Allergic to Taxol?
Anyone allergic to taxol? My mom had a horrible hypersensitivity reaction at her first round. After pain meds, fluids, steroids, benadryl, and oxygen they started it back up slowly and she was able to complete it. Yesterday was round 2. She got premeds and they started the taxol slow but she still reacted again. They declared her allergic, only gave her the carbo, and said they will start an alternative for the taxol next round.
From what I have read it seems the replacement will either be Abraxane or Taxotere. Anyone have any experience with this?

My reaction to Taxol was terrible for me, burning joint pain all over my body but it was not considered as allergic. I could only endure for 4 treatments, after that i just had the carboplatin. It is good that there are other options out there as folks have already mentioned. Best wishes for your Mom.

how were your side effects with carbo only compared to the rounds of having carbo and taxol?

I understood that chemo was challenging but with Taxol it was horrible x ten, but carboplatin was just normal terrible if that makes sense :). It was the average side effects of moderate joint pain, nausea, fatigue etc but manageable with meds.

I have heard Abraxane is much more tolerable. Unfortunately, it's more expensive, so they have to give you taxol first and if you react, then, they can justify the abraxane/taxotere so insurance will cover it.

I also had alergic reaction. 3 times. The second time was really bad. The 3rd time I told the nurses as soon as I felt off so they quickly stopped my chemo and gave me ant-alergy suff so it wasn't that bad. Slowing down chemo didn't help me at all. For my 4th chemo my oncologist gave me some pills to take the day before and after that I was fine. The pills are called Dexamethasone and are for treating severe alergical reaction. Ask the oncologist about it, maybe it'll help.

one thing to know about dexamethasone is that it's a pretty strong steroid. some people have reactions to it as well and it comes with its own set of challenging side effects including insomnia and notable hunger & weight gain.

yeah, they gave her the steroid pills to take the day before chemo for both rounds and unfortunately she still reacted. thanks though! glad it worked for you!

I had severe reactions to paxataxol so they switched me to docetaxol with Benadryl and steroids and I had only minor reactions.

This is my scenario too. After the 2nd failed treatment (in which all the nurses had to come into stabilize me) I told the doctor I wasn't willing to do pacitaxol. So they wanted to try abraxane but my insurance wouldn't cover it so we went with docetaxol which I tolerated the treatment

I see that dexamethasone 20mg and phenergan were given to me IV at my first infusion time to counter any reaction - all went well. Had to follow 8mg each day, days 2 and 3. All the best :)

I to reacted to Taxal, and I did IPT treatments only which is only 5% chemo. Horrible chest pressure, flushing, and super sharp jabbing in my back. My nurses were great and with in the first 30 seconds or less the fed the Benadryl in the line and it subsided immensely. A week later got the 5% Insulin potentiation treatment this time with the Carboplatin and did fine for my five treatments. treatment. It’s quite scary for my first time, and made me question the CP

Im allergic to taxol and I'm getting my 5th infusion of abraxane tomorrow. It's only a thirty minute infusion and I've had no reactions to it so far.
