Announcement I built Mellons.app to make finding food way easier

Hey everyone!

I'm a GT student and just launched Mellons.

It's a free app that helps you quickly figure out where to eat on campus. Instead of looking through outdated websites or panning around Google Maps, you can just use the Mellons app! It lets you check what's open on campus right now, and see more info (like the weekly hours).

It works for a lot of schools, but I wanted to share it with you all as something I built because of my own problem remembering what's open when.

You can check it out at mellons.app! I'd love to hear what you think about it, and hopefully it saves you all some time!

Question Dropping VIP during add/drop period

Will it be okay to drop a VIP I was registered for during the add/drop period? I just didn’t end up liking the idea of the vip once I went to a lecture. I know there’s this rule where you can’t join a differnet vip for the next semester if you switch teams, but it should be fine during the add/drop period no?

Rant Noodle Theory (Previously Bento Sushi) portion size is ridiculous

Post image
125 Upvotes

According to the staff, Bento (a third party) backed out from working with Tech Dining this semester so Tech had to make their own brand which becomes Noodle Theory.

That said, this new brand's portion size is absolutely insane. It doesn't even cover the bottom of the bowl. Like sure it's 9.99 but it should at least be filling.

The beef is also completely different from what Bento served in the past. Seems like poke is also not coming back in the foreseeable future so I might just never eat there again.

Question Any1 got the scoop on how GT will manage enrollment with limited resources?

My CS 2200 prof said that they had to make the class hybrid this sem due to not enough big lecture halls for the class. Additionally, campus resources like housing just to name one are limited and don't seem to be increasing proportionally. GT's enrollment seems to keep increasing so I'm wondering if anybody knows what the GT administration is doing, if anything, to handle this issue since I remember last year them saying that they plan to significantly increase enrollment over the coming years. I'm also curious as to why they seem so eager to expand enrollment.

Rant What has the GT bus and infrastructure been on recently?

As an avid GT Stinger rider from east to west campus, these new bus routes STINK and I need to know the reasoning why they thought to change them. Some issues that I have:

  1. I’ve only seen 1 circulator bus at a time. Why?? It’s the ONLY route that I would use (as I never have to go to willage/ nave anymore), but it took a good 30 minutes for it to circle all the way around. 1a. Why have they not labeled the physical circulator bus as “circulator”?? When I was waiting for the bus on Monday, it was labeled as “special”, so I skipped it, just to find out it WAS the circulator route. The next day? The label was just a fully colored bar.
  2. These bus travel times are INSANELY long. I’ve seen someone say that it took them an hour to get from culc to the Marta station. Insane
  3. Why did the gold route absolutely get nerfed? The loop near culc compared to the loop near the student center is so much smaller, and requires that the busses make tighter turns.
  4. The intersection of ferst drive and techwood. I always turn right there to go to Publix/ I-75. They make it a no turn on red (???) and I kid you not, THE LIGHT ONLY STAYS GREEN FOR 5 SECONDS. There is an insane amount of traffic that piles up. 90% of people turn instead of going straight so this is confusing to me. 5.what on God’s green earth did they do to the means street drive and ferst drive intersection. They added a SUPER SHARP turn for busses and it just completely messed up how it looks and operates.

I was learning to deal with the bike lanes that no one uses, but now this is just being ridiculous. If anything, they made things WORSE. Has there really been an indication of pedestrian accidents to warrant no turn on red’s?

Rant We need to fix 5th and Williams Street light now

Literally impossible to drive through during the busy hours of classes through this light. IDK why its just constantly on flashing red like a stoplight (if that was the plan, why add a full light system) because it was on a timer, working like normal, during the summer.

Drivers are literally having to cut students off because otherwise there won't be an opening. Im concerned on both ends of this argument: drivers can't get to where they need to without like a 5-10 min delay and pedestrians are in more danger because drivers will start just going as their signal to let them through (it is ATL after all, we arent exactly known for peaceful driving)

Sports IM Soccer discussion and rumors of a potential second registration

Right now IM Soccer is set up as 11v11 with just one “mini-league” of 16 teams. Last year there were 3–4 leagues (Frat, Open, Co-Ed, etc.), and the Open League alone had around 50+ teams. Currently there are 41 teams on the waitlist (including us) so it's not looking too good.

I’ve heard some talk that this might just be a small preseason tournament before the actual season, but I haven’t been able to confirm that anywhere. My friends and I made it to the top 4 last season, so we were a little bummed to see such a big change.

Does anyone know what’s going on or have more info? I know a lot of people loved IM soccer last season, so hopefully we can still keep the energy going.

Rant To reach Scheller from GLC, take 3 buses. WHAT

How is this acceptable route design? You need to take green, then red, then gold. Also GLC to campus center and Scheller to campus center are both now 2-route endeavors.

I get that the old routes had some problems like bunching up etc, but somehow the problems of the new routes are way more annoying...

The only thing I like about the new routes are late night hours and the new everyday Atlantic Station route. The rest of the design is patchwork

Rant Anyone know why the Ferst/Fifth intersections out to Tech Square are now objectively worse?

So three intersections in total, lets group them in two types:

  • Ferst/5th/Fowler and 5th/Techwood: The light patterns are now such that the crosswalks are almost setup to be scrambles. Except there is no signage, the freshly painted crosswalks are not for a scramble, cars are not blocked from a right-on-red, and the times are not extended for a scramble. The change means if you are driving you wait longer (other direction plus crosswalk time instead of just other direction) and if you are walking you wait longer (2-4 road cycles instead of 0-1 depending on crossing direction). Why? A lot more pedestrians crossing without the signal since the wait is obnoxiously long.

  • 5th/Williams: I mean c'mon. You redo the whole streetscape and install a new bike path on the opposite side of the road for a single block?

Anyone have insight on if this is the final design? Are there more changes to come?

Question Is there somewhere else I can take this to?

Post image
10 Upvotes

As context, I recently noticed a charge on my account for dining dollars (600) that I have no recollection of incurring, and I never saw the charge until after the deadline to cancel. If I did in fact select this option, it was by mistake. Personally, I feel like the response I got is dismissive and unreasonable — 600 dollars is a lot of money to spend unwillingly. Does anyone know if there is another place/office where I can appeal this?
