I feel like its the opposite. Youtube forces native language automaticly with crappy ai dubs while I want it in original english.

u/PenguinBread 13h ago

This. And it's so annoying that you can't disable these garabage AI translations wether it's these dubbed shorts or all the video titles. Only option is to change your language to english but then they would probably translate the stuff from your native language into english lmao

3

u/CHONPSCa 12h ago

And it doesn't make it any better XD the ai just mutes it when it can't translate it. That or say random stuff based on what it understood.

You can disable the ai dub in the vid. i saw an "original audio" or something. It's under settings.

Depends what you have as main language set

YouTube can't comprehend knowing more than 1 language

165

u/CatCatPizza 13h ago

I guess I must have been changing the wrong settings then. Entire UI and all of that stuff is english but still it does that.

69

u/divat10 Dank Cat Commander 12h ago

There is another language setting for your preferred language that handles the AI dubs.

Youtube also just changes this back after every update :/

68

u/Shadowchaoz 10h ago

It doesn't solve the problem tho, because now it tries to translate videos in your native language into english. You can't win and this forced shit needs to go.

29

u/PLOKS- 10h ago

I use an add-on on Firefox that fixes this. Actually I have like 8 specifically for YouTube because off all the bullshit that's on that site

8

u/Shadowchaoz 9h ago

Same I also have an extention to fix many idiotic things youtube does. It's still annoying that we have to resort to that.

3

u/The_Neto06 5h ago

ublock, return yt dislike, sponsorblock, yt search fixer, enhancer for youtube, betterttv

u/divat10 Dank Cat Commander 4h ago

Yeah thats true it fucking sucks

6

u/Pristine-Breath6745 10h ago

same for me. its annoying af.

23

u/AncleJack EX-NORMIE 12h ago

O hate it when youtube translates my Polish titles into English (at least it's less cringe then the opposite) but at least on pc you there is a browser extension that disables it

2

u/DinoChrono 10h ago

Thank you for that information! I'm installing it like... right now!

37

u/gilbatron 12h ago

It doesn't really depend on anything and seems to be completely arbitrary for me.

The translations are also completely arbitrary and of atrocious quality. It feels like they are using google translate from 2016 to do them

22

u/Vectorial1024 12h ago

It seems pretty American to think people can only know 1 language (usually English); well YouTube is an American tech company after all.

I'm a native French speaker, but I prefer to set my YT English, since I mostly watch English content. At least you can still deactivate the HORRIBLE auto-dubs, but titles and bios are still getting translated, which is annoying. There should be a bilingual option.

7

u/YueOrigin 11h ago

Recently been checking out one of my childhood French youtuber after spending years with English only.

Hearing the robotic voice instead of his iconic voice shocked me

That settings really pissed me off for a moment...

Google is even worse with search settings.

Sometimes they reset by settings and go back to drench results

Hell they still give me a French result first then english below when im looking up anything pokemon related...

u/MACHLoeCHER Eic memer 12h ago

Depends what you have as main language set

Nah, it's an absolute mess. I have English set, as my main language. Some video titles get translated, others don't (I don't want any translation, but that's not an option). Some shorts get auto-dubbed without the option to turn it off, others don't. At least I can turn off the auto-translation with regular videos, but why don't they just give me the option to translate, instead of making the decision for me. Also Youtube always forces one video, in a random language on my frontpage, to really push this "feature".

The forced auto-translation is the worst feature, they ever added. Even if I would speak only one language, I just don't see how this could appeal to me.

3

u/Jpporta 11h ago

but now videos from my country gets translated to english … there is no winning only deception

2

u/Some-Cat8789 11h ago

Yep, same problem here. I have everything in English and YouTube is AI-dubbing my native language videos even if my browser clearly lists my native language as second preferred. Piece of shit. At least they mostly rolled back that recent horrible UI change (you still can't scroll down while in full screen).

1

u/SurelyNotAnOctopus 8h ago

Yeah, and ive seen it both ways.

I speak both French and English fluently, yet YT seems to often auto dub English to French, and french to English. Just give me the original dammit, is that so hard?

9

u/Barlowan (my) Life is a meme 12h ago

I'm mostly watching YouTube in English, but I fluently speak other 4 languages and when I want to watch the video in any of those languages, YouTube forces it's AI shitty translation upon me. But, when it's Japanese, German, languages I don't speak and wouldn't mind having at least translated captions - it's all in original language, captions included!

2

u/Donrummata 11h ago

Works the other way for me. It forces crappy dubs in enlish ant translates everything that is russian (even titles). Annoying as hell…

2

u/baguetteispain 10h ago

I feel like it's both

I want to watch a video in my native language? Fuck you, English. An English video ? Haha, NOW it's your native language

1

u/Wedos98 6h ago

I stopped watching some channels because of that, that annoying AI voice that for some reason cannot be disabled fully ruining the original video tone and speed because it cannot match the delivery.

1

u/Gorfyx 2h ago

That's the main problem, the fucking AI translation, it is just horrible. There are some good translations, like the ones Glitch does to its series, but holy fuck, those channels that uses automatic translation, I think they're just scaring away the people that speaks those languages, because, WOW, it is so trash, I can't say enough how shit it is.

351

u/Komec 13h ago

Imo, dubbing videos is just stupid. How are you supposed to get comfortable and learn the language if you are not exposing yourself to a foreign language?

253

u/piewca_apokalipsy ☣️ 12h ago

Translating titles is worse and you can't even turn it off

106

u/adorgu 12h ago

I hate that, it often loses context when translated.

68

u/ivar-the-bonefull 11h ago

Google has started to auto AI translate all reddit posts when I try to find stuff or opinions in my native language. Haven't seen any way to turn it off.

It's so fucking badly translated. I can't fathom why the fuck they are doing this.

13

u/Soren59 8h ago

Google hasn't cared about making good services for ages. They will actively make their service worse in order to shove AI down everyone's throats in justify all the money and resources they're throwing at it.

5

u/ruby_R53 9h ago

i've noticed that as well, it even translates the posts to languages i haven't even considered learning in the first place

3

u/ruler14222 6h ago

I hate the google result translation and then hiding it in the AI result. whenever I look up something law related it just takes the top result and spits it out as if it's my local law. have to keep sharp and realize the AI will just lie to me

1

u/Amrelll Virgins in Paris 11h ago

It has slight bugs, but I use "YouTube No Translation" that turns off **all** the translate nonsense

13

u/rober9999 12h ago

It would be a good feature if only you could turn it off

5

u/Clumsy_Claus 11h ago

You're supposed to use Google instead of learning the language yourself.

1

u/SirNedKingOfGila 6h ago

Human concerns take a backseat to AI.

87

u/C418Enjoyer 12h ago

no, youtube. I don't need shitty ai translators that don't work properly when i have captions (a better way of knowing what someone is saying)

8

u/toms1313 10h ago

even then I've had Korean captions appear out of nowhere when clicking a new video. I have the devices on Spanish and also speak English, where thee fuq is Korean coming from?

3

u/Mysteriy21 7h ago

I’ve occasionally had that happen, but with arabic subtitles, when I’ve never watched or done anything with that language

26

u/_whatever_idc 13h ago

Or when you, God forbid, go abroad and everything is in Greek or some shit.

u/Asocial_Stoner 12h ago

Americans trying to conceive of multilingual people challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)

8

u/Wedos98 6h ago

I just want the option to disable them. I'm tired of auto translating videos, shorts and video names to Spanish, 99% of the content I watch is on English. Yes, my account is on Spanish because I'm from Chile...And that somehow tells them "He doesn't speak english" ?!?!

42

u/Altruistic-Poem-5617 11h ago

The shitty ai translates foraighn titles into your native language and its infuriating. Im german but can speak fluid english, just let me have the english title if the video is in english.

17

u/Dooltesy 11h ago

This! I hate that YouTube decides for me that I'll only get content in one language. I want to see everything in the original language, even if I don't understand it, so I at least know which country the video is from, and if I want to, I can switch to the translation myself. But instead, the titles of English videos are translated into my language, and if I switch to English in the settings, videos from my country are translated into English, which is so annoying. I think we should make more of a big deal out of the fact that YouTube supposedly knows better than you how to get foreign content.

6

u/skaersSabody 9h ago

I am getting a stroke trying to get YouTube to just show me a video title in its og language.

Like ffs, I watch content in three languages, why are all the titles in English? WHERE DO IT TURN THAT OFF?

3

u/piewca_apokalipsy ☣️ 9h ago

That's the neet part. You can't.

11

u/CHONPSCa 12h ago

First time i encountered the ai dub, i thought the youtuber was the one who put it. It made almost no sense and the guy was just saying random shit which made me check settings and found out about it

5

u/Hot-Acanthaceae4084 10h ago

It's wild how platforms assume we all want everything translated. I'd much rather have the option to hear the original audio, especially for language learning. Forcing a dub just removes the authenticity of the creator's actual voice. It really does feel like a weirdly monolingual approach to a global audience.

4

u/Mathew1979 11h ago

Nah, youtube makes it worse, even if i change all youtube settings it still translates video titles and puts polish subtitles into everything, especially on youtube music.
I was once confused when "the amazing Digital Circus" was in Polish

4

u/ThingWithChlorophyll 10h ago

I have every setting as english, picked usa as my location, my entire device is english with no other languages installed.

Idk what sorcery they use but I still get videos translated to my native language as default

4

u/Vexerino1337 10h ago

Bro I hate this auto dubbing shit, actually improve on the captioning ffs that'd be more useful than what yt is doing rn.

6

u/SteveoberlordEU 11h ago

What pisses me off are the titles that sometimes make no sense.

3

u/Drobex 9h ago

Everyrime Youtube decides to put an automatic robot voice shouting shit on top of some English video I want to see I understand murderers.

Youtube is utterly unusable without addons these days.

2

How stupid must you be to not allow users to toggle such a massive feature. None of this would be an issue if I could just turn it off. Now I have to use another stupid fucking thingy (extension?) on Firefox.

2

u/jas23667 11h ago

Delete this nephew, they gonna make it a premium feature.

Wrong meme format. In this case, bilingual people are sleeping peacefully, which is NOT CASE 🤬

1

u/prestonpiggy 7h ago

Eng is not my native but I feel like I'm better at it than my useless one. The less translation the less there are errors. Shit even Android phones in finnish are nonsense since they try to force-translate clearly a foreign words. Like thank god Bluetooth is trademarked, if not it would be translated as is.

1

u/ProfessionalAble7713 2h ago

Hang on there are fake Papua New Guineas?

1

u/luxudor 12h ago

Everyone's talking about AI dubs, but this is my first time hearing about them. And I watch content in (mainly 2) but sometimes up to 4 languages.

4

u/arix_games 10h ago

It probably comes down to who you watch. I think enabling AI dubbing is on the uploaders end, and some people disable it while others don't

2

u/piewca_apokalipsy ☣️ 9h ago

I made this meme with auto translated titles in mind since you can turn off dub

0

u/luxudor 7h ago

I haven't seen auto translated titles either tho? I just went and checked, and I still see titles in their original language.

Maybe it's about who you watch, as the other commenter suggested.

I average about 1 video a month for my native language everything else is English I consume English speaking media and rarely my native tongue
