Discussion Hey Community!! 😄 I LOVE seeing people post

Hey Community!! 😄 I LOVE seeing people post videos of themselves dancing and having a good time. So I just had the thought and I would like to do a Poll on the idea:

My thought is let's have a global forum dance talent show!

How it would work: - You would submit a video of you dancing within a specified time frame to qualify. - Our dance Community here would go through each day and upvote and comment on the videos they would like to continue on to the next round. - I would then go in (maybe appoint someone to help me moderate) and would tally up all the likes and upvotes. - there week be 3-5 rounds to keep everyone engaged and having fun. Sort of like our very own dance competition TV show.

If you like this idea: Upvote and put "YES!" in the comments

If you're not into it: DownVote & put "Not Interested" in the comments section

Seems like this could be a lot of fun and get the Community we have here more active with one another.

Happy Dancing! I'm looking forward to hearing y'alls thoughts! ✨️

Discussion Colleges/majors in PA

Hello! I (27F) am just looking to talk to people with some experience in this area. I'm looking into dance minors and majors, not even sure if it's a road I want to go down yet, but I figure some testimonials from you guys could help me decide if it's a worthwhile investment! Here's the breakdown:

  • I started a pole dance fitness studio three years ago after getting my Level 1 and 2 training certification. One weekend course, not legally required, but it did teach me some things that weren't covered in your average pole classes.
  • Since I've already created a job in the field for myself, I'm not worried about job market oversaturation, potentially low income gigs, or opportunities at other studios or colleges (unless they looked fun or offered connections!). Taking college courses would PURELY be for expanding my knowledge; to me, the degree is just something I get at the end.
  • MOST of the other pole studios in PA are not interested in collaborating with anyone, I've tried, to no avail. A few phone calls, a few emails, abrupt ends. They are very private in that way. Theyre not interested in helping you climb the ranks, and won't offer advice or connections no matter how far away you are from them, no matter how little you would affect them. The closest I've seen to pairing up was a dance studio that brought in a couple out of state professionals for exclusive classes with them, and the organization that handed out their teaching certificates.
  • I took ballet/jazz/modern, acrobatics, hip-hop, and gymnastics when I was young. That's almost 15 years ago now and while I kept my flexibility and proprioception, most of what I learned move-wise has vacated the brain premises. I WANT to relearn and know more. I want better choreography and performance skills, and want to be a more well-rounded teacher for my students. I want to be able to offer more types of dance for them as well.
  • I joined and ended ballet and hip-hop classes two years ago because the conditions at that dance studio were WAY worse than what was advertised. Horrendous excuse for air conditioning, the floors were borderline dangerous, and the teachers weren't willing to spend extra time on anyone who couldn't naturally keep up; so over half of the adult students were gone two weeks into the 10 week? courses. I completed them, begrudgingly, because I already spent a non-refundable $350 and then another $100 just on travel expenses, and because in this area there just aren't many options for adults. In less words, I've given up on the dance studios in my area, and no longer consider them an option for real learning.
  • I've come to understand that I don't do well when left to my own devices. Classroom settings and the sunken cost idea add that sense of urgency and obligation that I just can't apply to myself. I've tried for years, with tons of encouragement and rewards, and then tons of self-deprecation and punishments. It's not sustainable, and I have to accept that about myself.
  • I make about 35,000/year, I got mostly A's in highschool but have no idea my GPA, I think I remember scoring above average on SAT's at least in reading and science? Not sure how this affects my college eligibility, but probably helps rule out Ivy league schools or whatever.
  • I live with my fiance and our three cats in a rent to own home, so I'm not interested in dorms or other accomodations and the party scene won't influence my decision (unless it's so insane that I should worry about campus safety lmao).
  • Hoping for a manageable commute within a couple hours from where I live (closest major city is Scranton). Philly and Pittsburgh are DEFINITELY too far.

So my main questions here are: Is college necessary or would it at minimum be worthwhile? If yes, what colleges would you suggest? If not, is there anything else you can recommend considering the above points? Should I be thinking about business courses additionally/instead?

Thanks in advance to everyone who reads all this and comments!

Critique Request How should I solve my tightness from hips?

I've been practicing House dance for over a year now, but I'm hitting a wall with moves that require hip extension while kicking the leg forward. Or anything similar to that manner. It feels like something's "stuck" in my ligaments or muscles around the hip – especially the front side.

When I try to stretch (like splits or one-leg stretches), it doesn't help; it actually feels tighter afterward, almost painful.

To provide more context, I'm also a gymnist with quite large mass of muscle. I'm 78 kilograms of weight, 5.5 feet tall with 18% of bodyfat.

I'm wondering if this is hip flexor tightness or muscle imbalance from overtraining. I feel the tightness from my hip and hamstring whenever I need to to some kicking in my dance lesson. Has anyone experienced this? What stretches, strengthening exercises, or warm-ups worked for you? Should I see a physio?

Tips appreciated – I'm dedicated but frustrated!

Skilled Dancers who used to be stiff and are now extremely flexible, how did you do it?

Hi everybody! I'm a dancer, been dancing for 12 years now and I'm trying to become super flexible! I love love love ballet and I'm trying my best to become really flexible. What are your routines? How long did this take? I've never been really flexible, I can do kicks and I'm getting closer to my splits on my left side and I'm definitely getting limber from my stretching. But what have you guys done to become even more bendy? :) <3

Edit: I know how to stretch but Ive never really been that consistent with it, I can do basic turns and kicks and adagio etc. but I think that consistency is the key to becoming even better. As dance is my passion I'm doing my best to improve!

ADVICE PLSPLSPLSPLSPLS. Clip is from about three weeks ago but went to another class today and struggled with the same things 😭 panicking at full speed mode and leg work, and it completely messes me up every time. I notice filming I especially struggle not having a mirror. Not sure how to get over that either. I feel like that messed me up even more, as well as getting very embarrassed because the others in my class are FAR better with staying on the music with the speed.

Critique Request pirouette struggles

i know this should probably be posted in the ballet subreddit but they have a bunch of requirements to be able to post and i don't meet them, so hopefully this works here. im a somewhat beginner to ballet and am very new to jazz, and we just started going over jazz and ballet pirouettes in my technique class. im not sure if this makes much sense but whenever i messily go up into my ballet pirouettes and don't hit retiré where it should be, i do a lot better than when i do hit it right. whenever i do hit it, right as i get to where it should be, the heel of my supporting leg wants to fall out of relevé. i don't have this problem with my jazz pirouettes though, in fact im really good at them for having just learned them. so could it be a turnout issue? cuz my turnout could definitely use some work. or is it something else? any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
