Yes.
The 2016 election to be exact. Reddit default subs have collectively lost their minds.

As a moderate, reddit as a whole has become insufferable. I'm not a Trump fan but I'm not a hater either. But apparently thats not enough for these people and you get attacked constantly if you try and point out obvious lies. In all honesty its so frustrating I find myself leaning more right because I cant stand the attitude
21
u/Xumayar Jan 26 '25
I hate it when subreddits that have nothing to do with politics get taken over by the PaaP (politics as a personality) hysterical hivemind.
19
u/Dead_HumanCollection Jan 26 '25
That stupid leaning picture from yesterday. People pointed out the picture was obviously tilted and the line was drawn to be intentionally extremely unfavorable and then someone posted the pic edited to be level and with a new line and the lean was extremely marginal.
And then people just start screaming at the person who pointed out the lie.
Like fuck Trump, but he does enough to make himself a buffoon without you guys having to lie/fabricate things. And it makes people with legit issues be taken less seriously.

u/Status_Peach6969 Jan 26 '25

This is why the pendulum swings. One side will be super popular, but they can't help themselves and keep pushing, pushing, pushing until people say "Alright, fuck this, I'm voting the other way" and then that side gets popular, and then they start pushing too far as well. There seems to be minor swings and major swings. I think we are about into a major swing, especially with reports of Gen Z being much more conservative than the last couple of gens.

u/Krynzo Jan 26 '25
As Gen Z member, the idea of a right and left baffles me, and I will avoid falling into that kind of thing with my full power.
When both sides can't stop calling eachother names, and have to keep yelling shit like nazi and woke (whatever either of those mean anymore) you'd think more people would pack their bags, form their own opinions and conclude that both sides are out to get you anyway
41
u/mrryanwells Jan 26 '25
“progressive” and “conservative” principles should be recognized as a gas pedal and a break pedal, we’re gonna need both to get anywhere and the terrain often determines which should be prioritized

u/Status_Peach6969 Jan 27 '25

5
u/Hrive_morco Jan 27 '25
Being in the middle is definitely the normal persons approach to politics, (At least here in Europe) Which is why Reddit's vocal minorities within their little echochamber subreddits spreading propaganda, Sowing division, and attacking anyone for "wrong think" against the hive mind is beyond extreme and hilarious as an outsider, And you guys only really have two parties haha 😂
6
u/Status_Peach6969 Jan 27 '25
I'm even being attacked for my comment because I said I'm in the middle. Someone had the nerve to say that it automatically means I'm on the right. Like what? Its so frustrating, why would I support them if this is how they act
2
u/Hrive_morco Jan 27 '25
I mean to us in the old world that is just fucking hilarious 😂 I am sorry your fellow countrymen online are of the two extreme variations, Whilst at the same time don't understand that people vote in politics for the issues that will personally affect them and their families.
I mean I am personally on the left, Well not "America left" as that is still very "right leaning" to us in my own country, But I have family members that vote right, And imagine if I would behave like the guys attacking you to my own family members haha 😂
They sound like football (soccer to you I guess) hooligans to me, They have stopped seeing you as a person and instead see you as a target that it is perfectly fine to attack, As if that was normal. It just proves that muting subreddits like pics is the correct one I guess.

u/KaptainKlein Trans-formers 😎 Jan 26 '25
I don't get this attitude. I understand being annoyed that your shitposting website is nothing but political babbling, but why does that shift how you interact with actual elections? Whether they're annoying or not doesn't change the views or actions of the actual politicians.
23
u/edylelalo Jan 26 '25
It does change, not only social media wise, but if you know that social media and mainstream media are straight up lying about something you lose trust in what they say and their beliefs.
It's the same thing for me when some people started calling Kamala a communist, she's not, and if I followed someone that said that, they lost me right then and there.
7
u/Status_Peach6969 Jan 26 '25
Right, so your telling me you've never met an insufferable Trump voter who made you want to vote for Kamala so badly just to kick their teeth in? Well I've encountered that, but its the Kamala supporters usually being arrogant. So its very hard to be on the same side as these people. Online absolutely oozes into my view of the election

13
u/Status_Peach6969 Jan 26 '25
See this is the thing, if I say I'm moderate and you immediately label me as republican, guess whats going to happen. Because noone is welcoming me to the democrats let me tell you. They've been insufferable lately. You guys with your smugness and elitism really pissed off the voting base, and its no surprise with people like you spouting comments like this. 7 swing states lost? Only way Trump did that well is if theres a real dislike of the democrats within moderates and independants, you ever think that?
→ More replies (7)4
u/Cowmanthethird Jan 26 '25
No, some people actually just don't buy into the culture war bullshit.
I've voted Dem the last 3 elections, but I still don't believe everything they say about themselves or their opponents. Some people think that because they agree with someone on a few topics, that means they can't be a shitty person somehow, or even just disagree about other topics.
Hell, I firmly believe the reason Trump won is because his supporters can't understand that he doesn't want the same things that they do at all. They assume he does because they're on the 'same side'. Plenty of Harris supporters are in the same boat too, look at the politicians who outed themselves right after the election by throwing the LGBT community under the bus and blaming them for the loss as soon as they weren't good for votes anymore. Those people were not representing the ideals they pretended to for votes.
Right now, the Democrats are significantly less shitty, but I don't agree with ALL of their positions or methods.
In the end, I label myself moderate because I don't want to support the "one side or the other" mentality, and because I'm legally registered independent. I vote Dem right now, but I won't let myself get stuck in the mentality of never changing if the parties change platforms and focus like they have soooo many times before. That's how we've ended up with so many people voting Republican against their own interests, because that's what their daddy did and no more thought went into it that that.
1
u/Another-Mans-Rubarb Jan 26 '25
What culture war? Trump pardoned 1500 people who invaded the capital building, are you even paying attention?
4
u/Cowmanthethird Jan 27 '25
Did you skip the whole part where I said that I support the Democrats right now? I hate Trump, but that doesn't mean I'm going to denounce every right wing person from now until the end of time, that was the whole point of my post.

u/Edmundo_KO Jan 26 '25
When one side is defending nazi salutes it's kind of hard to argue you are a moderate
39
Jan 26 '25
It's really easy to say you're a moderate when you find the dichotomized rhetoric bullshit. A person can actually have views that don't fit exactly into one of the two boxes the media tells you there are.
→ More replies (1)4
u/o_o_o_f Jan 26 '25
The vast majority of people who identify as conservative or liberal have plenty of views that don’t fit exactly into one of the two boxes. Being a moderate isn’t unique in that regard, that’s just understanding your views and how they fit into broader understandings of either party.

election really ruined reddit, first time I experience this sudden change
49
u/acathode Jan 26 '25
2016 was even worse, and a real milestone for the site.
Reddit was a whole lot more diverse both in just content in general and what opinions were "allowed", but during and just after the 2016 election the whole site became the target for people with agendas and there was a very obvious conscious effort to hijack the site - which mostly worked.
Obviously, there was a noticeably change to Reddit during this election as well - but it mostly came in the form of a volume increase and not so much the whole site drastically changing in nature.
It was very clear that a lot of people - including political activists, the supermods that control most of the big subs, and Reddit staff themselves - had decided that a repeat of TheDonald was never to be allowed to happen again.
2
u/THE_FREEDOM_COBRA Jan 26 '25
I don't remember during 2016 election to have been too bad, I think because the left was sure they were gonna win, it was after that they really wanted to do everything they could to make sure it didn't happen again.
7
u/acathode Jan 26 '25
Kinda. The left was quite complaisant, but TheDonald were memeing about their God Emperor and Golden God and so on all over the site.
The left side were not completely inactive, this was when the politics subs really went all out Hillary and we had stuff like ShareBlue and so on. However, overall the Trump camp were running circles around the Hillary camp and completely spamming all of Reddit.
The hype for the Democrats had on Reddit been mostly for Bernie, and when Hillary became the candidate the hype fizzled (and no amount of whining about "Bernie-bros" could change that).
However the real shit hit the fan just after the election and it became clear that Trump had won and that it looked like Trumps superior online presence had played a role in the election result. Just 1-2 days after the election result, when the initial shock had died down, Reddit was absolutely flooded. New subs were being made en masse and then had posts mass upvoted in a clearly coordinated campaign, and from then on it never really went away.
While Reddit has always leaning left/liberal, from that point the site was very much "taken over". It became more and more clear that from one side there were actual political effort coordinated outside of the site to control the narratives, and from the other side the people inside the site with actual power - ie. the Reddit admins and the powermods - decided to remove almost all pretense of being politically neutral and to not allow anything even resembling TheDonald to ever exist on the site again.
