How challenging was it to apply and get accepted for this kind of job in the States? I live in a fairly rural part of BC, but I never can seem to find any lookout jobs each season (it's been about two seasons of looking now). Also, did you happen to take any specific training or courses prior to starting this position?

Very easy to apply and train.

It is an active lookout, operated by volunteers each day during the warmer months from 0730-1730.

We have to sign up a few weeks in advance for our shifts. We are trained in operation of the lookout and smoke/fire reporting. As a bonus, we get to stay in the cab for the evening after the lookout goes out of service at 1730.

Most of my day was spent giving tours to visitors and answering lots of fun questions.

If you want to get involved, contact your local Forest Fire Lookout Association (https://firelookout.org/)

I'm happy to answer any additional questions you have. ☺️

I'm going to go through that link you sent me and do a bunch more reading, but I really appreciate your response with this info. I'll definitely save this thread if I have any questions later on. Also, those people pictures are absolutely amazing!! Loved the fisheye lense night photo.
