Mod Post readme: updates to the subreddit

In light of recent events, there's been a spike in the number people who have suddenly woken up from their slumber to realize that Google isn't as benevolent as they thought. So a degoogle-rush to this sub has started.

[surprised pikachu]

First of all, this is not a political subreddit. This is a technical subreddit to assist users in ~delousing~ removing Google from their devices.

You have opinions? Take them elsewhere.

News pertinent to Google and/or it's ancillary services/products will be allowed.

New rules will be added, old will be adjusted:

  1. No editorialization of submitted (news) articles.
  2. All political discussions will be removed.
  3. New posts will be checked for duplication, if a duplicate exists. It will be removed. (With guidance to the submitter to search the sub)

Info in the sidebar & wiki is being updated (thanks to everyone who helped!)

Last but not least, we'd like to welcome u/greenlit_hightower to the moderation team. Their knowledge and patient participation in this sub is a welcome addition. 🫡

Also a big thank you to everyone for helping this community to thrive. :)

Mod Post Does my phone have a DeGoogled rom? Megathread

In an effort to remove the countless low effort "Is there a DeGoogled rom for my phone?" questions we are requiring anyone creating those types of threads to post here with a reply instead of creating a post. Any posts going forward asking this question will be removed.

The reason we specified above "low effort" is because majority of the posts do not include what OP has researched, or tested, or tried (Thank you to those whom have included such information). Thus in order to help others answer your question, it is strongly encouraged to include the following: Failure to include these may result in you not getting your question answered. Experienced users can only help those DeGoogling if they have the proper information.

1) Your phone: Manufacturer, Model, Version or production details

2) What ROMs did you research?

3) Which ROMs did you install or attempt to install?

4) What problems have you encountered during the install?

5) What problems have you encountered after the install?

6) Why was the previous ROM insufficient to your needs? (If it was a DeGoogled ROM)

PS: Experienced DeGooglers, If you have any suggestions or modifications you believe should be made to this post guide, please reply here. Your experience is valuable and what keeps this sub alive :)

Discussion Google has become the worst company on the platform and I can prove it!

Post image
392 Upvotes

If you are wondering why Google is the worst company I will tell you about the reasons.

Number 01: It all started when Google bought YouTube and put everything in the rules of that platform and ended up ruining YouTube like Ads, Copyright Strikes, AI Translation Generator, You can't swear in the video and you can't even put music. And it's even worse on YouTube on Android phones, full of bugs like the like counter and 2-by-2 ads. They hid the dislike counter and COPPA from YouTube Kids on the Normal Platform with comments disabled. You can't save the playlist, and you can't even leave the mini player on and pause it alone because it's for kids. It's garbage and has become the most hated YouTube video platform in the world.

Number 02: Google Chrome is experiencing many performance issues on PCs and Android phones, crashing and displaying annoying messages. On PCs, it displays "Page Unresponsive," and on Android, the even more annoying message "Chrome Not Responding" appears. And on Google when you search to see the results and out of nowhere the Google Ai-Gemini overview generator appears the results, making it difficult for you to search on Google, this is a pain and very annoying, this Google Gemini AI gets in the way of your search on the platform and I hate it and mainly because it does not have security in the app browser and consumes a lot of RAM and storage on the PC and on the Android cell phone. This browser is causing a lot of crashes and lags on PC and Android. This is causing a headache for users who use this Google Chrome browser.

Number 03: When Google launched other apps like Google Photos, Gmail, Drive, and others, it was too good without having storage for your account, it was too good, but Google had to disappoint us. It launched the storage for apps that it put in Google Accounts with 15GB Storage, such as WhatsApp, Google Photos, Gmail, and Drive. This is because it changed the policy and was free. Now you have to pay for storage, this monopoly company's greed. But this is a trap. If you buy storage, such as Google Photos, Gmail, and Drive, they may end up disappearing your items, such as Google Photos, images, and Drive files. This may not be a good idea to buy storage from Google and Google One. I'm not going to give money to Google, nor will I store it because it's a scam. Google was inspired by EA, Rockstar Games, Ubisoft, Konami, Microsoft, and Nintendo. Google is evil, and the greed for money is this rotten company. Unfortunately, Google ruined the apps because of storage that wasn't available and was free when you create a Google account. And now apps with paid storage have ruined everything. Google Photos, Gmail, and Drive, when you create a Google account with 15GB of storage, became crap. So today's Google will screw itself, greedy evil monopoly. If your Google account storage is in the Google Gmail app, the message says you have to buy and pay for more storage on your Google account and apps, but it's not worth it because this is a huge scam. Buying Google storage deletes all items in Google apps. It's like it was pay-to-win in games, but instead of calling it pay-to-win, it's pay-to-storage.

Number 04: Google has become a monopoly of greed because of its annoying ads on YouTube, and worse on YouTube Premium, which is paid, but the worst part is that users can't afford YouTube Premium and prefer to use AdBlock on YouTube. YouTube and Google have banned the use of the platform's AdBlock on videos that appear in the pop-up screen on YouTube on PCs. This leaves users very frustrated and just want to keep using adblockers on YouTube so they don't see ads on YouTube on their PCs. And on Android phones, YouTube doesn't have the perfect adblock for cell phones. The YouTube app should also be available on Android phones, just like on PCs. However, there's the Brave browser for PCs, and on Android, it also blocks ads. You can download YouTube Revanced as an APK on Android. If you're tired of seeing so many annoying ads on YouTube, it's best to use AdBlock on your PC and on YouTube Revanced on your Android phone as well.

Unfortunately, Google has become a hated company for having a monopoly on greed and, not to mention, it destroyed incredible apps due to having app storage and a platform with ridiculous rules for videos on Google Photos, Gmail, Drive, and YouTube. Google is also hated for its Gemini AI search, which really messes up our search results. Google is evil, it doesn't even seem like the same company as it was before. I miss the old Google when it didn't have account and apps storage, and on YouTube without annoying and ridiculous rules.

Resource I built a free site to help people find Google alternatives , would love your feedback

Hi everyone,

Over the past few years I’ve been degoogling my life and realized it’s not always easy to find good alternatives. To make it easier, I collected the tools I use (and some I’ve discovered from this subreddit) into one place.

Some examples from the list:

Email: ProtonMail, Tuta

Messaging: Signal, Element

Cloud storage: Nextcloud, CryptPad

Other tools: GrapheneOS, Mullvad VPN, Bitwarden

I’d love to hear from you:

What tools am I missing?

Which ones do you personally recommend?

Do you think this could help people just starting to degoogle?

Thanks for reading, and I hope this helps others on their degoogle journey 🙏

Just started to degoogle and wanted to share my progress. Definitely a long way to go but I'm feeling optimistic about it. ~^

P.S. Ignore the goofy wallpaper glitch, it's because I took a scrolling screenshot.

Discussion Are there any plannings for search engine which detects and removes AI generated content from the search results?

That would be great.

P.S. By the way, I meant with the AI generated articles of the websites, not integrated AI of search engines...

Question Can Google still spy on me? What should I do next?

Post image

I used Canta to remove most of the recommended apps + dialer and SMS app, now I wonder should I stop at this or should remove more. I need personal safety because I live in an area with earthquake risk.

I also use brave as browser and futo keyboard

Sadly, banking apps from where I live refuse to work if they are not installed from Google Play Store. Not even Aurora Store can help me with this. So unfortunately, I had to keep Play Store. Also, switching from WhatsApp is close to impossible. My job requires it, my friends and familiy members use it, various businesses and services use it. So letting go of WhatsApp is definitely a no-no. Other than that, I have swapped everything else to their FOSS alternatives.

Linux phone

I recently saw the vid of a YouTuber called the Linux experiment on newpipe about a private smartphone that supports Degoogled Android and Ubuntu tutch,

the phone is called Volla Phone Quintus (Ubuntu Touch) have anyone tried it wanted some input in the vid he said it was good, but he tested the Android version. Im considering buying this phone in Ubuntu tutch. It's also suppose to support multi boot where you can have both de googled Android and Ubuntu tutch installed does that required Android or Ubuntu to be installed as main?

Question /e/os and Google Fi?

Upvotes

I'm about to install /e/os on my Pixel and looking forward to degoogle. With one exception: I'm traveling a lot and have not found a better international phone and mobile data provider than Google Fi, unfortunately. Any experience with Fi on /e/os? What are the implications?

Replacement Keyboard alternative to futo

Hi all, it's been a month since I degoogled my pixel. When I first started I tried both futo and helioboard, settling with futo however I've grown rather annoyed with futo with it constant typo issues double entering the start of words. I do like the clipboard function of futo and its generally okay however is there any alternatives that may provide a better experience while being open source?

Zohomail

Upvotes

Does it make any sense to pick Zohomail during the DeGoogle journey as a Email provider? (Paid plan)

What I like about it is the low cost and look of the interface, am though not sure how it looks in case of overall privacy.

Thw start of the slow grind to degoogle

I have been wanting to degoogle for a long time but I am very hooked in. So i will be taking this very slow, my 1st step was to stop using chrome, it might be a small step but I have now been using brave for a few months and although not everyones choice it is working for me. My phone will be next so i can change android image (something like grapheneos) Currently on an s21 but will get a pixel 10 (when they are supported)

Google maps - im using waze for driving and just installed magic earth

Gmail - been using it for over 22 years (app wise i use fairmail so most will be fine) Google photos - will look to self host - pay for extra storage Youtube - will need to keep (Currently pay premium), trying tubular YT Music - trying kreate the issue with these apps is that i struggle to play a lot of content when i have my vpn on. Dont really want to buy a load of nusic and self host. Google messenger RCS - .. Google auth - ... Google keep - .. Google calendar- ...

Non google apps (that seem to be included) Whatsapp - cant replace main messaging app in uk

Will be a slow grind, emails being the hardest

Up all night w/ scouring ebay & obsessing over disappearing Google Pixel Tablet offers at Best Buy. 128GB Pixel Tablet dropped in price lower than ebay used & open-box offers. After days of "Not Available at this location" boom New $249. 128GB Tab shows up, 25miles, 20 miles out. No I'm punchy off 0 sleep 5AM. Stores open at 10 & 11AM, only 2 at one location, none at my store. LOL Long of it, so excited about getting the tablet new for what Ebay was selling used! Passed out & up before the heat of day comes crashing down. Turn on the GPS on the phone, make it to the store after stopping at a restaurant to get a kid to make my gps talk driving directions at me. I got the one porcelain only new $249er. It was Christmas morning. I'm walking out with my first new tablet. All of a sudden I remember amidst all the anxiety about getting one of the few 249.ers I remembered crap there was alternative pricing for the newly priced 249. Light bulb 205. for an open-box. Hell with it, I didn't want my first tablet scratched up. LOL

At home I open the box & there is no way to power on my tablet...LOLOL Just a c - c Charging cable lolol Ok I'm happy for now lolol Another day for a charger, screen protector, case delivers thurs. My local best buy has whatever. My new quest is a charging dock. LOL Then to figure out how to install graphene OS At the end of life & tech is what I get a kick out of. LOL Hey anyone can recommend small hand held vacuum to clean out my blingout PC monsters? Couldn't make up my mind between a white & black case so now I have no room for my black & white builds
