No one spoke about hate, but dislike.

In all seriousness, I was more referring to the people that genuinely hate weebs and if you're not one of those people, cool

I'm probably just dumb but..what?(i apologise for my lack of English knowledge. This problem is caused by my lack of english practice, making me unable to understand a lot word that you are speaking of. I once again sincerely apologise.)

You win eitherway.

No one but us looked this shit up.

You were right.

u/dom_pi Jan 23 '22

actually since he's trying to emphasise something here it could be counted as correct in the way that it's a poetic tool he's using to convey his point (with more emotion/feeling).

Otaku: (in Japan) a young person who is obsessed with computers or particular aspects of popular culture to the detriment of their social skills.

"every other otaku can run on about their hobby endlessly"

4

u/SuperSMT reposts all over the damn place Jan 23 '22

So nerd basically

42

u/doge__boi Jan 23 '22

I think it's the other way around. So weeb is the "I wanna be japanese" kind and otaku is "I like anime (a lot I guess)". But you're kind of right since anime watchers are using weeb as a non-derogatory term and are calling themselves weeb even if they only like anime. The original meaning of the word weeb is shifting

0

u/Soviet_Doggo__ EX-NORMIE Jan 23 '22

The term otaku means obsessed with culture or whatever someone else said so its the opposite of what you said

28

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

No, an Otaku is someone that's obsessed with anime and games. It's a Japanese term.

2

u/Fatalis_1021 Jan 23 '22

So much so that they never leave their room, in a manner similar to that of a redditor. They typically rely on family members to bring them food and water out of pity.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

Ok, that's a bit too far. I do leave the room. They need to use the bathroom every now and then.

1

u/Fatalis_1021 Jan 23 '22

Fair, but that's only once they run out of XXL sized adult diapers.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

Ok dude, it was fun at first. But now you're just getting personal.

1

u/Fatalis_1021 Jan 23 '22

What're you gonna do, go outside and fight me?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

I didn't say it was personal to me. I meant you, you're being very descriptive about being an Otaku. How do you know so much about them? Are you one of them? Are you using these insults to show what your life is like?

1

u/Fatalis_1021 Jan 23 '22

Otaku feels threatened, retaliates by lashing out at others

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

OH FOR GOD SAKE. I WAS MAKING A JOKE. Why can no one take a joke today?

u/IamWeirdasfmdr ☣️ Jan 23 '22

Not, it's weaboos, otaku is someone that's obsessed with anime, but doesn't want to be a 2d Japanese character.

79

u/Romi_Z Jan 23 '22

I have never seen a weeb that wants to become a 2D japanese character

16

u/No-Hovercraft-6600 Jan 23 '22

You called? [For legal reasons, this is a joke]

3

u/Romi_Z Jan 23 '22

I don't think having a desire to become 2D japanese person is illegal

3

u/No-Hovercraft-6600 Jan 23 '22

The FBI thinks otherwise

2

u/wafflepocalypse_ Jan 23 '22

Have you heard of Vtubers?

2

u/xnyxverycix Jan 23 '22

every weaboo wants to jump infront of a truck and be reincarnated as a demon king and have their own harem of big tiddy fantast girls.

0

u/IamWeirdasfmdr ☣️ Jan 23 '22

You haven't seen it, YET.

21

u/Gonzogonzip Jan 23 '22

Weeb comes from Weaboo though, doesn't? And I thought Otaku was just a Japanese slang term for nerd, regardless of topic, but since Japanese culture is pretty strong a lot of Japanese are very interested in Japanese things thus they're more likely to be nerds for relatively local things.

Like, a Japanese person might call an American who is obsessed with marvel a marvel-otaku.

Thats at least how I think of it.

5

u/IamWeirdasfmdr ☣️ Jan 23 '22

"Otaku is a Japanese word that describes people with consuming interests, particularly in anime and manga" Most of what you said it true, but weeb and weaboo are really different.

3

u/RedLightning259 Jan 23 '22

Weeb means anyone who likes anime, even tho the word itself came from weeaboo

Weaboo means someone who isn't Japanese but is so obsessed with Japan that they wish they were

Otaku is Japanese slang for nerd

3

u/theyfoundty Jan 23 '22

This is entirely incorrect by defintion.

You people clearly don't know Japanese culture like you want to.

1

u/IamWeirdasfmdr ☣️ Jan 23 '22

That's not weather, or not I'm the master of Japanese culture. It's just about what a word means, and I happen to know what it actually means.

1

u/JFloriturin Jan 23 '22

Welp, you should search for the meaning of those words. The real meaning, not something you read on an anime forum

2

u/IamWeirdasfmdr ☣️ Jan 23 '22

"Otaku (Japanese: おたく, オタク, or ヲタク) is a Japanese word that describes people with consuming interests, particularly in anime and manga" "A weeaboo is a non-Japanese person who is obsessed with Japanese culture. They frequently denounce their own culture, and speak frequently about Japanese culture being superior to others in various ways." "A weeb is a person who is interested in anime and Japanese culture. There is an important difference between a weeb and a weeaboo." and I just did, sir.

1

u/JFloriturin Jan 23 '22

Yup, this is correct, it's not exclusive to anime or manga.

2

u/Mozotis Jan 23 '22

Nah, If I'm not mistaken, a weeaboo or weeb is someone who is obsessed with Japan, anime, and the whole culture surrounding them. Also, it's sometimes common to see them mixing in Japanese words into their normal speech.

An otaku is someone SPECIFICALLY from Japan, who has an obsession with anything considered geeky, i.e. video games, computers, anime, etc.

1

u/Nattomuncher Jan 23 '22

Close but otaku is a Japanese word but can be used to describe a person of any nationality.

1

u/Mozotis Jan 23 '22

Really? I've heard that it's generally only used for specifically Japanese people, but I suppose it's just the word for nerd in Japan.

1

u/Nattomuncher Jan 23 '22

Well it's a Japanese word so it will only be used by japanese speakers. My friend (japanese) called me (not japanese) idol otaku years ago for fun for example.

1

u/Mozotis Jan 23 '22

Yeah, that makes sense. Lol my bad.

1

u/Nattomuncher Jan 23 '22

Wrong with tons of upvotes lol

1

u/IamWeirdasfmdr ☣️ Jan 23 '22

I would really like you to argue with me on how I could be wrong, while respecting each other of course. This is the literal definition of an otaku " person having an intense or obsessive interest especially in the fields of anime and manga", and this is the literal definition of weaboo "A person who retains an unhealthy obsession with Japan and Japanese culture' and weeb meaning "a person who is interested in anime and Japanese culture."

1

u/Nattomuncher Jan 23 '22

Otaku means an obsessed person. You can also be an idol otaku, or a train otaku (google train otaku they exist lol) it's just most common to be obsessed with manga or anime. Then just because you found some English website giving definition of otaku doesn't make it correct, you know what I mean? In the pokemon games do you remember the "super nerd" trainers? They had lines like "do you love Clefairy too? Look at my Clefairy!" They were obsessed with a thing: Clefairy in this example. Super nerd trainers in Japanese were called otaku.

1

u/IamWeirdasfmdr ☣️ Jan 23 '22

Well, I assume people can't get their mind right, I was told to 'do some research, not on a weeb form' It wasn't just on some random English website, it was by my own Japanese knowledge that I got for non weaboo reasons, and some stuff I found on wikipedia.

1

u/Nattomuncher Jan 23 '22

"Your knowledge" in Japanese is severely underwhelming if you think otaku limits itself to anime/manga.

1

u/IamWeirdasfmdr ☣️ Jan 23 '22

I never assumed that, but indeed my Japanese is indeed bad, but no, my knowledge is superior about that word.

2

u/The_Diego_Brando ☢️☢️ Jan 23 '22

" (In Japan) a young person who is obsessed with computers or particular aspects of popular culture to the detriment of their social skills. "

So most weebs are otakus but not all otakus are weebs

2

u/SnowBoy1008 I haven't pooped in 3 months Jan 23 '22

Otaku is just nerd

A Japan Otaku however. Is a Nerd for Japanese culture

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

It used to be the opposite the “weaboo” word was used for obsessed people but for some reason literally everyone started calling themselves WEEBS while the word is supposed to be otaku and they’ve reversed the meanings of both phrases and it’s honestly mildly infuriating just pick one for fucks sake.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

an otaku is an anime+manga fan

a weeb is an all out japanese culture fan.

so most of the anime people are otakus

-2

u/Relativistic_Duck Jan 23 '22

So why can japanese person be otaku? Weebs are people who dress up as naruto and use japanese words and naruto run. But today if you have anything to do with anything japanese most people call you a weeb.

1

u/Genprey Jan 23 '22

Otaku originally referred to Japanese people that are the equivalent of geeks in Western culture. Specifically, it means something along the lines of having an obsessive interest related to games and anime/manga.

With the rise of anime outside of Japan, the term's meaning is different depending on who/where it's being used. In the West, Otakus are pretty much just geeks with a heavy interest in Japanese media. They may also like content from other Countries besides Japan, but if you were to walk into their room, they may have shelves of manga, posters, figures, etc. For all intents and purposes, they're just normal anime fans with some more investment in their hobby.

Weeb is more of a derogatory term (although it's also used lightly) that refers to individuals who are obsessive and loud, if not a bit obnoxious with their hobby. They can be confrontational when it comes to Japanese culture, example being those who attack others for watching English Dubs of anime.

To my knowledge, Otaku, as referred to those in Japan, is still derogatory, and as a result, many fans of manga/anime enjoy themselves behind closed doors.

1

u/ROGUE_COSMIC Did somebody say cool? Jan 23 '22

nope, otaku is someone who stays locked up in their room all the time and dpends their time playing games or watching anime or other nerdy stuff

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

Folks who lock themselves in their rooms are hikikomori.

0

u/ROGUE_COSMIC Did somebody say cool? Jan 23 '22

No, hikikomori are those who run around naked and keep telling "return to monke"

1

u/God_Spaghetti Jan 23 '22

That's a weaboo

It goes like this:

Weeblet < weeb < softcore otaku < hardcore otaku < weaboo

Watching daily on places like netflix and crunchyroll makes you a weeb

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

Nope

1

u/gwaraah Jan 23 '22

Otaku is basically the Japanese term for someone obsessed with anime and games, weeb is a term for non-Japanese people who are overly attached to Japanese culture (not just anime), just liking anime does not make you a weeb but that’s just kinda what people on the internet go with these days

1

u/hunthell Jan 23 '22

Otaku and weeks are the same thing. The o lyrics difference is that an otaku is a Japanese person living in Japan and weeks live anywhere except Japan.

1

u/Landsharkeisha Use Rainbows to hide the Painbows Jan 23 '22

An Otaku is usually a Japanese person who is a shut-in, no? I always thought a weeb was an outsider who glamorizes Japanese pop culture and would denounce their own culture in favor of Japanese culture.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

A shut-in is a hikikomori. Otaku in Japan basically means a geek/nerd (there can be gun otaku, car otaku, etc), but in the west otaku means an anime geek/nerd. Weeabos wanna be japanese to the point of cringe.

1

u/xX_DeusVult_Xx Jan 23 '22

No otaku is the Japanese weeb. They don’t need to wish to be in the culture, they already are. Kind of like a less extreme NEET.

1

u/2thousand1hondacivic Jan 23 '22

No, an otaku is literally just the japanese word for socially awkward nerds. The guy your replied to is right.

1

u/theyfoundty Jan 23 '22

No it's a weeabo. Otaku means being japanese addicted to tech and computers.

Neither mean a non Japanese person loving anime.

How do you have this many upvotes lmao. Did no one else search the terms. All websites I'm checking corroborate with what I'm saying.

1

u/Tryignan Jan 23 '22

Otaku is just the Japanese word for nerd. Anyone who calls themselves an otaku is a weeb.

1

u/ssijmijajo7w7 Jan 23 '22 edited Jan 23 '22

Otaku is a person, who's obsessed with their hobby like anime, manga, video games, or even lego. Weeb is a non Japanese person, who learned about Japanese culture from anime, or indirect sources.

1

u/Nattomuncher Jan 23 '22

This has wrong but has 500+ upvotes, reddit moment.
