I'll never understand people taking their eyes off the road when traveling at high speed.

Some people zone out when driving. When I was in drivers Ed, I was taught to scan the road for hazards and look at different points to stop Highway hypnosis.

On an emptier roadway I can understand this. The highway in the video has plenty of traffic. No excuse for zoning out.

22

u/kainp12 Jul 31 '25

You are right no reason to zone out. I will not ride in car with my brother as the driver because he turns the music on and zones out .

14

u/NearbyTrouble2875 Jul 31 '25

And some people phone out when driving.

7

u/First_Pay702 Jul 31 '25

This is why I keep the radio on as opposed to a playlist: the switching up between songs and the DJ chatter keeps me in the present.

If you are zoning out and aren’t under the influence your brain should automatically start pull out of it if something unexpected happens. I often find myself zoning out and I only realize I was zoning out when something is in my field of view that my brain pulled my conscious mind into.

Ummmm, who is this Ed person and was that not even more distracting?

Ed from Ed,Edd and Eddy.

Damn good show, to be fair

3

u/Open-Year2903 Jul 31 '25

Just taught my daughter about scanning, thoughts of drivers Ed on my mind.

Next time you're walking down the road try and make eye contact with every driver who passes you. Youll struggle. Over 50% are looking at their lap or their dash.

u/Contagious_Zombie Jul 31 '25

It’s ego. It's the sense that you're better than that and will know how to react. Overconfidence and ego destroys a lot of lives. It’s a common infliction.

u/Liveitup1999 Jul 31 '25

He was probably watching a movie.  I saw a guy once driving down the highway who was reclined back watching porn on the screen for the rear passengers

3

u/SickViking Aug 01 '25

The fact the truck keeps going and doesn't seem to be breaking actually makes me think this is a medical emergency situation, like a heart attack or seizure.

3

u/Quintus-Sertorius Aug 01 '25

Oh the truck definitely broke.

u/SATerp Jul 31 '25

You don't normally see someone speed up AFTER rear ending another car. I feel privileged.

3

u/HailMadScience Jul 31 '25

I noticed that too, lol.

3

u/truthful_whitefoot Aug 01 '25

Classic panicked pedal confusion, most likely

30

u/k_varnsen Jul 31 '25

My neck hurts just from watching the video.

4

u/Greg0692 Jul 31 '25

Mine too.

I NEED A LAWYER PLEASE

32

u/Obant Jul 31 '25

We really need to tackle the using your phone while driving problem. It's unacceptable how many innocent lives are being taken by idiots on their phones.

11

u/Randomfactoid42 Jul 31 '25

I agree but how?  Disabling the phone above a certain speed is impractical because most of also use the GPS navigation or passengers would want to use their phones.

Too many people refuse to moderate their behavior unless they are forced to do so. It’s always this “what can I get away with today” or “no cop; no stop” mentality.

7

u/Obant Jul 31 '25

Yeah, I don't know how, honestly. It's just getting scary to drive it's got so much worse in the past 5 years, at least in my area.

7

u/Darwins_Dog Aug 01 '25

The #1 priority for transportation safety groups should be self-driving cars. Humans sure aren't going to get better at driving anytime soon.

I think they're on the right track with alertness monitors that track eye movements and pre collision braking, but even in cars that have them most people will turn it off if given the option. Myself included to be honest.

4

u/azebod Aug 01 '25

Tbh it might've not even been a phone and that's the most outrageous part. Like I had to pull off the highway last week because of the extremely ironic issue of needing to be able to read the menus for my dash cam properly after accidentally bumping it into the wrong setting.

u/Heavy-Attorney-9054 Jul 31 '25

Good work by the car in front of you.

24

u/exoxe Jul 31 '25

"I'll never drive in an autonomous car, they're dangerous!" -this guy

10

u/SFishes12 Jul 31 '25

Doing something on their phone, for sure

9

u/BambooRollin Jul 31 '25

+1 for style.

Pretty dramatic fountain of garbage out of the box.

43

u/Odd_Tea_5067 Jul 31 '25

Doesn't look like he even hits the breaks at all.

49

u/Weary_Boat Jul 31 '25

Plenty of breaks, but no brakes

17

u/The_Livid_Witness Jul 31 '25

He was on Reddit

8

u/viperfangs92 Jul 31 '25

Nor did they try to use the shoulder

15

u/Danitoba94 Jul 31 '25

Guarantee you he was on his phone. Not looking at all what was up ahead.

Deserves the whole book thrown at him.

0

u/SickViking Aug 01 '25

Or having a medical emergency. Never hit the break even after the collision.

2

u/Aaaahhhhhhhh_ Jul 31 '25

Yea you can definitely see the front of the truck dip from braking right before it hits. Way too late though

4

u/TheSciences Aug 01 '25

I'm always worried about this sort of thing when I'm in traffic on a freeway that slows to a crawl.

4

u/DaveDL01 Jul 31 '25

That camera quality…

4

u/exoxe Jul 31 '25

It's probably from an older Tesla, my camera quality in my Model 3 is pretty craptacular but the newer cameras have a bit more resolution (1.2 megapixel vs 5 megapixel in the newer version 4 hardware).

2

u/strangelove4564 Jul 31 '25

1.2 megapixel... holy crap, that's 2006 cell phone camera quality.

2

u/rgpie75 Aug 01 '25

It’s from a 2026 Model Y.

2

u/exoxe Aug 01 '25

Okay, so just horrible compression somewhere along the way of getting it placed on Reddit, got it 😆

3

u/codguy231998409489 Jul 31 '25

Didn’t see it. Didnt hit the brakes at all..

Looks like the previous gen 3-series.

3

u/Honest_Table_75 Jul 31 '25

I feel so bad for the other guy. Getting hit by a pickup at that speed must have absolutely rocked them. Hope they're ok.

3

u/Veloster_Raptor Jul 31 '25

This shit happened to me. Didn't have a hard wire kit for my dash cam so it came unplugged from the force of the dude rear ending me. Nothing like looking in your rear view mirror and seeing a car fly into your ass just long enough to recognize what's going to happen, but not long enough to be able to react.

Luckily, I was completely sat back on my chair and wasn't tensed up, so I walked away with no injuries.

3

u/didiz88 Aug 01 '25

Land of trucks 🤢🤮

2

u/Trivi_13 Jul 31 '25

Pedal still mashed to the floor.

2

u/Tofino_Time Jul 31 '25

Distracted driving = attempted murder.

2

u/ryoga21 Jul 31 '25

I'd be willing to put money on the truck driver looking at their phone.

2

u/ClevetUserName Aug 01 '25

This guy was texting. Look at the skidmark on the highway- he didn't even hit the brakes until the instant before the collision.

3

u/Eastern_Cat8284 Jul 31 '25

Im going to guess a medical situation, seemed never to have let off the accelerator

7

u/mesovortex888 Jul 31 '25

Medical situation = cell phone addiction

2

u/Ka07iiC Jul 31 '25

That's what I think too. Being on your phone significantly reduces reaction time, but I think it's wild to not react at any instant before the collision (no brake lights), and then to still keep driving is more indication

3

u/Complete-Jicama891 Jul 31 '25

Brodozers gonna brodoze

1

u/wraith_majestic Jul 31 '25

Good news: the trucks airbags work!

1

u/JRVYukon79 Jul 31 '25

1 800 call sam lol

1

u/fatlegsauntpam Jul 31 '25

Morgan & Morgan are getting a call very soon.

1

u/S7482 Jul 31 '25

Dude had some follow through, I'll give him that.

1

u/dogbolter1 Jul 31 '25

not even a glimmer of brake lights

1

u/hendersonrich93 Jul 31 '25

Those left turns on the highway get you every time!

2

u/Large_Score6728 Aug 01 '25

His beer left the cooler

1

u/ImTheKey Aug 01 '25

I've seen something similar to this on i10 W Houston but my path wasn't obstructed so I kept going since I didn't have a dash cam and was on the way home after a long ass work day

1

u/Tesnevo 28d ago

Damn, zero braking…

1

u/Positive-Listen-1660 Jul 31 '25

Pickup. Shocker.

1

u/Extra-Presence3196 Jul 31 '25

I'm gonna guess....yet another pickup truck driver..or BMW/Audi hater.

1

u/GeotusBiden Jul 31 '25

Truck guys doing truck guy things.

1

u/dance-9880 Aug 01 '25

I need a tall truck so I can see what's ahead of me! /s

-1

u/Marqui_Fall93 Aug 01 '25

Let me guess. A pickup driver

-1

u/WarmPaleontologist20 28d ago

I wonder if that water came from a beer cooler in the truck bed. Sure hope the car occupants came through this ok.
