It's winter right now in the southern hemisphere while in Europe is almost peak summer :)

11 only feels cold because your houses are built so poorly in Australia.

I think I have a tent with more insulation.

If you lived through the summer you’d understand why the houses need to be that way. 40°c, imagine, 40°c

Ackshually...

Insulation works both ways. It's been proven in really hot climates as well as truly cold climates. If you don't have AC, you're not supposed to let the heat in during summer as you don't let the cold in during winter. You're supposed to turn the ventilation to minimum and open the windows only at night when it's the coolest outside. No "keeping the balcony door open" business. Outside blinds, shutters or special window film works wonders and you've created a cave.

The problem is that modern buildings tend to have enormous windows to let the light in. We use triple glazing here and it works wonders (older houses still have double glazing, but are upgrading as well), but it's no match to the walls with 25 cm insulation and roofs with 40 cm insulation.

I've lived in similar apartements both facing south. One had double glazed windows and wasn't additionally renovated and insulated, the other was recently renovated and updated to triple glazed windows. The first one was hell in summer, the second got warm, but I didn't have to spend my summers cooling off at supermarkets' ice cream isles. Again - the trick is to not let the heat in ;)
