Why is 2200 not offered this summer? Thought these types cs classes were a given to be available for summer blocks because of how important they are to unlocking other classes.

What are some easy "non-technical" courses? I am BSMS and have the ability to count 6 credits of non-technical work toward my masters. Any suggestions for fall and summer 25 would be appreciated!

Does anyone know if they will be adding CS 2110 as a Summer 2025 course offering? They have offered it previous summers, but for some reason it isn't offered this summer on OSCAR right now. It is a pretty important class too for CS majors. Any info would help

u/HotPeanut1442 BSCS - 2025 Apr 24 '25
Talking with my 2110 TA friends, they can't get anyone to teach it. Last summer was Landry, and you likely know how that ended up.

What does Fully at a Distance (BOR) Instructional Method mean? Could I take this class during an internship not in Atlanta?

u/Awareness-Potential Apr 14 '25
Poor planning junior and sophomore year, so now a lot of my hard classes have to be bundled into one semester. I am only planning to do 12 credit hours in Fall. Does CS 3251, CS 3220, CS 3210, and Math 3012 sound reasonable in one semester.
→ More replies (4)2
u/ThunderingWest4 Apr 14 '25
Not sure about 3251 but 3210 is a pain in workload (start early or you're fucked), 3012 is prof dependent i think (mine wasnt terrible but still annoying/medium difficulty), and heard that the fall 3220 is supposed to be chillish

What are some easy ‘A’ humanities requirement courses?
2
u/KansasEF5Tornado Apr 17 '25 edited Apr 17 '25
History of art 1 and 2, but particularly 2 because the lectures are shorter and easy. There are 5 test for both so just memorize the paintings and basic characteristics right before the test and you are good. Both classes are asynch though.

Hey folks!
Something that may benefit newer students that I found extremely helpful: Grade Distribution , that is a website that has grade distributions for classes at gatech, you can use it to see how harshly classes are graded, which instructors tend to lead to more or less success, and see the trends in grades over time.
I am currently using it to look for a Summer course, I'm RAing over the summer so I need some layup classes to avoid suffering a hot and slow demise.
To that end, if anyone has taken ECE 6500 and has any insight, I would appreciate your comments! Thanks everyone and best of luck for Summer and Fall :)

Does MATH 6701 - Math Methods in Applied Science cover much new material in linear algebra/diffeq or is it mostly a review of the respective undergrad courses? Hey guys - I'm trying to take the CS 1371 ASE for the summer so I can take CHBE 2100 in the summer to stay on track for graduation (and also save myself another semester worth of tuition 😭).
But just saw that the CS dept isn't offering the summer ASE this year, which sucks.
Is there anything I can do to get credit for the class in time for the summer semester?

u/delta13c Apr 11 '25 edited Apr 11 '25
From what I've heard, the exam takes ~1 month to show up on the transcript. Since it is *pre-req with 2100, I don't know if your plan would have worked even if they did offer the test. Did you not want to take it previous semesters, or are you maybe a new transfer? If a transfer perhaps you have some way to show you understand the content (like a similar class that GT didn't accept) and could talk to your advisor?

What's the difference between the IE ECE 2020 section and the normal section? Is there less coursework in the IE section of the class? Is it easier? Or is it pretty much the same thing as the normal section. I'm already taking an extra year to graduate, prefer not to extend that even further. Planning on working this summer and take an async class for my last 3 humanities credits.
Any advice on which SysArch / DSSD classes not to stack in the Fall / Spring? Any swaps I should make between classes in Fall '25 and Spring '26?

Hey, I'll be taking classes over the summer semester and am looking to taking one class to fulfill the thread requirements for sysarch + info. The current offerings for the summer semester are CS 3300 (intro to software engineering), CS 4675 (Internet computing systems and applications), and CS 4365 (intro to enterprise computing).
Just wondering about the experience anyone has had in either of those classes and their contents, such as what kinds of projects you did, what tech stacks or tools you used or learned to complete those projects, etc.
Also interested in taking CS 4240 instead of CS 3300 and CS 4440 instead of CS 4675/CS 4365 for sysarch and intel thread classes specifically in the future, so i'll gladly welcome any comments on those classes too to determine which class I should take this summer.
Thanks for any comments in advance!

Hi everyone, I had a pathway for a summer conditional start in Summer 2025 and was accepted. The webinars said that there is no minimum number of classes that are required in summer as long as I register for atleast 1 class. Does anyone know if this 1 class has to be in person or can it be online? Can any summer conditional transfer pathway students from previous years share their experience? I already have almost all my free electives completed and only a couple classes from my major are avaialble in summer.
2
u/Tsukuyomi_Zero Apr 21 '25
Alumni and/or people taking SD right now, what is the experience like, particularly for those who were grouped with people they didn't know well. I'm at a crossroads for doing senior design right now. I could take pre-SD over the summer asynchronously because my internship is in another state, but I'd also know nobody in the SD groups. Or I could take pre-SD in the fall with people I know and be a lot less busy, but I'd be putting grad off by another semester when I'm already a fifth year. (I'm an IE major)

I am taking COE 2001 over summer. The canvas course has appeared, but it is kind of vague? I do not see where to find any information about what time class is, what time exams will be, I do not see any details about where or how to complete homework. There is no module or assignments tab in canvas. The syllabus lists dates but not times, and states participation is a part of the grade, so is it not guaranteed to be asynchronous despite being a SOUP class? Anyone know if this is normal and if so, when more information usually appears? Thanks.

TRANSFER ISSUES
So when I received my decision about fall 2024, my gt alumni told me it was a conditional transfer or at the very least a first gen, but I now checked with admission, they said it won’t be counted as first gen but instead a regular transfer due to my degree being cs, even though it was offered. What can I do?
3
u/vivoovix May 24 '25
If you've already applied I don't think there's much you can do unfortunately. CS is the one major that you explicitly cannot transfer into via pathway.

Taking the CS 1331 advanced exam in a few days, I am a pretty familiar with the concepts, but I was curious about the exam format itself. I heard that it was just the CS 1331 final, but I only found an exam from 2016, that being only multiple choice. Can I expect everything from Simpkin’s website to be on the exam, is it all multiple choice, any other practice exams out there? Would appreciate any input from former exam takers!

I took EAS 2600 with Naif. Class is doable, but labs are slightly tricky when it comes to rock ID; also, we had almost no homework with open note quizzes and exams (online for both). Attendance was recommended (with extra credit PointSolution quiz thing); Naif is a chill prof, and he is pretty approachable for help. Some say that 1601 is easier, so whatever fits in your schedule should be fine.

My advisor gave me a plan with courses expected to be completed each semester, but I have an issue. There is only one section available for each of my classes since I am in a niche major. I chose all the expected classes and put them into my Plan Ahead, but one of them overlaps with another by like 20 minutes. How is that even possible, especially if I am expected to take it this semester?
Mind you, these are major specific classes and are only available in the fall. What if it does not work next year, do I have to stay another semester? This is my first semester here so I am still not that good at registration, but can someone please enlighten me?

What does Isolate Course in Canvas mean?
3
u/GT_Ghost_86 ICS 1986 - GT Staff Apr 08 '25
Canvas will allow an instructor to merge two sections of the same course into one virtual section to make it easier to administer. The "Isolate Course in Canvas" flag indicates that, for one of several reasons, combining this section with another is not permitted.
→ More replies (2)2
u/GT_Ghost_86 ICS 1986 - GT Staff Apr 10 '25
Look for the Instructional Method flag of "Fully At A Distance" to find the fully-online classes. Canvas is used for both in-person and online courses.
The only reason the "Isolate Course in Canvas" displays in OSCAR is that it is an attribute for the section in question ; OSCAR shows any and all section attributes without filtering.

1331 will be the hardest. Said to be ~10 hours a week in a normal semester. 2020 is not that bad. 3127 was like 2 hours a week average, 2020 was about 3, 1100 and 1040 is only attendance, very little actual work.
Should adjust these hours to a summer semester.

Need help deciding to take a class or not this summer. Incoming sophomore transfer student, CE major. Mainly behind in math courses (haven't done lin alg, multi, or diffeq) Was reccomended by friends to take multi and diffeq in the fall so I need linalg this summer.
What should I expect for math 1554 over the summer? (difficulty / time commitment) Is the studio required? Is attendance required/enforced? I'd be commuting from home as well and with lecture and studio it'd be all 5 days? (lecture - mwf, studio - t/th)
Is it even worth it to push myself to take it this summer? Or should i just opt for it in the fall and push my math timeline back?
Thanks!
2
u/Top_Pack_4287 CMPE- 2026 Apr 12 '25
Linear is known as a pretty brutal course I'm not going to lie. If it's the only class you take in the summer, than it might help with being able to dedicate most of your time to the class. I also remember the supplementary lecture videos in Canvas that covered the material being super helpful in addition to class. When I took it, quizzes were given in studio and those could technically affect your grade (look at section 7 here https://gatech.instructure.com/courses/114544/pages/common-syllabus-spring-2025, that should explain it a bit better). I think it's def worth a shot unless you feel like the commute is too much, but pushing your math timeline back shouldn't be the end of the world either!
2
u/Evan-The-G EE 2027 & Mod Apr 16 '25
Supplemental videos provided on canvas are EdX videos, so it’s designed to be its own course. My canvas also had media gallery of lecture recordings from barone and I did that instead of attending and it was great. Barone is a great teacher.
You don’t have to go to studio and do the studio quiz if you do all the homework assignments.

I've heard PHYS 2212 is a pretty big time sink, so I wanted to ask-- is PHYS 2212 doable with this schedule (as in, would you recommend doing it along with employment)?. Also, how is the class structured-- are the exams synchronous, etc? (I've never taken an online class at GT before).

u/HotPeanut1442 BSCS - 2025 Apr 24 '25 edited Apr 24 '25
Conte is a better lecturer imo than Moss, but he does have a no technology rule for lecture (which Moss also followed last year, but much more loosely).
I am almost positive they will follow the same format, but if they don't, Conte never changes his (besides maybe some weights)
5 projects (fully autograded, free 50% of your grade)
4-5 written quizzes (20%, these are where you are most likely to loose points)
10 written homeworks (10 % usually very trivial to fortify lecture concepts)
The class will usually run a unified TA team that is imo the best CS TA team (totally not biased here) that will save your grade if you need it. I say this to point out that choice of lecturer is not imperative for 2110.

Hello! I’m an aerospace engineering major (class of 2029) and am wondering if I should retake any of the classes I already have credit for. I’m pretty concerned that my high school didn’t teach me too well and I don’t have a great foundation going into Georgia Tech. Should I retake any of these classes below? Any insights are greatly appreciated! :)

I'm a CS major, so it's a bit different for me, but I would not retake any classes that you already got credit for, and based off the horror stories I hear about Physics 1 and 2, definitely don't retake those. It's a lot better to review your notes and look up some resources online to brush up on relevant course work.

u/Evan-The-G EE 2027 & Mod Apr 16 '25
If I HAD to pick one it would be diff eq. My policy is take all credit possible, because you forget most of the details of the classes you take anyway. Most classes where you may need pre requisite info you can learn again as needed, totally not worth taking the class again.

anyone here have any advice for COE 3001 and ME 2110 for over the summer.

I have taken def bods at another school, but it did not transfer correctly :(

Do you need a permit to apply for ECE 2031? I’m a cs major and it’s a required class when I tried to register it says college restriction (it’s also under major restriction but that gets lifted later). When I looked up college restriction it said to apply for a permit

2
u/KansasEF5Tornado Apr 21 '25
Occasionally, but normally no. If there is a waitlist join it, but otherwise just keep regularly checking the class to see if a waitlist gets added/more seats get added. But the way, if you were looking for MATH 2551 over the summer, some more seats just got added to the other section.

Hey y'all, I am a transfer student this summer from UGA and I was wondering if any other previous transfer students took ENGR 1140 and CS 1371. I'm looking at the summer schedule and it does not look possible for me to take CS 1371 and ME 1670 at the same time, but I took ENGR 1140 at UGA and I have heard about the advanced standing exams. Would I be able to take an advanced standing exam without an extra 2-3 weeks of studying for CS 1371 and not have to take it here? Or is the class too different from UGA's equivalent?

I am a junior studying mechanical engineering and I am a bit behind in classes. Since I am not working this summer I decided to take full time online classes. I would take: ME 3322, ME3340, ME 3017 and INTA 1200.
I wanted to add an easy social sciences elective too to make it 15 hours but I am not sure how bad the course load will be. Ive heard that thermo and fluids are pretty hard during full semesters, but I haven’t heard from anyone that has taken the classes online during the summer.
Has anyone taken these classes online and can give me an opinion on if its doable?

i need some clarity when do maymester grades usually come out?
2
u/GT_Ghost_86 ICS 1986 - GT Staff May 02 '25
There are two answers for that, and you may not like either of them.
Maymester runs from 12 May 25 through 30 May 25. Your instructor may make your grades available unofficially on or after 30 May 25.
GT's Summer term is divided into eight (8) "parts of term," of which the Maymester is one. Thanks to a limitation in the student records system, all grades for a term (regardles of the part of term) can only be entered at the end of the full term (For summer 2025, roughly 25 July 25 through 4 August 25).
The final, official grades for alll parts of term will be available after 1800 on the day after the faculty submission deadline (For this Summer, that would be 5 August 2025. ) They may show sooner than that on the unoffical transcript, but please be aware that THAT portion of OSCAR pulls from a working/scratch collector table, rather than the full academic history and will NOT reflect grade changes posted ater the submission deadline.

I’m interested in doing study abroad (currently thinking of GTL) next summer which will be my last semester. I’m a CS major and will have 6 credits left by that time (free elective and stats). I heard that everyone is required to take exactly 12 credits for letter grade. Is it true? If so, can I get away by being a TA and doing research/vip for credit (if these options are available)? I can’t find the exact course load requirement on europe.gatech.edu and the estimated cost calculated is based on 10 credit hours.

To anyone who's taken CS4262/6262 - Network Security by Prof. Frank LI, is it good? Specifically, if you know, is it better than the one curated by Prof. Wenke Lee? I've heard some not so great reviews about the latter.
Also, it seems like the class is fully enrolled, though the waitlist is more or less empty. I'm an incoming MSCS student starting my term in Fall '25, so the best I can hope for is a spot on the waitlist, I assume, considering that I'll only be ready to enroll at best next month, and at worst in July. Is there anything I can do to help my case? Can I mail Professor Li right now and ask to be considered?

So my OG institution gave me a CALC 1 credit from my AP exam, but I only scored a 3 on it, to transfer to tech a Calc 1 credit is required, but they only take 4s or 5s as credit for Calc 1. Do I still get that transfer requirement fulfilled or no ?
2
u/Primary_Door1129 May 09 '25
Yea at this point they go off of your transfer credit (which was awarded from your previous school for AP exam), which means you should look at the class that AP exam gave you credit for, and then check the credit equivalency tables from your old school to GT and see if it’s the same.

u/JeffTennis May 09 '25
Hey guys, I know how ultra competitive it is to get into GT. I currently live in Savannah taking CS path at Southern. I am planning on moving to Atlanta around summer of next year, no later than end of 2026.
With transferring to Tech, assuming I can overcome the hurdles and get accepted, would GT find it more or less favorable if I took extra CS classes before transferring? Or do you think GT would prefer I took the minimum amount of prereqs then get nearly all my CS classes done at GT?
Background, I am in my mid-30's and going back to school for the first time since the Great Recession. I work full-time but by the time I move to Atlanta, I would have more than enough money to pay for tuition and not have to really work. I'm going balls to wall here the next year and a half before I move, so I'm loading up on minimesters and such.
Funnily enough, I was supposed to go to Tech in 2008 before the Great Recession, then life happened. Don't think them accepting me back then would increase my chances now obviously. Just funny how life comes full circle sometimes. My sister and brother in-law graduated from GT in 2001, I was supposed to go there 2008. She finished her masters in 2020.
2
May 12 '25
To be honest, I don't think it matters how many prereqs you take as long as you meet the course requirements before you apply to transfer. There's also a transfer equivalency table somewhere that shows which courses will transfer and count towards your degree here.

I recently got a permit for COS 2801 pre-health special topics class that I didnt think I would get. My question to anyone who has taken the class is if it is worth taking. The class has a lecture once a week, and then you will have the opportunity to shadow off campus twice in the semester. As a BME student, I will already be taking BMED 4863 (or Health Reach) which is a class devoted to taking kinds in hospitals about engineering and BMED 4813 (Clinical Observation Experience) which is a class with a lecture twice a week, and you must take a shift twice a week off campus at a hospital. The two BMED classes must stay, but I wanted to know if doing all three would be a bad idea. For context, I am a third-year at gatech who will be taking a gap year before Med school. This would also be for the Fall 2025 semester (football semester).

Hello, I’m a Conditional Pathway transfer student currently taking summer classes. During orientation, I didn’t sign up for Linear Algebra since there wasn’t an online option available—and I was aiming to stick with synchronous classes only for the summer.
Now that I’ve started, I’m trying to knock out both Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus as soon as possible because I’m an Industrial Engineering major, and these math courses are prerequisites for more advanced ones down the line. I’m considering taking both MATH 1554 and MATH 2550 in the same semester (if it is possible).
Has anyone done this before or know if it’s possible/recommended to take them together? Any insight would be super helpful!

CS 4400: Intro Databases w/Melinda McDaniel– usefulness for CompE?
Either this or HTS 3029 Ancient Rome during the Oxford Study Abroad this summer.
CS 4400 applies only to the Information thread. I am a freshman unsure of the threads but perhaps will take Devices + Embedded along with my ID minor. HTS fulfills my social sciences but is CS 4400 worth studying more for + in the UK vacay + w/ McDaniel who has kinda a low ratemyprof?
I can def do a SS anytime, and if CS is imp and useful, I’ll take it! Any thoughts are highly highly appreciated!! 🙌 Thank you all so much
