Does anyone actually spend money on awards? I was given a ton for free to hand out when I downloaded the official app a while back.

A couple of bot accounts drop the majority of awards.

Awarder karma, you can see a few accounts around a year old with 4mil+

I buy Reddit coins once a year in order to give people gold. I’ve been on Reddit since before the free awards and I started doing it then, because I figured it was cheaper than buying someone a drink at a bar and it makes peoples day. I also thought maybe giving money back through Reddit would keep this site running for free. Nvm.

Same, I got like 3 years free premium for downloading the official app, can’t remember if it was before or after it was rebranded from alien blue. Gave me a bunch of coins to spend over the years that I’ve used despite never spending money on Reddit.

I think a decent number of people have subscribed to reddit premium out of recognition that reddit isn't free to run but still wanting to block ads. Those people would have technically paid for awards, but that's not really what most were paying for. I'll be canceling my premium on the 12th to make that day as dramatic as possible for reddit's internal metrics, not that I've been subscribed long.

I’ve never spent a cent on reddit, but I have coins from the 4 years of premium I got when reddit bought Alien Blue.
