Has Europe or the world always been this insane with votes or is this a recent thing?

Asking this as a European myself but i feel for most of the 19th century politicans were usually at least outwardly..."proper" if that makes sense?

Like not counting in Hitler

But why does it in general take the form of seeming mental retardation and weird candidates?

They all have some weird belief or shady background

Weird belief goes hand in hand with far right nationalism.

Also a lot of these types bank on not being part of the establishment, standing clearly apart from them in their oddity seems to be part of the strategy.

Being a "Bloke you can have a beer with at the pub" is another one and it seems to weigh well above qualifications, diplomatic ability and fitness for the office
