"weird readings that don't hold up" Backstory was I took ancient languages in college pre-conversion, which means I am constantly noticing things Some Guy made up in the 1800s.

You mean like stories made up and inserted into translations of the Bible in the 1800s? I have been wanting to learn more about this in particular for a while but don't know where to start.

I was thinking more today's image of the Rapture and things like that.

They are the modern day pharisees of Christianity.

Christians come in all flavors. We don't need to gatekeep just because a subset is assholes.
It's better to accept the idea of flawed Christians rather than pretend "Oh, they aren't REAL Christians."

u/Deadhead_Otaku 23h ago
At this point calling maga "flawed Christians" is a disservice to everyone. You can't really call them Christians when they're basing their entire life around doing the exact opposite of most if not all of Christ's teachings.

I mean they call themselves that and they use the trappings. I have A LOT of private opinions about the state of their faith, but they have made themselves to be representative to the rest of the population, and we have to take accountability for letting them (well maybe not me. I just showed up with blurry pizza). TLDR no true Scotsman is unhelpful, even when it is in some ways true.

Itās crazy out there, innit? All I can say is to keep your eyes on Jesus: no one else died for us. And the people Jesus put on blast on the regular were religious hypocrites, and grifters
Edit: a word

Word. If Jesus and Buddha were roomies they'd get along well. He spread the word through love, not hypocrisy. Don't listen to the hypocrites.

There is one gay friend of mine that I know WANTS to believe, and THAT movement isn't helping.

A few coworkers will say āJesus sounds cool & had some nice ideas but Iāll never be part of all thatā & itās very hard to argue when Iād come to the same conclusion if I hadnāt already been saved

I remember listening to DC Talk's 'What If I Stumble' as a kid, and the "Single greatest cause of Atheism..." quote has stuck with me ever since.

In that case, I recommend Quakers or Episcopalians ā not going to claim either is perfect, but from observation Episcopalians are rad and my Friend's Meeting has been really welcoming and full of good works.
Although if they can't feel comfortable, I can't say I blame them. I stopped wearing the cross I bought recently because I just...had deeply negative associations and I'm not very out about my faith (although that's also about not flaunting faith, I try to have my actions speak for themselves).

u/Bjorntheright-handed 21h ago
Yeah, I was raised Methodist, but I've been to the Episcopal Church's around my town, and they are pretty solid. Actually sang in one of their choirs for a year.
Imma be honest, I didn't even think about the Quakers even still being a thing.
I get what you mean about the cross, I tend to run in a lot of nerdy circles, and those tend to attract people with religious trauma. So I don't just cause I want to feel approachable to them.

u/Gentlethem-Jack-1912 21h ago
Why do people think we're not a thing? We're not big there are millions world-wide.
(maybe it's being mixed up with the Shakers - there are three so they are *technically* still a thing)
2
u/Bjorntheright-handed 20h ago
In my case, think it's cause we learn about Quakers in American history, and then we don't encounter them like we do with other denominations, so we just kind of assume they are relegated to history.

u/Gentlethem-Jack-1912 20h ago
Yeah, we don't talk about ourselves much...we do sue DHS though.

u/Bjorntheright-handed 7h ago
Wait, what? That's an oddly specific trait to have.

Well it was a one time thing ā it was to protect immigrants in our communities earlier this year and we weren't only group doing it. The argument was that the raids prevented us from practicing properly.
