Unwrapping gifts from the garden, Glass Gem reveal

26.4k Upvotes

I have been planting open-pollinated glass gem corn for several seasons now. It is always exciting seeing what genetics pop up.

Every year, I make a Thai Basil bouquet for my wife from the garden. It's her favorite herb.

A kernel of popcorn in my drain has somehow germinated

I was about to turn on my garbage disposal when I noticed something green sticking out of the drain. To my surprise a popcorn kernel fell in there a few weeks ago and actually germinated and developed an entire root system. I carefully removed the roots and transplanted it into what I had available, but I’m afraid it’s not suitable for corn :( if nothing else this just shows how resilient life is and that it always finds a way.

Someone Stole My Watermelon

I decided to grow yellow watermelon this year because they don’t sell them in store. Yesterday, I was thinking of picking it (to avoid this incident), but I wanted to wait a little bit longer until it’s fully ripe. The next day it was stolen. What would you guys do? I’m thinking of a camera to see what happens on my property. By the way, I’m living in Canada to make clear how annoyed I am.

P.S. The watermelon is much larger than the picture shows because of the angle.

My garden is a hunting ground

Love this butterfly bush (sterile, non-invasive)! It attracts pollinators, hummingbirds, tree frogs, and lots of wicked cool spiders... I witnessed this successful hunt yesterday morning in stunned awe 😮 Sorry honey bee... mama's gotta eat 😳

North NJ Zone 7a: planted 35x plugs of native Whorled Tickseed and the butterflies and bees are in love. The perfect retaining wall plant that loves sandy soil in the sun.

My First Personal Vanilla Bean Harvest!

Post image
562 Upvotes

I planted 6 vines of Vanilla 1,5 year ago, to my surprise a few months after planting them flowers started to appear! This would normally take 1-2 years.

I pollinated those flowers and only 3 beans made it, 8 months later the tip started yellowing meaning it’s ready to harvest.

I will be curing them myself and bake some great desserts with it. As a vanilla curer myself I handle hundreds of kg’a of vanilla a year and these beans have a real significance for me 😊.

My McDonalds Halloween bucket full of cotton I grew a few years ago and didn’t know what to do with.

A recent post about someone’s cotton plants led to me admit I had no idea what to do with my cotton so I threw it all into this Vampire bucket. That’s it. A small gardening shitpost for this Sunday.

This is my Volunteer pot. Everything in it is either a volunteer, or an annual that forgot his identity. I’m so proud!

Yesterday's harvest. The orange tomatoes are a gift from the landlord.

Me and my sister are renting a public space where you can grow vegetables. Each plot of land has its own faucet to water the plants. We've been harvesting mostly cucumbers and zuccinis so far. The green pepper was a big surprise, it's our first. Next we should have a melon and a watermelon. The plot of land is rented for four years and our weather is generally very mild, so we'll be able to plant stuff like potatoes in winter.
