tbf they were headed that way anyway, until the Unit-04 incident got followed up on by trauma after trauma, and they didn't really have time to try to get freaky any more.

At least IIRC it's been ages since I've watched the series.

Didn't even need to go that far. If either Asuka or Shinji had just been honest about their feelings for 1 minute this could have happened.
