Other ELI5: Monthly Current Events Megathread
Hi Everyone,
This is your monthly megathread for current/ongoing events. We recognize there is a lot of interest in objective explanations to ongoing events so we have created this space to allow those types of questions.
Please ask your question as top level comments (replies to the post) for others to reply to. The rules are still in effect, so no politics, no soapboxing, no medical advice, etc. We will ban users who use this space to make political, bigoted, or otherwise inflammatory points rather than objective topics/explanations.

Biology ELI5: Can you “work off” caffeine
I drank a C4 before i did a short 30 minute workout today and I can’t sleep. is there an amount of exercise you can do to make the caffeine like. be used up by your muscles or something so I get tired and sleep? if not how is this a good pre workout ? recovery is the most important part your muscles heal in their sleep . no sleep equals minimal gains.

Physics ELI5 where does the energy come from when a (non electric) magnet lifts a pin off the ground gravity pulls things down and it takes energy to lift something up does the energy come from the magnet if so will it eventually become demagnetized?

Biology ELI5: Why do babies and toddlers learn so quickly?
Why do babies and young kids seem to pick up new things way faster than adults? For example, they can learn languages and skills at the same time without much struggle. What’s the actual scientific reason behind this?
My guess is that their brains are more “flexible” or wired differently when they’re young, but I don’t really know what that means in scientific terms.

Biology ELI5: The sun’s UV rays can kill bacteria. But once they’re dead, do their tiny bodies just stay there, or do they disappear somehow?

Other ELI5: Why TikTok/Instagram videos don't need releases like in TV?
In television, producers need appearance releases to show people's faces/names/likeness - even if filmed in a public space.
My understanding is that's because film+television are for commercial use and is made to generate revenue...but nowadays content creators are making money off of their content - is that not commercial use? do they not have a "personal brand" that they are generating revenue for?
I don't understand why the world is a content creator's playground for generating their own revenue, but those rules are different for film and tv. What's the difference?

Biology ELI5: Why is it that certain foods start tasting different as we grow older or our bodies start reacting to them differently?
So to be exact, I’ve realized that recently as someone in their early 20s that I’ve developed less of a craving for certain foods like I used to. I’m talking about processed food that I’ll binge eat in my childhood and teens like snickers, m&ms, lifesavers gummies, Burger King etc. Recently the past 7 months, I’ve been running atleast 3 times a week, exercising for atleast 30 minutes a week, etc. I’ll have the craving for something sweet every now and then, but even when I do start eating it, I realize that I start feeling lethargic. I know a part of it could be in relation to our metabolism slowing down as we age. I just wanted to pin point the exact science behind it or know if it’s a natural phenomenon within a lot of other people. Living in the U.S where processed food is super convenient and common, obesity being on the rise and all, what makes us crave certain foods less and want to draw more toward either limiting them, or eating healthier.

Other ELI5 in a world where we have so many different languages, calendars, measuring systems, how are we able to all agree on time?
Like the title suggests. The world seems to agree on what time it is no matter what country or hemisphere you are in based on universal coordinates time (UTC) and how long we should decide seconds, minutes, and hours. Yet the world has all these different calendars (Chinese, Hebrew, etc), languages set by each country (in general), and other forms of measuring systems that do not involve time (weight, distance, volume).
Why are we all able to agree in units of time?

Engineering ELI5- battery powered lamp turns on with my light switch?
Hey guys!
I just moved into my dorm, and I brought a little battery-powered lamp with me. It is in NO WAY connected to the electrical circuit. I've had this lamp forever, and it has never done this with any other dorm room or my room at home.
But now in this new room, every time I turn the light switch on or off, the lamp turns on with it! I have two light switches, one for my main room and one for a light above my dresser, and both make the lamp turn on/off.

Biology ELI5 - What is behind/causes a "mental block." Is there even an explanation behind it?
I'm trying to learn a backflip, but why is my mental block powerful enough from stopping my ability to do it. And why do people with experience, like gymnasts or authors, suddenly get mental blocks preventing them from doing things they've done forever?

Physics ELI5: Why does gravity affect time?
We have two 30 minute basketball games being played.
One game is being played near a black hole while the other game is being played back on earth. Assuming identical games,
All of the participants playing feel the same amount of time locally but WHY do the games finish at different times?
"For the basketball players near the black hole, time feels normal to them locally because everything in their frame of reference (clocks, heartbeats, thoughts) is equally affected. It is only when comparing to an outside observer that the difference becomes apparent"
Why does this happen?? No matter how many times I try to wrap my head around this I can't understand it

Biology ELI5: How does body ‘know’ to react to emotions versus conscious thoughts?
For example:
I consciously want to pick up a pencil before picking up the pencil versus crying before I know why I’m crying.
Some other examples. - A person reacting to sudden news/trauma and cries before consciously thinking they want to cry. Like getting hit by someone or a loved one dies
- A women wanting to get pregnant experiences pregnancy symptoms without actual pregnancy (I forgot the term for this condition)
Like, how does my body know to cry before I know I want to cry? It’s as if a message to my brain is intercepted and got sent early to the body.

Physics ELI5 How does reinforced thread help ski jumpers?
Two Norwegian ski jumpers have been suspended for having "cheat" suits for a ski jump competition. I expected to see something about aerodynamic modifications, but they were accused of using "reinforced thread" in their jump suits. Huh? How does this give an advantage?

Technology ELI5 How do airport staff know what to look for when looking for explosives and drugs.
I just read an article that in 2016, a Daallo Airlines flight from Mogadishu was targeted when a bomber detonated an explosive hidden in a laptop. The blast tore a hole in the fuselage, ejecting the bomber midair at 11,000 feet, making him the only fatality. The crew safely landed the plane, saving all other passengers. Interesting story, however, I couldn’t help but wonder, how he was able to get his laptop past security and X-Ray scanners when there was explosives in there.

Chemistry ELI5: How Are Pills Made?
I don't mean gel caps. Like aspirin- how do they make what appears to be a pulverized compound, a powder, adhere into a solid shape? Thank you!

Biology ELI5: Ototoxicity of SSRIs
This is a documented side effect of several of these medications: hearing loss and tinnitus. How do these medications exacerbate this, and do they effectively also make it easier to go deaf to loud noise? Could these or any other meds theoretically lower the threshold for amplitude and duration, to the point where a person has to really worry about even moderately loud sounds? Can a psych med taker be more prone to deafness from things like typing on a mechanical keyboard or walking a little heavily, or sleeping with a box fan?

Planetary Science ELI5 What happens to radiowaves?
Do analogue radio waves travel forever, do they eventually disappear? Is it true that radio waves linger out in space, and can be picked up years later like astronauts tuning into old radio shows from the past?
