oblivion Song

1

u/Botherguts 1d ago

Firepower but it’s Chris Samnee who got me to stay on that one.

1

u/Flat_Revolution5130 1d ago

Marvel Zombies 2005.

1

u/FizzPig Spider-Man Expert 1d ago

I really like his run on Ultimate X-men that closed out volume 1

1

u/THE_Batman_121 Batman 1d ago

Thief of Thieves and Outcast are two of my favorites he has done. Outcast especially was fucking awesome

1

u/_0mnishambles_ 1d ago

I really liked Oblivion Song.

Probably harder to find, but I think his Marvel Team Up run is mega underrated. It was a lot of fun (also featured an Invincible and Spider-Man team up!).

1

u/sysdmn 1d ago

Irredeemable Ant Man

1

u/DcSupes 1d ago

I really liked Oblivion song I finished it pretty quick I couldn’t put it down but I really love dystopian kinda stories and Oblivion song kinda fits that theme. So you should look into it

1

u/solidsnakebigboss 1d ago

Battle beast has been great so far

1

u/GodMammon 1d ago

Marvel Zombies

1

u/coolpeterm Donatello 23h ago

Fire Power is cool.

1

u/The-Ragman Animal Man 22h ago

Haunt.

Image announced yesterday that its getting an omnibus (I think) Which is good because I never got the final volume. I cant say much on it I havent read much, been waiting for it to be complete. Ill buy the omni

Its by Kirkman and Todd Mcfarlane and stars two brothers Daniel and Kurt Kilgore who share a body similar to Firestorm and become a symbiote like character known as Haunt.
Hes featured in a lot of the recent Spawn comics.

Sorry if any info is off I havent read much.

Void Rivals

1

u/hercarmstrong 6h ago

Void Rivals is pretty weak. Bog standard storytelling with nostalgia bait cameos and a thunderingly dull twist. Nice art, at least.
