You think that’s bad? Try Russian. My uncle Johnny (Johansen, yes I know it’s a unique name for a Russian person) reconnected with his Russian family and hadn’t spoken Russian regularly in decades. He lost most of his accent from living in the US and you’d swear he wasn’t even related to them.

Latinos who grow up in LATAM do not care because in Latin countries even among neighboring cities people will have accent differences. They can say you have "acento de gringo" but it is in no way, shape or form meant to be derogatory UNLESS they specifically state so.

u/Iatheus Jul 21 '25
Seattle as well and yeah I get constant compliments on my Spanish from the people here who speak it natively.

In 2025 you counter that by shouting 'speak fucking English, this is 'Murica!' at them while already dialing ICE
3
u/halfsideclark Jul 22 '25
I only speak English, but I would only make fun of native English speakers. No matter how bad your English may be, I have nothing but the highest level of respect for people who make the effort to learn a second language.

My favorite country where people are like the one on the left is Indonesia. I have terrible, elementary-school level Indonesian (saya berbicara seperti anak bodoh!). I go in a restaurant and say hello and people start talking to me in this mind-blowing mix of Bahasa Indonesia, Betawi, and Sunda. i just sit there and say, "ya, enak sekali!"

u/YourMomsTiddiez Jul 20 '25 edited Jul 21 '25
All I remember from Indonesian classes is kapa kepala. Or was it berapa kepala. It's been a while.

u/Thatdudeovertheir Jul 21 '25
This was absolutely my experience in Sulawesi and anywhere else in Indonesia. A few words go a looong way and people will be absolutely floored by any attempt made to speak their language. It's so encouraging and sweet.
8
u/CitizenPremier Jul 21 '25
I think Bahasa is also a second language for a lot of people in Indonesia too
8
u/irate_alien Jul 21 '25
Yes. But “bahasa” just means “language” in Malaysian (bahasa Melayu) and Indonesian (bahasa Indonesia). Were writing in English (bahasa inggris). It’s really interesting actually because there Indonesian leaders after independence were mostly Javanese but chose a Malay dialect as the national language because it was already the regional trading language. so most Indonesians speak one or two local languages plus Indonesian. It’s just an endlessly interesting country!

I love it when people make an effort to speak my language, even if it's clear they're struggling.
Tho it kinda hurts on the inside when they start speaking brazilian portuguese rather than portuguese from Portugal. I understand that the brazilian is more widespread, but it still hurts 😢
15
u/LaTeChX Jul 20 '25
I haven't even been able to find a resource for learning Portuguese Portuguese, it's all in Brazilian
12
u/Rui_O_Grande_PT Jul 20 '25
Unfortunately, our country is small, and there isn't really much investment in promoting our language outside our ex-colonies. It also doesn't help that most, if not all, of the search engines out there aren't able to recognise the difference between portuguese from Portugal and from Brasil.
4
u/Raencloud94 Jul 21 '25
It sounds like such a cool language to learn. It's sad there's not many resources easily available. Do I make friends with someone from Portugal to learn? 😅
5
u/Rui_O_Grande_PT Jul 21 '25
Yeah, that might be your best bet. Do keep in mind that Portuguese is one of the more difficult languages to learn, so even with a native speaker, it'll be pretty hard.

I'm German and had the same experience when I went to France, everyone was smiling everywhere but once I asked them anything in English they just didn't want me there anymore.
At some point I started asking if they speak German first, if I switched to English afterwards they stayed happy.
But yeah fuck them for that, makes you feel super unwelcome...
5
u/Taykoh Jul 20 '25
Most of us are just so bad at english it's embarassing, you're probably just making them stress tbh, that or you're in Paris and if that's the case, well.. it's just Paris i guess
3
u/GreasedUpTiger Jul 21 '25
I feel like that's so much more of a non-issue nowadays since we all carry smartphones anyway that aren't just dictionaries but can even translate shit if needed.
Let me tell ya this was so much worse 20 years ago when you are somewhere with your broken, basic language skills and a fucking paper dictionary trying to ask the railroad employee whether you're just about the board the wrong train 🙈
16
u/travturav Jul 20 '25
I would speak in bad French, and especially older people would just stare at me and not respond at all. So now I know not to waste my time there.
14
u/BigBootyBuff Jul 20 '25
Similar. We went to Paris in school, we spoke to the locals in french but due to our obvious accent, we were treated pretty badly. Best case we were ignored. Others told use to fuck off. Some 40 year old fucks figured it's a good use of their time to follow us 16-17 year olds around for 20 minutes to harass and mock them.
2
u/Isariamkia Jul 21 '25
I'm sure that Parisians don't even like to hear other accents of France. I've never went there, but I wonder what they would have to say about my Swiss French accent.

English is a Germanic language that was implanted with a bunch of romance vocabulary. But even the French parts of English are heavily anglicized.
Hence why old English is easier for Germans & Icelandics to understand than it is for modern English speakers.

They also hate Germans I think. Was on vaccation in Paris for about a week or two with a school club. Basically all we got were strange looks when we spoke with each other in German, a class mate was laughed at by some McDonald's staff for speaking bad French and then asking if they spoke English. Some old fart even pushed a friend of mine against a store window because apparently they were in the way. There was only one (1!) friendly French person we met in Paris, which was an older lady gifting us her umbrella as it started to rain that day, and she told us in English how happy she gets whenever she meets people from other parts of the world. So yeah, Paris is a beautiful city....but our experience with the actual residents over there wasn't the best as you can see.
20
u/Taykoh Jul 20 '25

Not saying it’s true just a stereotype everywhere.

4
u/_DuFour_ Jul 21 '25
Parisians in general don’t hate Quebec or Quebecers, but they sometimes make fun of them even if it’s not meant in a bad way but making fun of unkown people can be considered rude. Some just prefer to speak English with their own bad accent for whatever reason.
It only takes one out of five people acting badly for others to assume everyone is like that. I’m pretty sure that 80% or more of Parisians are polite and great, but you might encounter more rude people in restaurants or places that deal with the public than other place.
And french like Quebecers without a doubt, we are cousins after all :D

French person here. Bonjour!
I lived in Paris for a while during my studies. (And then I gladly left this madness asylum behind for a smaller town.)
For the little I have seen, the number one tourist group to face hostility were the Americans.
Not realizing they were super loud in spaces where other people, tourists included, respected the quiet ambience. Not bothering with pleasantries such as hello please thank you. Behaving like everything was entitled to them and their money granted them a "no need to deserve respect" pass.
I can only speak for my personal experience, again. But those tourists, it was irrelevant that they spoke a little or no French at all. They were just a pain in the ass.
10
u/Belkan-Federation95 Jul 21 '25
Sounds like you were dealing with the "loud rich college kid" types and not the "normal everyday American" type
1
u/julebryg Jul 22 '25
As a (Scandinavian) European, most Americans i have met are really loud compared to Europeans. Not just the college kids. I think it’s a culture thing. And being that loud is frowned upon here.
1
u/Belkan-Federation95 Jul 22 '25
Trust me, those are the ones we don't want here either. It's an unfortunate stroke of luck that the majority of the Americans in Europe are loud, noisy, and well off. They just happen to be the class that can afford it.
Of course, if you're an American in Europe you are likely from only a select few areas.
