applying rules that were made by the most dedicated crazy people in a time where being in debt could mean seeing your entire family taken as slaves and violent deaths were basically a daily occurence somehow causes issues in our vastly different modern societies. nostalgia of a time that never was is the bane of humanity and condemn us to repeat the same mistakes over and over until we are powerful enough to make one mistake the last

It's a bit deeper than that. Yes, assholes are assholes.

With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil - that takes religion.

Religion has a knack for justifying oppression, violence and hatred, instilling those behaviors in otherwise decent people. I don't think only religion can do that, but it is definitely a major factor. After all, you have the certainty that you are on gods divine and just side, so what you and your peers do must be good, everyone else is just an evil sinner. Similar constructs are in place for other religions as well.

But I suspect part is also that there are indeed a lot of assholes out there regardless.
