Jpop using shit ton of English words tho

297

u/melooksatstuff Jul 22 '25

Might as well be japanese with their pronunciations lol

97

u/thatguyiswierd Jul 22 '25

Yea honestly translating katakana is way harder then hiragana and kanji. I’m like running through a thousand English words trying to understand stand what word they are trying to say.

27

u/IrritableFrequency Jul 22 '25

I’m learning Japanese since over 10 years but I’ll never get over the time I’ve first seen the word ライオン in the textbook.

3

u/Undernown Jul 23 '25

They named my country after a colour, I'm equal parts amused and insulted.

8

u/AbstruseDilemma Jul 22 '25

Sometimes they are not loanwords from English at all, like サボテン for cactus (from Portuguese sabão) or ランドセル for backpack (from Dutch ransel)

1

u/AllHailTheWinslow Jul 23 '25

"Ranzen" in German.

1

u/samtt7 Animated Flair Rainbow [Insert Your Own Text] Jul 22 '25

That's only if you read it. Hearing it combined with the correct pitch accent makes it usually really easy to understand. There are some exceptions like abbreviations, but in general it's not too hard, unless they're really trying to speak English with katakana-eigo

3

u/ToumaKazusa1 Jul 22 '25

Let me just turn the eacon on, before I sit down and use my pasocon to research something about Igirisu.

2

u/thatguyiswierd Jul 22 '25

HAHAHAHAHAHA

1

u/ToumaKazusa1 Jul 23 '25

After I get back from my baito, I'll probably buy a new teburu, and swing by the conbini to get some puroresu chiketto.

15

u/BringBackSoule Jul 22 '25

The english also doesnt make sense. I love Sawano, and the ReCreators soundtrack is some of his best work, but looking up the lyrics has worsened the experience for me.

13

u/Harddicc Jul 22 '25

Songs like You are my Special is famous although its not from a boyband

4

u/MerleTravisJennings Jul 22 '25

Seriously. Just pick the songs for either K-pop or Jpop.

2

u/Julio3010 Jul 22 '25

That’s just japanese in general lmao

0

u/Diabetesh Jul 22 '25

J everything popular has some english. Like 90% of hits have at least a catchphrase.

OP is a poser.

JPOP didnt blow up till the early 2000s when Hikaru Utuda did the whole "some english some japanese" thing and blew up with Simple and Clean.

That was what allowed mainstream non English songs to flourish and surely the same thing will happen in time woth Kpop.

71

u/SadisticJake Jul 22 '25

I came up with Bemani games so i kinda thought Jpop came way sooner but yeah, simple and clean was the early high water mark

9

u/Yung-October Jul 22 '25

Wrong it was bands like XJapan and Other like GACKT. Utuda blow up cuz of KH

3

u/JotaroTheOceanMan Jul 23 '25

While they got foots in the door when it came to mainstream appeal it was Utuda imo that made it way more common.

Amd of course, early 2000s anime having banger intros and outros on Toonami and Adult Swim.

2

u/Yung-October Jul 23 '25

Yeah I do agree on that Utada did make it common she a hella brilliant artist.

2

u/The00Taco I asked for a flair and all I got was this lousy flair Jul 22 '25

I absolutely fucking love that song in KH

For anyone wondering the translation:

"We have no intention of translating song titles or lyrics to appease foreigners, who should enjoy music the way it was meant to be enjoyed."

19

u/PsionicKitten Jul 22 '25

Can confirm.

But I also can say, learning Japanese did not allow me to understand Jpop any better. Hell, I can't understand lyrics in English usually, much less Japanese. Sure, I'll pick out a word here and there but that's about it, regardless of language.

158

u/Nenwabu Jul 22 '25

Lol K-pop isn't just BTS or Blackpink; there's actually legitimately good Korean music that isn't filled with English words if you look hard enough beyond surface level.

Especially 2000s and old Korean music is pretty dope.

57

u/Head-Contribution393 Jul 22 '25

But those authentic Kpop is only for domestic market. This is why I like 2000s authentic Kpop. But 2020s Kpop marketed to the US market? They are like 90% English. Look at Rose’s APT. It’s technically 100% English with a Korean pronunciation of the word apartment.

20

u/Nenwabu Jul 22 '25

Exactly, I personally don't like foreign marketed K-POP either cause it lacks Korean.

Just look for K-POP thats domestic marketed, its way better tbh.

2

u/eXeKoKoRo Jul 22 '25

I don't think there's anything wrong with marketed music. A lot of times the songs get EN, KR and JP versions

43

u/rocket20067 Jul 22 '25

The songs beat out actual Kpop as well. As Your idol is currently number one in the US and Golden is Currently number 2 Beating out both BTS and Blackpink for the highest rated Boy and girl groups.

100% of the time, it's 75% English.

5

u/JD4Destruction Jul 22 '25 edited Jul 22 '25

Japan’s music industry is big enough that they don’t really give a crap what outsiders think. Korea’s smaller domestic market forced them to go outside to the rest of Asia. Breaking into the U.S. market has been failing for years until roughly 10 years ago

3

u/renome Jul 22 '25

I don't know about Kpop but this is just flat-out wrong for Jpop, which featured plenty of English since at least the '80s.

15

u/Piranh4Plant E🅱️ic Memer Jul 22 '25

5

u/Head-Contribution393 Jul 22 '25

Kpop is being marketed to global audiences, so I understand. But the Kpop songs that became successful around the world all had it in English 95% of the lyrics, which I think it’s too much.

Jpop uses English words here and there, but English doesn’t make up for 95% of the lyrics. They account for much less than 10%.

This is why I like 2000s Kpop, where artists actually had talent and uses Korean most of the time - instead of 2020s Kpop where they just imitate American electro disco genre pop music.

9

u/BeholdMySweatyMeat Jul 22 '25

So PUBG just did a whole kpop thing and I'm like this is just English.

2

u/N-Freak <3 Jul 22 '25

2

u/sweetdurt Jul 22 '25

そうだ!音楽芸術は変わらせてみてはいけないんだろう!

2

u/poikolle Jul 22 '25

Nah dude you are so biased. Kpop might put sentences in there but jpop just randomly puts 2 english words in there per sentence; but pronounced so scuffed that you think its something in japanese.

4

u/kenshi_hiro Jul 22 '25

Unlike Kpop, Jpop is made for it's own people. And there's some thought put into the lyrics and composition. The 2 kpop songs that I like are actually their folk songs lol.

3

u/IvanOG_Ranger I have Shrek's cock up my butt Jul 22 '25

Only "J-pop" I know is babymetal, and they use english quite a lot

4

u/BankaiRasenshuriken Wants to die Jul 22 '25

You're missing out. Check out some bands like Asian Kung-Fu Generation, FLOW, PornoGraffiti, Aqua Timez, Hearts Grow, or NICO Touches the Walls

2

u/NigeroMinna Jul 23 '25

You forgot about Man with a Mission, Mrs Green Apple, Takigawa Arisa, Myth and Roid.

6

u/BaptizedDemxn Jul 22 '25

I don’t hate kpop but when i catch English words in the songs they lowkey make no sense.
Like id rather there not even be there, id rather be listening to someone singing about how much they are into scat in a language I don’t understand than to listen to that.

16

u/Experiunce Jul 22 '25

You are thinking of kpop from 2000s. There are modern artists that have entire songs in English.

It was fucking hilarious hearing old kpop though where they throw in like a phrase that makes absolutely no sense lmao. Same with Jpop and some of the OG anime openings

2

u/EECavazos Jul 22 '25

I can't wait for J Pop Demon Hunters to be released.

3

u/leeverpool Jul 22 '25

Jpop also used English tho. That's where k-pop got it from. Also, it works. Sorry, but it works.

1

u/fhede- Jul 22 '25

I know that it's not pop but it's still Japanese so I'm going to say it.

I remember listening to the album resurrection by Galneryus and every single song was in English, so exceptions exist. Very good exceptions, that album is amazing.

1

u/Egg11663 Jul 22 '25

We just forget XG exists? Same type of shit Black Pink is doing. Plenty of Kpop artists only doing like 10% English in their songs and same with Japanese.

1

u/iamnazrak Jul 22 '25

Jpop. Nah Jmetal 🤌🏻

u/Kiyan1159 Jul 22 '25

1

u/RedRice94 Jul 22 '25

Redditors when people just want to be popular:

1

u/SpiderGyan Jul 22 '25

Jpop uses English too, but i feel Jpop had better lyrics that compliment the music and you'll find it at the most weird places.

For example forget me not by ReoNa

"So this is me 重すぎる鎧で 歩けなくなった 臆病な勇者 愛されたくて 守りたくて振 るった剣は

差し出された手に刺さって抜 けないよ

まだ 癒えないまま life goes on

Oh, everything turns to ash to ash

命は彼方を目指す

傷つけた罪と痛み 引き摺って

And everything turns to dust to dust

倒れて土に還るとき

せめて小さな花がほら 咲きま すように

Forget-me-not"

It's one of the best lyrics out there is Jpop but no one cares. The music also compliments the melancholic feels.

1

u/bean_vendor Jul 22 '25

Exactly! Psy didn't get famous for singing his songs in English, he got famous for making good songs in Korean.

1

u/PriorCraft6238 Jul 23 '25

even when K-pop was mostly in Korean, it was more popular than J-pop
