You don't normally see someone speed up AFTER rear ending another car. I feel privileged.

We really need to tackle the using your phone while driving problem. It's unacceptable how many innocent lives are being taken by idiots on their phones.

u/Randomfactoid42 Jul 31 '25
I agree but how? Disabling the phone above a certain speed is impractical because most of also use the GPS navigation or passengers would want to use their phones.
Too many people refuse to moderate their behavior unless they are forced to do so. It’s always this “what can I get away with today” or “no cop; no stop” mentality.

u/Obant Jul 31 '25
Yeah, I don't know how, honestly. It's just getting scary to drive it's got so much worse in the past 5 years, at least in my area.

The #1 priority for transportation safety groups should be self-driving cars. Humans sure aren't going to get better at driving anytime soon.

I think they're on the right track with alertness monitors that track eye movements and pre collision braking, but even in cars that have them most people will turn it off if given the option. Myself included to be honest.

Tbh it might've not even been a phone and that's the most outrageous part. Like I had to pull off the highway last week because of the extremely ironic issue of needing to be able to read the menus for my dash cam properly after accidentally bumping it into the wrong setting.

Doesn't look like he even hits the breaks at all.

Guarantee you he was on his phone. Not looking at all what was up ahead.
Deserves the whole book thrown at him.

Or having a medical emergency. Never hit the break even after the collision.

Yea you can definitely see the front of the truck dip from braking right before it hits. Way too late though

I'm always worried about this sort of thing when I'm in traffic on a freeway that slows to a crawl.

That camera quality…

u/exoxe Jul 31 '25
It's probably from an older Tesla, my camera quality in my Model 3 is pretty craptacular but the newer cameras have a bit more resolution (1.2 megapixel vs 5 megapixel in the newer version 4 hardware).

It’s from a 2026 Model Y.

I feel so bad for the other guy. Getting hit by a pickup at that speed must have absolutely rocked them. Hope they're ok.

This shit happened to me. Didn't have a hard wire kit for my dash cam so it came unplugged from the force of the dude rear ending me. Nothing like looking in your rear view mirror and seeing a car fly into your ass just long enough to recognize what's going to happen, but not long enough to be able to react.
Luckily, I was completely sat back on my chair and wasn't tensed up, so I walked away with no injuries.

This guy was texting. Look at the skidmark on the highway- he didn't even hit the brakes until the instant before the collision.

Im going to guess a medical situation, seemed never to have let off the accelerator

That's what I think too. Being on your phone significantly reduces reaction time, but I think it's wild to not react at any instant before the collision (no brake lights), and then to still keep driving is more indication

I've seen something similar to this on i10 W Houston but my path wasn't obstructed so I kept going since I didn't have a dash cam and was on the way home after a long ass work day

I wonder if that water came from a beer cooler in the truck bed. Sure hope the car occupants came through this ok.

I'll never understand people taking their eyes off the road when traveling at high speed.
