“corporations are corrupt and screw their workers over at every opportunity, but despite the fact that they can get away with paying women 85% of what they can men they choose to have predominantly male workforces. The sexist bastards!”

Fuck, it makes me chuckle every time

My girlfriend, years ago, worked at a company that would occasionally like to hire from within. My girlfriend had been a receptionist and was now in a leadership role due to that practice.

It was time to hire someone to fill a newly vacant position. It was entry level for what it was, and she was a part of the interviewing team for it. The then-receptionist applied for the job. When the group decided to give them the position the CEO offered this person a lower rate than the other entry level hires.

When my girlfriend pointed out that wasn’t fair since the other equally inexperienced hires who filled similar entry positions would be making more than this hire even though she had experience with the company the CEO said, “but the pay bump is good for HER, why would I pay even higher?”

And that is just one example of how the pay gap can start. Because she was guilty of already being a trustworthy employee who knew some of the ins and outs of the company but wasn’t being paid well, when she got a better position at the same company her pay was less than that of her equals. Most of whom were men.

That happens to anyone who takes an internal promotion. Now, she can quit her job at a higher level and command a better paycheck at her next employer.

Yeah but this is dumb. I want companies to be forced to offer equal pay so that folks have the freedom to choose whether to stay at the company which they may really like or to leave
