If you think your worth more ask for it and!/or start looking for another position

Honestly this, only offer and demand will tell how much you are worth. Don’t care about how you “look” just look for other offers. If they trully lowballed you, f them. Big companies would pay a lot more for such experience if you are worth being hired to them.

they pay you 180k and you’re staying and working your ass off, why would they pay 100k extra?

if you’re truly worth more, prove it. get an offer and get out of there.

Ask for a raise. Look for another job. This is pretty simple stuff.

Well there’s no need to be doing “260k” worth of work whatever that means. Not sure if you’re talking about an increase in your workload within the same time span. Not like they can fire you if you’re truly the only one “holding the fort down”. You have all the leverage. Go find another job in the meantime

Find another company. I would recommend looking for a US tech company. Under 200k TC for 15 YoE and a PhD is an insane lowball.

What are the best places to find roles with US tech companies that pay great salaries for Canadians? LinkedIn? Indeed? Or…?

You can look through LinkedIn, compile a list of US tech firms you want to apply to, and then apply directly from each company's career page

I see! Do you know if there are US-based roles that are willing to pay Canadians that work remotely from Canada? Or is it a very low chance? Do US companies typically prioritise local (US-based) applicants?

Those are probably rare, but there are quite a few US-based firms with registered offices in Canada and are willing to hire Canadians. Such as Amazon, Google, Stripe, Robinhood, Affirm, Instacart, etc.

Those can definitely pay upwards of $350k - 400k, if not more, for your experience and degree.

Wow! Those numbers you mentioned, while not as high as US standards, are still very decent for Canada, I think 😮

I know of at least 2 (Canadian) gynaecologists in my circle, who each makes CAD 400k annually…..and that’s with super expensive and ultra hard / ultra stressful / ultra long medical schooling + a few years of experience + extremely long shifts. Seems that tech workers with those salaries are relatively “luckier” compared to those high-earning medical professionals…

I mean, I work at one of these tech firms and am on-track to make over 200k this year as a Junior SWE with 1 YoE. So yeah, they definitely pay well. Slightly lower than the pay for equivalent positions in the US, but still very good

Ask your manager next meeting or performance review cycle, or it’s time to move on

15 yoe + PhD and you need a bunch of randoms on a subreddit to tell you how to navigate your career?

The only time I was offered to match a salary is if I had a competing offer.

By that time I was already pissed and leaving.
