Translating Crochet Instructions
Hello all! I’m an american who has some relations to Denmark 🇩🇰. I took up knitting while living with my host family and picked up this beautiful crochet scarf kit on my last visit. I wanted to start it soon, as it will be a Christmas gift for my Danish boyfriends mother!
Upon starting, I realized that I’m having a difficult time translating the instructions and my host mom isn’t familiar with the English translations. We might have figured out a couple words:
Stangmaske - double crochet Luftmaske - chain stitch Kædmaske - slip stitch Fastmaske - single crochet
Just wondering if anyone who is familiar with the English/danish knitting/crochet terminology could double check these words and the google translation of the instructions!!
Tusind Tak!☺️

i did a rough translation of the instructions as well
chain 44 on hook nr 5
first row begins 2 chains
from the hook (1 stitch)1. row:
1 single crochet* 1 single crochet in next stitch followed by 9 chain stitches, attach with a slip stitch in the same stitch as the last crocheted single stitch. 4 chain stitch, skip 4 chain stitches, single crochet in next chain stitch, followed by 9 chain stitches, attach with slip stitch in same stitch as last single crochet stitch. * repeat from * to * total 7 times. Turn work.2. Row: crochet 6 chain stitches * 1 single crochet in the center chain stitch in the closest chain stitch arch. 1 single crochet in the center chain stitch of next chain stitch arch. 4 chain stitches* repeat from * to * for the rest of the row and finish with 2 chain stitches and 1 treble crochet stitch in the first single crochet from previous row. Turn work.
3. Row: 1 chain stitch, 1 single crochet stitch in the treble stitch, 2 chain stitch, skip 2 chain stitches and make 1 single crochet in the next stitch* 9 chain stitches, attached with a slip stitch in the same stitch as the last crocheted singe stitch, 1 single crochet in the next stitch, followed by 9 chain stitches, attached with a slip stitch in the same stitch as the last stitched single crochet, 4 chain stitches, skip 4 chain stitches and make a single crochet in the 4th chain stitch of the first 6 chain stitches from previous row. Turn work.
4. Row: 4 chain stitches, 1 single crochet in center chain stitch in the next chain stitch arch * 4 chain stitches, 1 single crochet in center of next chain stitch arch, 1 single crochet in center chain stitch of following chain stitch arches, * repeat from * to * the rest of the row, finish with 4 chain stitches and 1 single crochet in the center chain stitch of last chain stitch arch and 1 double crochet in the first single crochet stitch from previous row. Turn work.
5. 1 chain stitch, 1 single crochet in the treble crochet * 1 single crochet, followed by 9 chain stitches attached with a slip stitch in same stitch as the last crocheted stitch, 4 chain stitch, skip 4 chain stitches and crochet 1 single crochet in tnext stitch, followed by 9 chain stitches, attached with a slip stitch in the same stitch as the last single crochet stitch* repeat from * to * rest of the row, finish with 1 single crochet into 4 chain stitch from the 4. Row. Turn work.
5. Row begins and ends with 1 single arch.Repeat from row 2 up and including row 5 until the scarf has the desired length.
there are probably some spelling errors and such, didn't have a lot of time to do it. but hopefully it's still useful :-)

oh! i just noticed what subreddit we are on lol!! i am not even subscribed to this subreddit, it must have just recommended your post. i thought this was the crochet subreddit and someone just happened to ask about danish crochet instructions
i guess it's po-tay-to, po-tah-to to ask the danish speakers if anyone knows about crocheting, or the crocheters if any of them know any danish
but i guess i should have written "hi, i know how to crochet!" instead of "hi, i speak danish!" 😅

Yes, kismet or something lol. But in any case - super wholesome post + gift idea !! And I will repeat: if my translation has any mistakes or you get stuck on some part, please do feel free to send me a DM or something. Happy to help! ❤️

Some places it is translated as “double treble”, it should always just be double crochet. In 5th row I think it should be “finish with 1 single crochet in the fourth chain stitch from fourth row”, though the pattern is a bit unclear. The rest looks correct. Hope you have fun with the project 😊

There are loads of list of translations of US/UK terms to danish on the web, some even containing the graphic symbols. Quite a few danes uses those lists too, so you could try googling them. You can also try joining some danish crochet groups on facebook.
