Pretty wild we made this 650 years ago while some newly build homes in the western world are still tornado bait. I'm looking at you America.

What do you mean matchstick houses shouldn't be built in a place dubbed "Tornado Alley"?

650 years? New Grange, in Ireland, is built around 3100BC, older than the pyramids and stone henge and is so accurately built that the rising sun on the winter solstice shines through a specifically built roof box.

I feel this just underscore my point. Pretty amazing actually. We build to last. Newer stuff is a bit more flimsy, but still leagues apart from the tree forts they put up in America.

Yeah, that was my aim.

Do you know what percentage of people's incomes, public funds or even GDP went into such medieval construction projects? The cost was absolutely massive relatively speaking.

I dunno, much probably. But my small house are pretty cheap and still built with brick and mortar, inside out, all the way through. In America it is just sticks with cardboard painted with a brick pattern. I never understood that.

Taking 16 years just to finish the dome? Well, that's still faster than my WiFi trying to load a 4K video.

I climbed the dome to the cupola December, 2005. I had been solo travelling in Italy for a month at that point so I was gassed by the time I made it to the top....so worth it. Cold out, but I was sweating lol.

One of the most majestic buildings I’ve ever seen👌

Didn't they quarrel for  years afterwards or before on the design of the thing on top of the dome?

I seem to remember that from an art book.
