If prices are 30% of what they are in the US and your salary is 40% of what it is in the US that would make your life more affordable. People save a lot of money in China but they are also just more frugal than Americans.

Frugal?

There is literally a stereotype called the "Moonlight generation" that started in the 90s of people who would spend their entire paychecks before the end of the month...

Complete fantasy to pretend they don't worship consumerism as much as Americans.

I’m glad you’re well read but I’m currently in China. Consumerism is still big but people spend big on their major hobbies and run lean elsewhere. People are far more frugal, there’s not the credit card debt problem seen in America, and far less people live paycheck to paycheck. People highly prioritize saving money here. For older people they still remember a time where poverty was everywhere, and they seem to save out of fear. Young people seem to save because they know they need to save to raise a family. Malls are packed, but mostly with window shoppers. Let me know if you have any questions, I had very similar views before spending significant time here. It’s quite different than the US here but a great place.
