Humor Hit a little to close to home lol

Post image

Not my photo but definitely feel like i got called out lol. Been off and on zyns for a number of years now, used them to kick the habit of chew, then vapes, finally gave up vapes a few months back after the baby came. Ive been getting better about only using them when at work or out doing stuff and not having them at the house unless its a weekend thing. But definitely dont want my kid calling me out like this lol

My kids don’t talk a lot…so every time my daughter says “daddy’s phone” I feel an unbearable weight of guilt

Brought my 2 year old to the grocery store today and she was like "is this the beer store?". Then as we left "we need to go to the beer store, we don't have any beer!".... So we went.

Funny how this varies wildly by state.

I've kicked my habit down from a tallboy a day to a tallboy a week.

My kid still says all I drink is beer, and to grab a kinder egg while I buy my beer. Everyday she asks XD

I somehow missed zins. I smoked in the long ago and then switched to vaping and then “quit” when my wife was pregnant, but had a pocket full of nicotine lozenges all the time.

I got dog sick one week, probably in the first era of preschool. I couldn’t even stand having the lozenge, might have been norovirus. I remember after like 2 days i was feeling a bit better and I went to the drawer for my little tube of lozenges and just thought “what the fuck am i doing?”. It’s out of your system after 48 or 72 hours or whatever it is. The urge is there still, but I’ve been off nicotine since. I still eat a lot of breathsavers.

Man I eat the fuck out of sugar free wintergreen Lifesavers.

Oh man, I need to post mine. Same exact thing except "My dad's pockets are full of: gum". I've been stuck on nicorette for 15 or so years now. I hate it but, fuck, I probably need to get those patches. I feel you though, brother. It hit me hard, too. ❤️

Hey, from a fellow quitter, congrats on not being a smoker for 15 years. So what if your kid knows you like to chew gum.

You should probably try to wean off the nicotine though...

u/dingus_chonus 2d ago

This right here! My dad smoked into his 50’s, he’s doing poorly in his 70th year. Mom switched to the gum in her 30’s, and she’s still chasing my 3 year old around! She finally gave it up a few years ago when the doctors said it sure doesn’t help blood pressure at her age.

Nicorette is a nicotine gum, thats the problem. The gum isnt the issue.

37

u/FL-DadofTwo 2d ago

Hence why I mentioned weaning off the nicotine.

17

u/morganational 2d ago

Lol, not sure why he didn't understand that

8

u/morganational 2d ago

The gum is the issue, actually. Nicorette gum has nicotine in it. That's why it's addictive and that's why I'm using it.

7

u/Packwood88 2d ago

But its better than smoking…

9

u/morganational 2d ago

Yeah, you're right. But I still need to quit. I quit drinking 6 years ago and I didn't want to quit the gum at the time. It's probably time though.

Being able to power through fatherhood and all the associated challenges (assuming you're an involved father), but not being able to kick this habit? Come on dudes, you're better than that.

10

u/FL-DadofTwo 2d ago

Not sure what you mean, lol. I quit 15 years ago, around the same time this guy did. I'm not chewing nicotine gum or anything, never really did actually.

It's probably not a great habit, but it's miles better than smoking. Being a dad is hard and trying to ditch a nicotine addiction is tough too. Sometimes you can't do it all at once.

My point was more that his kid doesn't know he's chewing nicotine gum because he used to be addicted to cigarettes. And even if the kid does find out, it's a teachable moment if anything. "Hey don't smoke when you're older or you might have a hard time stopping like I did", that sort of thing.

My vice is sugar. It's everywhere. I throw no stones.

Props to anyone beating their vices.

u/1sunnycarmen 2d ago

cuz it's not actually a habit. It's drug addiction. Drug addiction coupled with some brainwashing (an addict who believes nicotine does anything for them besides simply stop the craving caused by the last cigarette, has been brainwashed.)

I smoked for 15 years, broke free just 6 weeks ago. Anyway, if you don't have the right perspective, it can be like torture trying to quit. Fatherhood isn't torture. It has meaning and purpose and is - for the most part - enjoyable.

These two things are not comparable.

I was hard stuck on Zyn and Nicorette for years. Had to stop using both in January. I just bit the bullet and did it.

3

u/morganational 2d ago

You doing good? How many random folks have you bludgeoned to death in that time?

3

u/baltimorecalling 2d ago

Doing great! The biggest issue is the extra mental sharpness that Nicotine gives me, but the physiological symptoms are in the rear view.

The hardest bout was the first 2 weeks. Got better after that.

3

u/Mistermeena 2d ago

I got hooked on the nicorette mouth spray thing when I quit and used it for 3 or 4 years. Beats smoking I guess. When I finally gave that up I had a strong urge to smoke again but I got through it

2

u/morganational 2d ago

Man, nicotine spray? I didn't know that was a thing. I did try the nicotine lozenge things for a while but I preferred the gum.

3

u/DntBanMeIHavAnxiety 2d ago

Holy expensive, batman! I quit smoking menthols and the gum stopped me from smelling like shit and being out of breath, but wow is that shit expensive. I think i quit everything out of spite because of the cost hahah.

2

u/morganational 2d ago

I don't blame you, but you're a stronger man than I.

2

u/DntBanMeIHavAnxiety 1d ago

Nah, you got this! Honestly, what helped me was switching to Ice Breakers Ice Cubes Peppermint Gum. It sounds dumb as hell, but it worked. Slow down your nicotine gum slowly and use it for when you're pissed off that day or use it for a reward that day. But, every time in between, chew the ever loving shit out of those Ice Breakers lol. You'll go through a lot, but at like $2 a pack instead of $55 a pack, you'll be alright haha.

For me, that gum is big enough, and "juicy" enough that it reminded me of nicorette somehow lol. Throw 2 in at a time like you would with nicorette, and you get the oral fixation. To this day, when I get pissed off, I'll grab that gum and chew the shit out of it instead of nicorette or smoking.

Idk, maybe I'm a one-off situation with a weird particular solution lol but I thought i would share just in case it works for you because I am definitely not stronger than you, and I don't even know you hahah

Good luck, brotha!

2

u/morganational 1d ago

Hell yes brother, that sounds perfect, seriously, I need that juiciness and have tried other gums, but I'll Def try that!! Thank you so much!! ✊🏽

My son in grade one said my favourite drink was beer. I rarely ever drink but I must have left an impression at some point in the first 6 years.

5

u/Brewingjeans 2d ago

I'm so worried for my kid to start school. I work at a brewery so beer is a very common subject matter in our house.

7

u/lucaslikesbikes 2d ago

We typically call that "the Zyns of the Father"

30

u/PocketSizePhone 2d ago

My kid told me to put my beer down the other night so I could dance in the kitchen. I drink beer often, but never a lot at once, certainly never enough to get drunk or anything. Maybe 1 or 2 at night, ~3 nights a week. But it was still sort of a wake up call for me. Might just be an after-bed thing for awhile.

27

u/sincerestfall 2d ago

Beer is my thing, too. At least yours didn't say, "Daddy, you need beer," in the grocery store, loud enough for a 3 aisle radius to hear, lol.

-7

u/dexter8484 2d ago

Funny because there are dads out there that will be like, watch this, "hey junior, refill!" While he leans back in his recliner and his 3 yr old retrieves another beer from the fridge. Like it's something to be proud of

I thought he wrote, “sin” with a messed up ‘s’.

Glad he didn’t though, would’ve invited a lot more questions.

7

u/NuclearHoagie 2d ago

I thought his pockets were full of White Zinfandel

3

u/Kaiser-Rotbart 2d ago

Ooof. Yeah this one is a big problem for me. I picked up vaping during COVID (because I’m an idiot). Also struggled with alcohol and weed during the same time period. Kicked the latter two completely and sober for a few years now, and moved to nicotine pouches from vaping. But I still always have a nicotine pouch in. I quit for a few weeks in January but relapsed and haven’t gotten back off since. Work and life are so demanding right now I find it borderline impossible to quit. But it’s on the medium term to-do list.

And my son definitely notices. Leagues better than my dad who chain smoked in the house, car etc growing up. But still not the example I want to set.

Both of my parents died from alcoholism so I appreciate what you’re doing for your family.

But don’t make sobriety or how you achieve it a pissing contest.

1

u/stirling1995 2d ago

I was a rogue man myself until I quit

1

u/omegared138 2d ago

I started sneaking smokes when my kids were away, then it became more than once in awhile (still never around the kids). I found Zyn and loved it, but the fake sweeteners absolutely wrecked my guts so I had to stop. I tried NicNacs but they aren't the same. Haven't been able to find anything state side that isn't packed full of artificial sweeteners.

1

u/East_Preparation93 2d ago

Better to have a pocket full of zyn than a lung full of tar. Keep at it, Dad.

1

u/riddley_walkin 1d ago

After 20 years, quitting was the hardest thing ive ever done but it was worth it. Except for the 10 pounds I gained lol.

Looking back i dont know how I managed it when I finally did (been over a year!) but I'll just say this. Don't let 5, 10, 500 false quits discourage you.

Stay quitting as long as it takes! Worst case scenario you'll always be doing less.

Mouth cancer, the gift that keeps on giving. Don't pay assholes to kill you.

15

u/Murky-Blackberry1949 2d ago

Nicotine itself isn’t believed to be cancer causing.

6

u/roostercrowe 2d ago

nicotine is believed to responsible for various negative cardiovascular effects though.
