Doesn't look so, does it?

Muscovites are widely with Putin, Western cities of Kaliningrad & St Petersburg too I’d speculate.. but east of the Urals? Not so much.

Even east of the Urals. I've a friend in Ulan-Ude (Buryat republic). Even though a disproportionally large number of the war dead are from that region, Putin remains popular.

The power of propaganda huh?

It's a bit more complex than that. There's a lot of cynicism, and hopelessness that things can become better.

That’s an outcome of 3 decades of propaganda, isn’t it?

No, centuries of imperialism and colonialism, in which the last 30 years play a part, but just one part. The whole country needs therapy, really. I don't really think outsiders can understand the situation unless they've immersed in the community for quite some time.

I just mentioned the centuries of authoritarian rule an hour ago.. I fully agree with your statement & sentiment. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel the world & get a broader perspective than most. Including a year in China. The situation there is a different facet to a similar chain of authoritarian regimes, and the odd brutal revolution, massive genocides & erasures.

I think the world would be a much better place if people had the ability to travel and understand each other. As it is, we live through stereotypes.

Travel is a wonderful education, it’s true.. a Privilege that’s not really as available as it used to be. It’s a different world than the one I grew up in, e.g. internet & starlink is now an existential threat to some remote societies.. and like Ai, it’s not as helpful as the proponents claim.

There are many analogies we can use, but we’re not as evolved as most of us would like to think. Stone Age brains in a very complex & confused world.
