⏪️ Throwback Thursday Daz Sampson - Teenage Life (UK 2006)

https://youtu.be/OYgE7O0OLyw?si=hrgs4oeS_R0HDEL3

19th - 25 points. Daz won the UK NF of this year ‘Making Your Mind Up’ with 121 points beating Anthony Costa who had 96 points ‘It’s a Beautiful Thing’. Kym Marsh who is a known actor in the UK was fourth ‘whisper to me’. The supporting performers that joined Daz Sampson for the performance were Ashlee, Emily Reed, Gabriella, Holly and Leeanne Simister. Emily Reed was the runner up to the infamous Gemini who got the UK the first nil points after a horrible performance in 2003. She was a replacement for a dancer called Jessica who was in the original dancers from the UK as she was sixteen & BBC decided to pull her from the show due to licensing rules as the other dancers were old enough. Daz still bought Jessica a ticket to Greece to experience Eurovision as shown in his documentary on his journey with Eurovision.

This was the one of the better entries in the UK’s dark era in the 2000’s.

Never forget that he tried to go back to Eurovision in 2019 with a song about boots...

...for Belarus.

This song has never stopped being in my head since Garg mentioned it and I'm seriously starting to think I might need psychiaitral help

u/FBrandt 4d ago

May our paths never cross with this song again

u/ninjamullet 4d ago

Strong David Brent vibes there somehow.

I reckon a ESC Gabe watcher

ESC Gabe ruining Germany 2022 for me because it apparently has the same chord progression as this 😭🙏

2

u/justk4y Strobe Lights 3d ago

Not just boots…… they were KINKY BOOTS.

1

u/eunrovision 3d ago

He also attempted to be internally selected for Belarus in 2021 too

we can measure any point in history as 'before daz sampson teenage life' and 'after daz sampson teenage life'. truly iconic

His documentary is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. He was really really convinced he was doing something new and would win.

I loved this song but the documentary is hilarious with the levels of delusion

What. The. Hell. Just. Happened?

No clue but I liked it

Why traumatise us like this on a Thursday?

11

u/LeoLH1994 Chains On You 4d ago

The guy who gave us lots of weird rap covers whilst also being a DJ, and helped by the guy behind the legendary Congoscenti vs Intelligentsia

2

u/notaflopbitch Zjerm 4d ago

The UK should just send Spray to Eurovision tbh

u/caesarsauceembolism 4d ago

Uses the Pachelbel Canon chord sequence, as does the old Soviet national anthem.

Meaning you can sing the words to Teenage Life anytime you hear it.

Or vice versa.

Don't hate me but I like it hahahaha

21

u/alfazenntowri 4d ago

It's awesome. The rap part is meh at best, but the girls' chorus is just so nostalgic.

7

u/aceofmufc Róa 4d ago

Yeah the rapping sucks but the chorus just hits like 💎🔥

Super memorable and super catchy

3

u/swfcb 4d ago

The chorus really has Toy Solider vibes.

1

u/Neorago Róa 4d ago

I loved it too

1

u/Gayandfluffy Rise Like a Phoenix 3d ago

13 year old me loved it. Although now later on I realize it's probably mostly because I had crushes on the dancers

7

u/broccolibubblebath 4d ago

This was my guilty pleasure song and I'm still guilty about it.

7

u/reichya Bird of Pray 4d ago

I legit loved this song at the time, and it holds up surprisingly well. 😆

7

u/nicheencyclopedia 4d ago

God dammit the song got stuck in my head from simply looking at this post 😂

Edit: WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS WON A NATIONAL FINAL???

8

u/TheFlyingHornet1881 3d ago

Well wait until you realise UK 2007 was a national final winner too. Somehow the BBC decided national finals were a bit dubious after that.

5

u/nicheencyclopedia 3d ago

I did actually know about that one. I remember one of the hosts announced the wrong winner… oops

24

u/DeathByOrangeJulius 4d ago

Hate it all you want, but it is catchy and nostalgic as hell. Very 2006 coded lol

1

u/past__nastification Volevo Essere Un Duro 3d ago

Yeah I kind of dig it

u/Shronkster_ Milkshake Man 2d ago

Was legit my favourite song growing up, had it on cd single at the time

It helps that he's from the same place as me so my family liked it for purely selfish reasons

u/Dazzling_Cry6466 4d ago

Only word word is needed to describe this performance: CREEPY

7

u/EuanBCFC That Sounds Good to Me 3d ago

Possibly the strangest ESC/Bhutan link… Daz was (supposedly) meant to manage a football team over there but couldn’t because of COVID!

7

u/CriticalAlpaca TANZEN! 3d ago

The Daz Sampson Lore just keeps getting richer.

2

u/justk4y Strobe Lights 3d ago

He also played and managed for a team in Guam, and apparently managed some decent amateur/semi pro teams in England and Poland as well

Oh yeah, and he apparently actually played for Manchester City in his youth, before heading to decent level Stockport County’s youth, where he had to end his high-level football dreams due to an accident….. from what I could find

Also, the reason why he’s being abroad so much is likely because of his performance at ESC soooooo 😬 like Alex from Electro Velvet (who apparently is in this subreddit) said: Maybe they’re all hiding together on an island at Jemini’s shack?

2

u/justk4y Strobe Lights 3d ago

The Bhutanese broadcasting company: “The strangest ESC/Bhutan link….. SO FAR……”

5

u/Adam-Miller-02 4d ago

No wonder they call Daz the “British Mozart”

3

u/DerwentPencilMuseum Tavo Akys 4d ago

One of my dad's favourite songs haha it makes him nostalgic for his school days

4

u/jakeyboy723 What The Hell Just Happened? 3d ago

There's over a thousand songs you can throw back to. Why this one? So many songs were better in that National Final. Anthony Costa would have been tolerable and Kym Marsh would have been fine. None would have gotten much better but that's about the quality of that National Final.

u/ZaraAqua Bara bada bastu 4d ago

Still got more televote points than the three most recent entries heheeeee

7

u/notaflopbitch Zjerm 4d ago

Atrocious but in the top half of UK entries of its decade.

5

u/OhmMeGag 4d ago

Im honestly not even sure about that. Especially the start of the decade was still a good time for the UK, and while the result of 2008 was bad, its actually pretty decent

5

u/Lisbian Nocturne 4d ago

The lowest of bars.

5

u/Brit-Crit 4d ago

The concept was solid and the chorus is actually pretty decent, but this song needed a serious rapper, not a guy who made his living doing school-disco rap covers of 70s/80s standards…

2

u/PoetryAnnual74 Euphoria 4d ago

This and Bosnia & Herzegovina 2006 were the only songs from 2006 I had on my MP3 player in 2006.. 😅

2

u/PieScout 4d ago

No lie this is like a pure vision of British culture, which is why I think many have such weird feelings about it (Plus there's women dressed as school girls??). It reminds me of my time in assembly in primary school being forced to sing silly songs about obeying rules and cleaning and being nice. Its just so niche and badly planned out.

2

u/Balcke_ 4d ago

I couldn't stop thinking if they choose the dancers's costumes from a shop as "Halloween naughty schoolgirl costume"

2

u/RPark_International 3d ago

Always hated this, and I was 16 at the time! Really wished they’d turned it away.

I distinctly remember Jonathan Ross was a panellist at the NF, and he described it as so wrong it’s right (implying Daz looks like a nonce)

2

u/Domonoadamu 3d ago

Daz is one of the biggest segways I had to Eurovision coming from a Dance Dance Revolution fanatic.

2

u/Nightnightgun Bara bada bastu 4d ago

Matilda the Musical was written by Kelly/Minchin when????

1

u/Hot_Guard7840 4d ago

Yes this is so particularly English in so many ways. And that's not a bad thing. Considering the heavy televote hitters in the same part of the draw, and how damn regional it is, it did alright.

1

u/JJVM99 4d ago

One of the funniest eurovision entries so therefore one of the best guilty pleasure songs. So many things wrong that make it hilarious. One hilarious detail for me is that he was not aware of how creepy he looked dressed like someone who would sell drugs in a corner while also surrounding himself with dancers dressed like schoolgirls yet the song still includes a police siren which makes you think the police are on their way to arrest him. You would assume he would subconsciously notice due to that before the contest.

1

u/mawnck 4d ago

I unironically love this song. Selah.

1

u/toryn0 Planet of Blue 4d ago

i know its bad but its the good kind of bad you know? the one that turns around and becomes good (same for uk2003 tbh)

like the base concept (rap verses and a choir in the chorus) is great, the rap could be better and by a lot - but i like the chorus and 2006 isnt exactly a great year so its still in my top 8

1

u/Admirable-Article374 Love Shine a Light 3d ago

this is unironically one of my favourite esc songs of all time

1

u/CFDyce Bird of Pray 3d ago

I actually like a lot of our entries from around that time, (Touch My Fire, Even If, Hold On To Our Love) but this is just cringe and awful… sorry.

1

u/justk4y Strobe Lights 3d ago

Overhated asf, yes it’s cringe, yes Daz the teacher gives off weird vibes (even he admitted that some performance choices weren’t the smartest 😅), but dang it’s catchy, silly, a bit camp and it hits a wire of nostalgia I didn’t know I had…… ESC guilty pleasure anyone???

1

u/vaffanchulo Gaja 3d ago

This song is my guilty pleasure ngl

1

u/skyguy2002 Doomsday Blue 3d ago

Saw "UK" next to "2006" and instantly recoiled

1

u/Jean-Paul_van_Sartre 3d ago

His documentary from that year is one of the funniest things I've seen

https://youtu.be/Uko7Rfgu4Xw

1

u/MikeMoritz_Writer Snap 2d ago

This truly was one of the songs of all time.

1

u/Ulu5578 19h ago

Subjectively this one of the worst Eurovision songs I know.

Objectively it is incredibly creepy, I understand (but disagree) when people say it’s catchy. But people saying they like it or that it’s a guilty pleasure? Not all thoughts need to be shared I’m sorry

0

u/Electrical-Time6497 What The Hell Just Happened? 2d ago

Honestly really creeps me out every time I see it, really embarrassed that we sent this (the fact it was my birth year’s entry too…)

Dima Bilan should win that year. Not Lordi freaks...
