In my opinion, everyone should be respected until proven otherwise. The other way around makes you seem unlikeable, because you're being an ass to everyone until they "earn" your respect. Maybe it's just me though.

I just stay neutural and careful in a conversation, not really respecting the person but not necessarily disrespecting them, until I find out more about him.

I still remember this 65 year old dude at a garage I interned at named Ron tried to get me to do the “garbage dance” he legit wanted me to climb into a dumpster and squish down the garbage in the dumpster to make room for more trash. I stood my ground though and we negotiated to not freaking do it. At least he had a nice little beagle named Scout

No one should “earn” your respect, you should start off by respecting the other person and then stop if they deserve it.

I believe in respecting people until they give me a reason not to.
Elders just get a little bit more leeway. Just a little.

Not all elderly deserve respect, but understanding. Elders have been through a lot in their youth, adolescent and adulthood that we don't know. They know more than us so they deserve UNDERSTANDING, it's not a choice growing old with a life trauma or nightmares behind which causes you negative behavior that will tarnish your life forever.
17
u/uneducatedramen WhAT iS a FlAiR?!? Mar 30 '21
But we won't know which one of them have traumas that cause the negative behavior or which one of them are simply youth hating assholes cuz I met a lot of those assholes they only were respectful to other adults I got treated like I just slapped their dog

Exactly. You don’t need to admire people just because they are older, but you should always regard others feelings that have been shaped by their own life experiences which are far different than your own experiences. You can’t expect someone born decades ago to have the same experiences, and therefore the same thoughts as you.
-1
Mar 30 '21
All elders have earnt it by default, unless there is a clear reason as to why they shouldn't have it

Mar 30 '21
So by that same logic we shouldn’t “respect all women” and should respect those who deserve it right?

Yes. If they deserve respect then give them respect. If they don’t then don’t

Eh, it happens, people like to act like they'll respect everyone no matter what happens, which is just a straight lie and I'm guessing all the people who downvoted the comment are karen's and boomers that think you should respect everyone who's older then you and that has to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard people say, it's fine though, I'm not gonna let a few pussys ruin my day😁

This is a huge distinction point that has led to me getting into multiple arguments as a child because some adult would berate me for something stupid, and I'd mouth off REAL quick. Dad taught me only adult to be afraid of was him, and I damn sure ain't ever forgot that.

Honestly there’s such a misconception about “respecting” adults that is SO oversold, it’s insane. If they cross the line, I don’t care how old they are, I will be fucking rude. Being old isn’t an excuse to act superior or like an asshole, and no it also doesn’t mean you’re wiser lmao

Had some old guy come into my clinic, said he didn't want to he examined. Asked why he came in: "because that damn doctor told me too". Told him that it's his choice if he didn't want treatment, got mad and stormed out, said I was disrespectful, I told him he was being disrespectful and he retorted "I have grandkids your age, I'm not disrespectful". Wanted so badly to say "that's the same logic as saying someone isn't racist bc they have a friend that's a different race as them". smfh

There’s a difference between being respectful and being polite to someone. You can always be polite and treat everyone with manners. But respect is something that should be earned. No matter how old you are.
