Question Does anyone have a a disability called Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD)?

Hey there, the reason why I joined this group is because I want to meet other people who has Central Auditory Processing Disorder because I want to see their experience with it and I hope to understand more about my disability. Plus I don’t want to feel alone anymore. I also have adhd as well. And I am also open to meet people with other disability’s. Anyways cannot wait to meet you guys:)

I have auditory processing disorder, but not central apd because it’s absolutely tied to my ADHD.

Or so they thought. That was.. 18 years ago. Now I’ve lost >65-70% of my hearing and rely on aids and lip reading. So maybe it was neurodevelopmental, maybe it was physiological. Who knows?

It’s wild in conversations, though, to be like 15 seconds behind. Being hard-of-hearing actually covers this a lot. Folks just assume that’s why it took me so long to process what was said. Potato, po-tah-to

Oh shoot, I am sorry to hear that that you lost your hearing:( and yeah who knows for sure! And that’s interesting that it covers a lot. And yeah it does take long unfortunately from my understanding.

WAHOOOO!!! It’s so nice meeting you!!!! I am glad I can meet some people who has the same disability as me!!:)

I've met one person with it. My sister thinks she has it but has decided not to pursue a diagnosis

u/Coophatercommercial 11h ago

That’s interesting that you met one person with it! And that’s totally understandable for your sister. How rare is this disability anyways?

u/So_Southern 11h ago

I have no idea how rare we are. I know it's something that was only discovered (I'm not sure if that's the correct word but can't think of another way to describe it) in the 2000s

u/aqqalachia 6h ago edited 5h ago

i think we are pretty rare. OP is the first person i've ever met with it, irl or in-person, outside of the subreddit for it here. i've never met another irl.

it's a last-order dx. if anything else can explain the issue, they go with that dx. it's not something you can really self-diagnose.

It is the correct word my friend:) but I understand why you were overthinking there!! But that’s honestly interesting tho it was discovered in the 2000s! Ngl, I don’t fully understand our disability but I am still learning it!!:)

I don’t have CAPD but I do have APD ‘c it’s a nightmare sometimes especially when I’m in a busy place. I was diagnosed with it earlier this year

u/Coophatercommercial 6h ago

I agree with you, it is sometimes a nightmare unfortunately because when I’m in a loud place, I can legit hear everything. What’s the difference for CAPD and APD??

u/Livid-Lizard7988 6h ago

I either hear absolutely everything and need to have my ear defenders on or absolutely nothing at all. I mainly lip read when it’s hard to hear anything. I’m not too sure, I haven’t actually heard of CAPD and the only thing I can find is about APD - are they the same but medically named different?

u/IStillListenToRadio 6h ago

Judging from the Wikipedia article, they seem the same thing.

u/Coophatercommercial 6h ago

Well thank you so much for letting us know:)

u/Coophatercommercial 6h ago

Dang, that’s honestly interesting tbh. And I never knew ear defenders were a thing😅 and how do you lip read? I really can’t lip read yet but doing my best to! My guess they are the same but named differently. I wonder if there is a difference if it is two different disabilities

u/Livid-Lizard7988 6h ago

Yeah! I’ve used them for years due to sensory issues and meltdowns

I started by sitting in front of a mirror and saying words slowly then a bit faster to learn the movement of the mouth for said words. Took a long time to get to grips with other people’s talking speed but I can pick up on certain words via their movement and sort of piece together what’s being said

u/Coophatercommercial 6h ago

That is really interesting! I will have to give it a try and learn on how to lip read! I honestly never thought of it!:)

u/Livid-Lizard7988 6h ago

Because of how my memory is etc I only was able to learn the very basics of word movement but it’s enough for me to get away with

I hope it helps you ☺️

u/Coophatercommercial 6h ago

That is super interesting! I will definitely try this and learn. Thank you so much 😊

Yes, I have it from a serious head injury. diagnosed with I was like 12.

I find that people conflate it with "I have difficulties processing words because of ADHD or autism" and it is very different from that so its rather lonely.

its part learning disability and part hearing disorder.

u/Coophatercommercial 6h ago

That’s really interesting in a way honestly. I never thought you can get it from head injury. May I ask how you got it? Like how did your head injury happen? You can share if your comfortable:) and honestly on what you just said, I 100% agree with you!

i was likely shot with a grazing blow, but no one is very sure. i've had a very insane life. my family did not seek medical care, but did take me to the doctor when i stopped being able to understand them very well over the next year.

u/Coophatercommercial 6h ago

Oh no, I am sorry on what you went through:( I hope things will get better for you soon:(

Really?! That’s so interesting!! It’s really nice to meet you😁

Highly suspected a few years ago by my neurologist and audiologist, never actually diagnosed though. It's gotten a bit worse since my stroke, sadly.

I'd be curious if there's any connection between it and visual snow, which I also have (and yes, it's also gotten worse).

u/Coophatercommercial 6h ago

Oh no I am sorry to hear that:( I hope everything is okay now. And may I ask what you mean about visual snow?

u/IStillListenToRadio 6h ago

Wikipedia article. Basically, I have a permanent layer of TV static overlaying my vision. You learn to ignore it, but it gets distracting sometimes.

u/Coophatercommercial 6h ago

Ohhh that makes more sense now! But that sucks that you got that as well:( I hope things get better eventually for you!

ohhh!! Is that another word for auditory processing disorder?  I read there are a few different terms for it.

They thought i might have had this in Pre K already!.  Im 40 yrs old now lol.

Was diagnosed with ADHD and a learning disability but thats all.

The symptom of APD is always misinterpreting what you say,      Oh!! Another thing is not being able to focus or concentrate when other noises are going on around you, crowded noisy places give me anxiety, so i dont like noisy evironments much cuz of that. Ex, food courts, concerts etc..but its totally fine cuz im introverted anyways.

All my life i just thought this was a symptom of my ADHD!. But apparently not! So im totally suspecting i do have APD..and i want to he diagnosed , dammit lol and I suspect i may have so many other things too. Ive suffereerd with anxiety and depression almost since i was a teen.  Anyways i see symptoms of APD in my mom and oma , both are elderly age. My mom can go on a whole conversation about something, but i didnt say thst at all, i said something else entirely.

Everyone has been diagnosed with just adhd so far In my family, and some of us are literally either hyperactive in our thoughs or physically hyperactive, scatterbrained.        I dont doubt my adhd is wrong, i just think i have multiple diagnoses on top of my ADHD.

u/Coophatercommercial 1h ago

That’s so interesting!!! And I am not to sure, it probably is another word for apd!:) it’s nice meeting you!

u/HelenAngel 4h ago

I’m AuDHD & have auditory processing issues because of it. Welcome! We’re pretty friendly here.

u/Coophatercommercial 1h ago

Well hello there! Thank you for welcoming me! Thats interesting! Is AuDHD Autism and ADHD mixed together??

u/Worrywart4564 2h ago

Yes I do I wear hearing aids for it, I am my audiologist first Auditory processing disorder PT being treated with hearing aids

u/Coophatercommercial 1h ago

Wait. Hearing aids?! That actually works?! I never knew that honestly!! What kind of hearing aids is it?

u/Worrywart4564 1h ago

Yes, helps make people's voices louder so it sounds clearer, they are phonak, have a little microphone that goes in the ear and a piece that goes behind the ear it's connected to my phone by an app so I can adjust the settings, my assessor recommended that course of treatment

u/Coophatercommercial 1h ago

That’s so interesting!! I will have to check it out!!
