General Interest/Γενικoύ Ενδιαφέροντος Curiosity about Ammoudara

It's my second time in Crete, first time went to hersonissos, loved the place.

Now, we wanted to change the spot a bit and came you Ammoudara, Heraklion.

Whats the deal with this place? at this moment the streets are almost empty, there is trash everywhere and seems like it's not been taken care of, except for the beaches which seem to look taken care of.

After the good experience in Hersonissos I was expecting the same here, but I'm kind do disappointed.

Well it's not that popular as Xereonissos

I’m sorry for the unexpected experience. Hersonissos and Ammoudara are different places, although similar in that they are by the sea.

You can enjoy the beach and different cafes and tavernas around. Locals eat at Petousis restaurant and there is also a movie theater in the area (texnopolis).

Compared to Hersonisos, it is easier to go to Heraklion center (“downtown”) with the bus (frequent and cheap - you can also track the bus online and it runs until 1am I think).

Why are you sorry?

Well, they are on vacation, revisited Crete and were disappointed. It’s not someone’s fault necessarily but still something unpleasant.

Ammoudara is great for decent to good beaches (although on windy days they’re tough), and proximity to the city and places like Agia Pelagia. Otherwise it’s a tourist stop. Gazi is the “authentic” village next to it that has a bit more build up.

Went only once when staying in HER. Much prefer Chania and the surrounding area both as a city and for the amazing beaches.

Or course it’s not as nice, it’s next to Gaza.
