Is this joke getting passed around? My cousin dropped a picture of this can in the group chat and said this joke word for word.

Yes, it's a well circulated meme. This guy is about as original as someone who drinks bud light.

Bud Light is piss that identifies as beer, so it does make sense.

25

u/pman1891 Apr 06 '23

Hey! That’s the #1 piss identifying as beer in all of America! It’s the market leader and it’s not even close!

445

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '23

Glad I’m not the only one who thinks BL is absolute trash of a “beer”

409

u/Havoksixteen Apr 06 '23

That has to be one of the safest opinions to have

241

u/CunnedStunt Apr 06 '23

Well here's a less safe opinion. A cold Bud Light is fine if your drinking outside on a hot day, it's just inoffensive beer flavoured water that dehydrates you way less than your favourite overpriced 9000 IBU hipster craft beer.

81

u/poopthugs Apr 06 '23

Slightly offensive as a craft beer enjoyer but can't deny it's truth...

That being said, as far as light beer goes, Hamms is far superior to Bud Light as an inoffensive dehydration water.

60

u/CunnedStunt Apr 06 '23

I'm a craft beer enjoyer too, but there's a time and a place for all beers, and that's what makes beer so great 🍻

27

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '23

Where were you in my early years when I was insistent upon drinking craft beer while bar hopping? Trying to keep up on craft while everyone else is chugging their favorite light beer is a recipe for disaster

beer flavoured water

This is often used as an insult, but I love water. Being waterbeer is what makes the American-style Light Lager style unique.

u/Ash-Asher-Ashley 🅱️ased and Cool Apr 06 '23

This actually isn’t as artificial as other companies - their market audience is pissed off, and it’s not even pride month

249

u/fzorn Apr 06 '23

Either that, or they're trying to bank on viral outrage from conservatives, which has been successful for other brands. This very meme is an example of the strategy working. This is an educational and very serious video about that strategy.

45

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '23

Nope, they have been with the LGBTQ community since the 70's. They're literally the beer of pride for longer than most people on this site have been alive. It's just now that people finally paid attention and now are pissed. Budweiser company has been giving money and support to the LGBTQ community for over 40 years.

12

u/fzorn Apr 06 '23

That's cool, didn't know that!

25

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '23

Yeah, so much misinformation because one video of some red neck being pissed off because he was ignorant in everything.

So people claim this is just a company trying to buy PR or something, like OP with the "fake caring" bullshit. Nope, this isn't a token gesture, this isn't wokeism nor is it something new.

This is something that has been going on for a long ass time so the only thing that changed is people are paying attention.

178

u/Sweatier_Scrotums Apr 06 '23

Imagine being a bunch of whiny little snowflakes who are so easily offended that pissing you off for publicity is a widely accepted marketing strategy.

119

u/Mystshade Apr 06 '23

It worked for hogwarts legacy.

60

u/fzorn Apr 06 '23

True, conservatives aren't the only people with marketable outrage.

In the case of hogwarts legacy, it seems unintentional, as was the case with Keurig. Will be interesting to see whether other brands will try to copy that. Doesn't seem to be a good strategy longterm to purposfully do a transphobic campaign, though, since it can taint the company image. Less so with inclusive slogans, since attitudes towards inclusiveness seem to be on a positive trend for the forseeable future. I don't see anyone in the future saying "Nike is a terrible company since they did that commercial about boys 20 years ago", but "We can't trust x-company, since they had a transphobic ad campaign 20 years ago" is plausible to me. Maybe I'm mistaken about that, we'll see.

69

u/TomStealsJokes Apr 06 '23

I don't know if the outrage over Hogwarts legacy actually helped game sales, the game was gonna sell like hotcakes anyways. Someone smarter than me will probably study it at some point

23

u/Nomestic01 Apr 06 '23

Yeah, I think it got a few more sales by people who wanted to own the libs by spending 60 more bucks for the same game, but that might not make a big impact on the huge number expected for sales.

33

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '23

[deleted]

→ More replies (2)

3

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '23

It's not just about sales, but online engagement.

Bud released one rainbow can and now there are 10000s of tweets and tiktoks about the brand.

That's billions of dollars in free marketing, all over one design.

8

u/dagreatnate1 Apr 06 '23

Eh, tbh I had no cod what hogwarts legacy was until I saw people losing their mind about it on twitter

7

u/Mystshade Apr 06 '23

I didn't even know it was coming out until the controversy.

→ More replies (4)

20

u/TheExtreel Apr 06 '23

The thing is, with hogwarts legacy and Harry Potter in general, the fanbase is very left leaning and most people agree that Rowling is a piece of shit, but they still want to enjoy harry potter stuff.

Hogwarts legacy itself isn't transphobic at all, there's a trans character who you meet pretty early on and by all metrics this game would've tanked in the right wing demographic if the controversy never happened

Hogwarts legacy was a perfect blend, you had the Fans of the brand who wouldn't stop buying the game but are against what Rowling peddles, theyre the majority of fans and always would buy the game no matter what, meaning it was always going to succeed thanks to this demographic. You had the boycotters who, most likely never were that into HP and wouldn't buy the game anyway, talking about it constantly and giving you free advertising. And finally you had the real transphobes, who would never buy an objectively "woke" game like Hogwarts legacy, buying just to "trigger the libs".

Ultimately the success of the game was never going to rely on a boycott, it was always going to be extremely successful, but the boycott did still get a few extra people to buy the game, and simply delayed some people who've bought it on release but simply waited for the whole controversy to die off.

In any other situation this would've been considered a "woke game" for "woke people" , except a tiny population of "woke people" got unreasonably outraged which attracted right wingers to a buy woke product. So to replicate this you wouldn't make a transphobic product or ad campaign, you would need a completely inclusive product, then somehow get one tiny population of the left mad at it (not enough to lose all sales from the left), which will make the right desperate to buy that product to try and make that tiny population angrier.

5

u/darkgiIls Apr 06 '23

That game was always going to selll like crazy lol

11

u/Bbdubbleu Apr 06 '23

Hogwarts legacy didn’t try to piss off a group for marketing purposes, it just kinda happened. Nice try to “both sides” something.

4

u/spla_ar42 Apr 06 '23

The difference is that with Hogwarts Legacy it only worked one way. Some people bought the game out of spite for the people who hate JK Rowling, but nobody who doesn't want to support the game is buying it just so they can shoot the disc and burn the case.

Bud Light's strategy is working both ways. People who would otherwise never buy Bud Light are buying it just to stick it to the people who are mad about their Pride campaign, while the people who are mad are buying it just to shoot the cans and burn the box. It's the same thing that happened when Nike made a deal with Colin Kaepernick and when Carhartt started enforcing a vaccine mandate for their employees.

That's why T_D is going after them on reddit. They long took over politicallcompassmemes and now they own this sub. They know how to appeal to reddit's dumbed down leftist populism to turn it against themselves. They want people made at Bud Light for being "fake" while they try to vote LGBT+ out of existence.

We need education of the people but social media is making people on both side's of the political spectrum stupider by the day. This is facism's greatest tool. So few on here learned a damn thing from 2016.

4

u/spookyswagg Apr 06 '23

Things I learnt from 2016

  1. Don’t look at social media before elections

  2. Avoid social media to begin with

  3. Don’t share or look at emotionally charged political posts

  4. Avoid identity politics, vote based off policy

  5. People are morons

8

u/Dinosauringg Apr 06 '23

I'm kinda a fan. The Bud Light one does seem like someone genuinely went "fuck it, I'm tired of catering to bigots" and rallied to release this.

Lol ok champ you really showed them.

20

u/Bbdubbleu Apr 06 '23

For those who don’t know, Busch and Budweiser are owned by the same company.

5

u/spla_ar42 Apr 06 '23

Reminds me of that one video I saw of a guy dumping his Bud Light while chanting "Go woke, go broke!" and then replacing it with Coors Light. You're just trading one "woke" brand for another

5

u/spla_ar42 Apr 06 '23

See, that's the other thing that's genius about this marketing strategy. They put out a limited-time design without actually changing the product and people (at least those who aren't extra pissy about this) suddenly want to buy it way more than usual, because it's "different" even though it really isn't.

That's how the local bar where I live sells WAY more Michelob Ultra than usual on St. Patrick's Day every year: they dye it green. It's just Ultra. It tastes like Ultra. But it's green Ultra, which makes people who don't usually drink Ultra want to buy Ultra, and people who do usually drink it want to drink more.

Bud Light have been supporting queer causes since the 1970s, long before it was fashionable. They supported Pride from the beginning, drawing all sorts of criticisms from mentally subnormal conservatives. And they're not exactly pandering to their core market with this campaign.

Reddit hates to hear it, but not everything need to be treated with naked cynicism and hatred. Sometimes companies are just a bunch of ordinary people with opinions who use their position to promote those opinions, it doesn't have to be some Machiavellian scheme targeting you personally.

7

u/eleetpancake Apr 06 '23

I think people also need to realize that marketing moves like this are the culmination of multiple motivations. Most people understand that a company's marketing strategy isn't guided by unadulterated altruism... but that doesn't mean all LGBT inclusive marketing is 100% socially nihilistic.

4

u/DeandreDeangelo Apr 06 '23

Bud capitalized on the fact Coors had very anti-gay policies back in the day (the family still supports anti-gay stuff). All gay bars switched to Bud and they’ve been linked ever since.

Bud Light has had pro LGBTQ+ messaging and marketing before that abbreviation even existed.

7

u/LukeBabbitt Apr 06 '23

I’m going to make this argument for the millionth time:

The world in which large corporations use their resources to reinforce and normalize affirmative social justice messages is much better than the world where they say nothing or actively fight against those same messages.

Yes, all corporations have profit motive. That’s not a new revelation. Take the W when that motive aligns with helping social causes.

And as a bonus argument: corporations are made up of real, breathing humans, most of whom at the management level are well educated. Anyone who has worked in a large company will tell you that social consciousness is something many of their coworkers share and it’s reflected in corporate initiatives.

Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

If you're upset about a beer can, you're the biggest pussy on Earth.

11

u/Its0nlyRocketScience Apr 06 '23

I'd be upset if someone insisted I drink the original contents of any can labeled "Bud Light." Horrible piss water

171

u/Sweatier_Scrotums Apr 06 '23

Being upset about something is literally the entire Republican identity. Yesterday it was green M&Ms, today it's a beer can, god only knows what it will be tomorrow.

51

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '23

Calling it here, they're gonna be mad at octopi for some reason tomorrow

Why is everyone being so mean, literally it's just a design.

49

u/Flobby_ Apr 06 '23

Because gay = bad. Im sure no one would care if bud randomly came out with an American flag design. But when gay people are involved it's pandering. It just goes to show that people still don't think it's normal/ been normalised as for most people they wouldn't have a reaction to this and just see it as normal

Love how this upsets people. Imagine being such a bitch that a can of Bud Light makes you mad lol

3

u/Cultural_Hippo Apr 06 '23

I think all major beer brands in the states should band together and do this. Then the people who are REALLY bigoted wont have any beer to drink and they just might slow down on the drinking. DV cases may even slightly decrease. The people who are bigoted but not bigoted enough for this to stop them from buying beer will be exposed to these ideas on a daily basis. It will normalize these ideas for them and they may slowly ne finding themselves not giving a fuck about the matter.

19

u/Kicooi Apr 06 '23

The amount of people pissed off by this one simple trick is hilarious genuinely

66

u/Unexpected-raccoon Apr 06 '23

Yeah ima be real, this is literally tokenism.

Like when every brand changes their twitter photo in pride month. Nothings says “I support you” like having a company like a company targeting ads for your demographic to boost sales numbers. Like being sold left handed hammers or pens for women.

15

u/indorock Virgins in Paris Apr 06 '23

Bud Light had done pro-gay advertising for about 30 years. So this is not that at all.

45

u/jxl180 Apr 06 '23

This take pisses me off every time pride month comes around. They see a rainbow on a social media logo and people on Reddit immediately dismiss it as an empty gesture WITH ZERO further research into the company, as if it’s impossible they are doing more than just changing a social media logo.

Anheiser-Busch has a perfect 100 score on the HRC Equality Index which is a very deliberate process to undertake and usually without much fanfare.

I’ve worked for companies without an HRC rating and I’ve worked for companies with perfect scores and the difference is astounding when it comes to supporting LGBT employees year-round, day-in and day-out, and these marketing campaigns are always driven by employees (typically of the ERG) who truly care a great deal.

28

u/Wygar Apr 06 '23

I find it amusing how people will remind you that corporations don't care about gay people or minorities and are only doing it to "appear woke".

Yet when the same companies do similar promos for events like Halloween or throw an American Flag on their cans I don't hear see near the same amount of volume of complaining.

10

u/suphater Apr 06 '23

Yep. Leftists on reddit complain about Democratic Party messaging all the time, but they have let Russia and T_D dominate the narratives with blind cynicism and purity tests and concern trolling and both side's fallacies for the past 7+ years. Social media is making everyone dumber by the day.

"It's a bad thing that a corporation is advertising to a minority group'" says populist progressives, and also says the rightwingers trying to vote LGBT+ out of existence.

People really need to start thinking before they talk, but social media trains people to post and react before they think.

Interesting, I had never heard of this index before. Looked up my employer and we’re also at 100! Nice

9

u/Unexpected-raccoon Apr 06 '23

I apologize. I’m personally bisexual and this should be more common knowledge. This wasn’t made with low-key homophobia but exhaustion. I’m genuinely tired of seeing shit aimed towards the LGBT community just to increase profit margins. I guess I’m so used to it that I didn’t care to even do research and that’s all on me. I genuinely thank you for this knowledge.

6

u/suphater Apr 06 '23

It wasn't made with homophobia or exhaustion, it was made with blind cynicism because social media trains everyone to be opinionated and reactive and post whatever gets upvote without taking the time to think. Social media inherently trains people to be conservative-minded and speak in Trumpisms without irony or awareness. We jave a major education problem and social media is making it worse than all belief.

I'm buying a case of bud light tonight just to spite you.

6

u/jxl180 Apr 06 '23

Yeah, I get frustrated too from it because I’ll see queer people at my company come together to work hard on designing a social media image or making nice posts, and people don’t see through the corporation that there are hardworking humans behind the designs who truly care.

It isn't, they have been doing this since the 1970's. This isn't something new they are doing.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills or people are finally paying attention but they always had pride beer cans and bottles every year for the last 30+ years. This isn't fucking new.

110

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '23 edited Apr 07 '23

Except in this case it's a bit more since 1: its not pride months and 2: its about a current political issue giving support 3: lots of their base are against it so it's not catering.

25

u/Unexpected-raccoon Apr 06 '23

Anytime you see a single group being used for the marketing of a product, it’s because there was a board meeting where they looked at the groups of people that weren’t buying their products.

So they have the bright idea that “hey, if we do this ad campaign, we’ll see this number go up in this demographic.”

That’s all it is. It’s an ad campaign to sell a product that normally isn’t consumed by the demographic it’s aimed at.

It’s like the all white skittles or (again) 99% of left handed products. These groups now feel like their being actually recognized and feel obligated to support. This is by all definitions— tokenism.

Why does Hollywood reroot a franchise aimed at a different demographic than the established fandom? Because they see ticket sales are low in this demographic.

There’s a difference between inclusion/acceptance and blatant tokenism

The worst part is people will defend this shit because they so desperately want to be included and accepted. It’s the bitter truth. You don’t think people want to see their demographic represented in media? That they cope with the half assed tokenism? They do. No one wins because tokenism is the norm. There’s no passion, no love, just a number going up in a fiscal quarter.

27

u/KeepDi9gin Apr 06 '23

Here's the thing, though. Is this campaign worth alienating the demo who does buy this swill? Yuppie liberals aren't going to suddenly buy bud light en masse because the cans have rainbows now. Seltzers, maybe, but not the main product.

4

u/anthro28 Apr 06 '23

Maybe see those numbers go up.

Between work, school, my circle, and my dealing with the general public I can't recall one gay dude saying "yup. Bud light is for me now." It could just as easily drop sales in your other departments, though these idiots don't often follow through with their boycotts.

Losing loyal customers in hopes that you'll gain new ones is a risky bet.

As a non US/english person I never understood the pronouces, isn't "they" an universal word for multiple people? I don't understand how can you say "they" at 1 person

14

u/sniply5 Apr 06 '23

It can be both singular and multiple depending on the situation, it's generally a neutral term though

58

u/TheJoninCactuar Apr 06 '23

Not necessarily. "When's that visitor supposed to be here?" "They're on their way."

They is both multiple and for when the gender isn't known. It's not that much of a change to use it for people who don't identify with a gender.

20

u/Flobby_ Apr 06 '23

Exactly. It's all about context and it's not that difficult to know when you are talking about a group or an individual

7

u/WarmishIce Apr 06 '23

If I remember correctly, “they” was originally a singular pronoun! It’s evolved to mean a group of people, but its still used as a singular as well.

5

u/Gnostromo INFECTED Apr 06 '23

No.

Example:

is Ktosiek being sincere in their question ?

No, they are being an a-hole.

5

u/PaigeLily Apr 06 '23

When you don’t know the gender of someone being mentioned, you can use it to reference one person- saves you putting he/she everywhere lol

19

u/jabuegresaw Apr 06 '23

English lacks grammatical gender, and "they" will often play the role of a singular neuter. You can say "a person lost their wallet" for example, since you cannot know the gender of this person. In languages where gender is a thing, at least the ones I'm familiar with, you'd often use the gender associated with the word "person" in this phrase, so "a person lost her wallet" if person is a feminine word.

English doesn't really have that, so all it's gender stuff goes on in the pronouns. She for feminine personal, he for masculine personal, they for neutral personal, it for impersonal.

"They" developing to adopt a singular usage from a plural origin is not even uncommon in English; it is the case with "you" for instance, which was used as plural (or as an honorific of a certain grandeur), while the standard second person singular pronoun was "thou".

3

u/_gnarlythotep_ Apr 06 '23

It's just a neutral pronoun or for multiple people. Anyone can be referred to using "they," regardless of gender. English is a strange bastard of a language.
