Beating up Nazis has actually shown to be a very effective way of dealing with them. This isn’t just hyperbole when the British union of fascists tried to do a march in London, the British public came out in mass and violently dealt with them. That display was so prominent that the British Union of fascist never recovered. A similar thing happened in America after a nazi rally in Madison Square Garden. Publicly and violently dealing with Nazi is actually a very effective tactic deal with them.
To be fair, the battle of Cable Street happened in 1936. Three years later Britain was at war with Germany, that's the real reason why the BUF fucked off.
There is a big difference between using violence against an organized group of people intending to use violence, versus beating up a single guy who wasn't looking to fight at all.
Once a stubborn group disconnected from society becomes organized, armed and groups up, then there is no other way to sway them.
But attacking individual bigots like this, is exactly what causes them to group up. Bigotry like this in its underdeveloped stages can be dealt with peacefully. but, antagonizing them, attacking them, alienating and bullying them will only push them further down the facism rabbit hole
Lmao the Nazi sympathizer wants people to "sway" them. Nah dude. We don't care about you, we don't want you in society. We have no intention of "swaying" you. That's on your parents, blame them for their failure. Go all the way down your shitty little rabbit hole and stay there in fear of retaliation for your "beliefs".
And if it causes y'all to group up, good. Much easier to deal with Nazis when they're sticking with each other, and not spread out, talking about how "it's just a belief/words" and "be tolerant of it", like you're doing.
Yeah this is the answer. There HAS to come a point where we as a society just say nope! We’re done! And then we begin the age old tradition of punching nazis in the face once more. Ironically, that would ACTUALLY make America great again. 💅
The question is now; where is that point? How far is the right amount of far to let it go before doing something? Is it past that point. I said "question," but I suppose that was more than one. Idk. I dont have any answers. Im tired man.
There are no clear cut rules. There is no distinctive border between tolerable and not.
But also there are things you can clearly put in the category of "requires doing something". Publicly endorsing a genocidal regime is definitely detrimental to society. Violence is never good, but in this case, it's the lesser evil. Genocidal maniacs cannot be tolerated, that's it.
I mean wou would rather be in a room with a communist-nazi-flatearther than with someone who is simply gonna punch you in the face. You can't ignore physical violence 😅
If he's punching Nazi id rather be in his room, you can chill with the person who hates your existence if you don't fit into his idea of a perfect person.
Nazi rhetoric is neither, a polite society can only be achieved when everybody in it is polite, Nazis aren't not, they are therefore not part of polite society (the moment they become agitating). Therefore the rules for a polite discourse can't apply, because it's not a polite discourse (they guy was shouting inpolite stuff)
Because they will not learn. You can't turn them back. The only thing they will understand is being overpowered so that they stay home.
They are already in echo chambers. Deciding not to fight them will simply let them believe they can get away with stuff in the real world. THAT will cause them to push boundaries and bring a gun next time.
It's true that they are already largely in echo chambers, but I believe that this would only make things worse.
The bigot in the video showed no interest in a physical fight (probably because he is a wimp and knows he'd get his ass beat), choosing to fight him anyway is exactly what pushes boundaries and might get him to arm himself next time he displays his bigotry in public (as it shows that violence is accepted and they just need to bring more of it to overpower you instead).
I think there are better ways of showing that they can't get away with bigotry, that aren't escalation to violence.
For what it's worth, I appreciate your logic and I don't think you should be getting downvoted. I too wish that there was a nonviolent way.
But history shows fascists don't appreciate nonviolence. Remember that those are people that want the deaths of The Others; violence is already what they understand. Trying to peacefully suppress them has never worked historically. It's how Hitler was allowed to rise to power, it's what allowed Mussolini to gather strength to take over Rome.
The only way to stomp them out is literally that. To show them that they will lose their own game. The die hards will always be around, yes, but showing that it's a literal losing fight will keep them from gathering followers of "maybe he's got the right idea" types, as those will think it's not worth it.
I agree that it's not perfect. But unfortunately the fascists started this fight, and those who fight back are defending themselves, pre emptively.
This helps just the tiniest amount when the state itself doesn't want to do anything, if you wanted to go against Nazi Germany you couldn't trust the Vichy government, you had to become la resistance. Even if just one Nazi now is scared and tones down his rederic in public to not be as offensive society got better.
I don't say it's good we might have no other choice, but sometimes to make an omelette you do have to crack some Nazi eggs
Or it will show them that violence is an accepted means to opress others and all they need to do is come back even more violent? Plus if you are the first to escalate to violence, like in the video, then they can justify their own actions and play the victim.
While I see your point, it's about showing resistance to hate. Tolerating Nazis is the same acceptance that they have an equal voice. Fuck them.
If more Americans showed the same guts as that guy in the gif then maybe there'd be less of them marching in the streets
You're in the fantasy world where you respectfully reply to those people, explain why they're wrong and they see how nice and respectful you are and say "hey, maybe those people aren't so bad, I don't think I'll be a nazi anymore".
In reality those people support an ideology that violently suppressed any opposition, it doesn't matter if he was looking to fight or not, his ideology does, and they should be treated the same way as they would treat others if they get some power.
