But it isn't well-documented as either of those things? If it was false, we wouldn't have the evidence. And if it was self-inflicted, it would still be a problem that we need to solve.
Actually, it’s pretty well documented through simple statistics. It takes a lot more hoop jumping to make the pay gap appear sexist than it does to show this.
Most of it is caused by pregnancy leave and overall choosing to work less hours. If you take those factors out and compare men and women on an hourly basis, the pay gap all but disappears with the only remaining percentage showing that men are slightly more aggressive about asking for that raise.
Yes and no. You're leaving out the fact incredibly risky, horrible jobs no one wants are dominated by men and because they're undesirable and endanger life have perks such as higher pay to it incentivize applicants.
Then, on top of that women-dominated fields are not always high paying careers or actual careers in the first place. Moms work two minimum wage jobs and make up a considerable amount of this pay gap to a lawyer or doctor. The women who are doctors and lawyers can't make the real data 'even out'.
What the other guy who got downvoted a bunch said is true as well. Census data, labor stats, women's and men's choices and actual shitty and/or sexist practices by employers who want to pay ANY person less regardless of race and gender are NOT mutually exclusive. They all add together. smfh.

It is well documented as false or self inflicted.
