Jokes aside, I think that Gabe mentioned that he wanted to go to Söngvakeppnin next year, so he might actually be there in person.

They have some tourdates in early 2026 and I really hope they won't coincide with the NF. It would be pretty disappointing to not have them back for an interval/opening act and to hand out the trophy to the next person.

Or maybe they are doing a Bhutan and celebrating a NF for nothing

Please select Birgo! She needs her revenge after her big rob of Söngvakeppnin 2025

Maybe with a better song this time

Are you serious?! Her song was amazing both in icelandic and english and she sang really good and beautiful live, her song was my personal winner together with VÆB, how she didn't qualify when her song was one million times better then Ágúst's song i will never truly understand, his song was the definition of the words generic and boring

u/ToxxinGamer Tavo Akys 2d ago

People have different tastes. I found her song as generic as the one you said. It has a derivative chord sequence, typical vocal melodies in the chorus and uninteresting style and progression, that doesn’t evolve. Good vocals doesn’t make something good and the excessive auto tune on the studio version gives me the ick. But you clearly love all those things in a song which is your opinion and valid.

I feel like people got attached to this song and overhyped it so much, because Söngvakeppnin was weaker this year and there wasn't much to root for. It stood out among the competition, but it wasn't that strong of an entry. I'm 90% sure it wouldn't have qualified if it was picked instead.

Maybe they were reassured about Israel not participating or at least the broadcaster having the possibility to vote on the matter?

16

u/ohwowthen 2d ago

Hun, that's not the case. They never wanted to withdraw, they just wanted you to like them.

The call for withdrawal is real. Eurovision is watched by almost everyone (of course some are indifferent or actively dislike it) but a large section of the population is not watching Eurovision because Israel competes.

This extends beyond Eurovision. There were also calls for the Icelandic basketball team to refuse to compete with Israeli team recently but they did compete and lost. An Israeli AI specialist was also prevented from presenting a talk due to a protest.

In general Icelanders are well aware of the horror that goes on in Gaza (and the injustice in the West Bank) and a large section of the population wants a boycott and other diplomatic actions to put pressure on Israel. The government has been critical of Israels actions but has taken limited actions (Iceland did recognize Palestine in 2011 though and the government supports UNRWA). Another section of the population is pro Israel or is hesident about further action.

Personally I think we should not compete in 2026 if Israel competes. What has gone on in Gaza this year is horrible to say the least. We can just have our local Söngvakeppni. Its one of the biggest television event of the year. I do hope they change the format of Söngvakeppnin though, they draw things out so much.

Large section? I’m pretty sure it was reported that this year’s or last year’s Eurovision was the most watched.

3

u/olvirki 2d ago edited 2d ago

Alot of people around me are boycotting Eurovision (I watched Eurovision last year though).

Edit: Are you talking about this news article? That is the global views, not the Icelandic ones. But if you have data about views in Iceland I am interested in seeing it. I just have ancecdotal evidence.

u/MinusOneThirteenth Think About Things 2d ago

Maybe this year… in 2024 there was a real chance of them not participating. And come on, everybody already likes Iceland!

0

u/ohwowthen 2d ago

"there was a real chance of them not participating"

How did that "real chance" materialize exactly? Cause I watched a full scale national final and then a Eurovision participation. So I'm confused.

u/MinusOneThirteenth Think About Things 2d ago

Admittedly going off of second-hand knowledge (ESC Gabe video), the winner of Söngvakeppnin had been given the choice of whether to make Iceland participate in Eurovision.
