Yup. People used to farm downvotes and compete to get the lowest overall karma. So they capped it per comment and at -500 as the lowest possible for an account.

Nah, some threads and places could be ruined by folks specifically trying to farm downvoted, derailing anything resembling relevant conversations

Why would someone farm negative karma and not karma? (Also it would be cool to see EA with infinite negative karma)

Because it's a billion times easier to be a dickhead and get a big negative number than it is to get upvotes and these people just crave attention of some form.

people used to farm negative karma so they had to severely cap how much you could lose from downvotes.
