Discussion Is Ryuzo meant to be hateable or tragic? Spoiler

I can’t seem to get a grasp of what the intention is with the writers and especially because of how the community seems to view him.

Honestly the way people talk about Ryuzo, I’d think the writers wanted to make him Asian Micah Bell. Some kind of cold blooded opportunist who’ll gleefully murder anyone in service of hisself and has some pretty disgusting tendencies.

For me I don’t really get that kind of feeling. He breaks down at burning the villager, and I think he’s genuine when refuses Khotun’s offer to kill Jin, out of petty revenge, and has to be reminded that’s it’s for the sake of his men. Now I’m sure he was jealous of Jin but I really do think it was as straight forward as just wanting to look out for the Straw Hats, which informs me as to why he rejects Jin’s offer. Ryuzo reasons that Shmiura will get them all killed, and to his credit, Shimura practically puts the samurai in a firing line when they rebuild the bridge. And if Jin wasn’t a video game MC, the Mongols realistically should’ve won. And I mean technically they did. By the time Jin wakes up, practically all of Tsushima is under Mongol occupation. But hey maybe there’s a real world example of someone waging a one man war against an enemy force that’s both numerically superior and technologically.

SPOILERS for Predator Killer of Killers

In one of the sections of the movie we follow two brothers from feudal Japan. Both are raised with the expectation that only one of them will take the mantle of becoming a Samurai. One of the brothers, Kenji refuses, valuing the relationship he has with the brother. But the other one, Kiyoshi comes at him like he’s his “mortal enemy.” It destroys their relationship and Kenji runs away, believing that Kiyoshi values the status of becoming a Samurai rather than their bond as brothers.

Ands that’s how I think Ryuzo viewed the tournament. It wasn’t just losing out on becoming a Samurai that stung. It was that Jin his BEST FRIEND, the friend that he’d apparently tried to sail with Iki Island to had beat him so bad that it likely made him believe Jin didn’t care about their relationship. In Ryuzo’s mind, it didn’t matter what would’ve been done afterwards because to him, Jin valued his status and would rather humiliate his best friend rather than lose to “a lowly Ronin.” And by the time they do get to discuss it, they’re too occupied with dealing with the Mongol to properly discuss their fallout.

But hey, maybe I’m giving Ryuzo too much credit. I’m a sucker for mercenaries with an immaculate fit, and a genuine care for the men under their command (Phillip Graves).

Discussion Honour V Pragmatism [Shallow Dilemma]

Post image
135 Upvotes

Is there ever given a reason why Jin should stay Honour bound in the story or why Samurai even follow this mindset in the game. This is honestly the biggest thing that frustrated me about the game, its not a bad idea but the execution just doesn't work at all when it could of I'm this setting and creative liberty would have allowed the mongols to bring normal citizens and have justifiable reasons for invading that has sympathy rather than the real historical reason being "power". It would have make being the ghost have actual moral consequences and add more depth to being that or a "Honourable" Samurai and lord of the land.

The game frames itself as a deep dilemma between honor (samurai tradition) and pragmatism (the Ghost’s way), but when you peel it apart, the balance is skewed. This dilemma is always cited as why Ghost of Tsushima's story is complex but I never understood why.

Pragmatism Always Wins in Practice:

Jin’s use of Ghost tactics (assassinations, poison, fear) consistently saves lives and wins battles.

The Mongols are portrayed as too ruthless and overwhelming for “honorable combat” to ever suffice.

Almost every time Jin breaks samurai tradition, the practical payoff is undeniable: more survival, more victories, fewer innocent deaths.

So the player never really feels punished for breaking from honor... if anything, the game rewards it. As gameplay just gets easier, while Honourful samurai is the harder way to play.

Honor is a Strawman

Shimura is supposed to embody the case for honor, but his arguments collapse under scrutiny and is always incorrectly applied. He thinks villagers fear them but no one does except one random villager who thinks we are the reason the Mongols use poison but we didnt have anything to do with that as the Mongols learnt it off screen somehow. Most villagers idolize us. Its funny how the samurai mask (Menpo/mempo) was designed for all to be in fear of a samurai yet Shimura doesnt seem to know that.

Lack of True Consequences

For a moral dilemma to feel deep, both paths need real costs. But in Ghost of Tsushima:

Choosing Ghost tactics doesn’t corrupt Jin, alienate his allies outside Shimura for some reason, or destabilize the island. It only upsets Shimura and the Shogun. DO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT SHOGUN LITERALLY MEANS? The Barbarian CRUSHING Generalissimo, Shogun should praise Jin and make him the new Jito if this was real life which would make for a better reason for Shimura side against Jin than saying its what the Shogun wants but it never makes sense why? Does he want to be invaded?

Shimura himself benefits from Jin’s pragmatism but still condemns it, which makes him look hypocritical rather than principled.

The only “cost” of being the Ghost is Jin’s personal relationship with his uncle—intimate, yes, but narrowly personal, not societal or profound by any means.

The game never shows anything actually bad coming from it and no the Khan getting poison makes no sense and it has nothing to do with us. Technically the mongols have their own poisons like the mongols in Ikki so why did they wait till jin used his for them to remember they have their own poison but still use his without any knowledge how to replicate it.

Spoiler Jin's actions had consequences

As i replay ghost of tsushima i got to think of jin's actions. On one he save lives as the ghost. On the other, he unintentionally make people lose values of honor, and respect.

We can hear in castle shimura about a situation that a merchant poison his business rival, presumably being inspired by the ghost.

On yuna's tale jin made people terrified of the ghost.

At the end on lord shimura tale, we hear about the ghost's army and it worries shimura that the people will stop listen to the shogun. It's understandable fear, that the people will stop listen to the laws and their leaders. When jin say he will make sure the people will still listen the samurai and shogun, shimura tells you taught them to defy their leaders, why do you think they will obey you? That is a good question- if they will rebel against the shogun because of the ghost, and jin, a person who taught them to defy their leaders, will tell them to stop, there is a good chance they will defy him as he defy shimura.

I know what jin did was the right thing to do. I know the old way of honor of shimura would led them to death. But i do think his actions had consequences he never imagined.

Question Will I still get the Eagle's hallucinations after I go back to Tsushima, before defeating the eagle?

I'm on act 2, this is my 2nd playthrough, so I know the whole plot. I just wanna grab some important items like the Horse Armor, different charms, Saddlebags, mythic armor etc. And go back to my main story of act 2. We can go back to Tsushima after finishing the Main Iki quest named, Jin From Yarikawa. Will I still get hallucinations while completing quests in Tsushima?

Misc. Well this would've been handy to know

Didn't realize you could farm respawnable materials in this way, not that I really need to at this point but it's good to know for any potential future runs I do, say like a zero upgrades ng+ run(start with no upgrades and potentially start upgrading during the run? Might be fun/interesting to do). Granted I'd have to beat the game with zero upgrades on a new file and boy does that sound rough if I want to do it on a normal difficulty(normal being hard or lethal since the others are kinda meh).

Support No cutscene plays after an air assassination. Need Help.

So I have been playing Ghost of Tsushima for a while now and it has been a very good experience so far, except any time I perform an air assassination, it cuts to a white screen and stays like that, forcing me to restart the game and to not do any air assassinations. I tried looking up a solution online, found a reddit thread that talks about replacing a certain cutscene file, specifically the v_t_dfa_micro_flashback but I can't seem to find any folder to place it in. My copy of the game isn't a steam one, its a repack.

Stone stance is definitely my favorite because of the sequences. My least favorite would be wind stance because I cannot spearmen, but it is also the flashiest imo.

Theory Theory: Jin Sakai’s Grave Lies in Yōtei

we never actually got Jin’s final story in Tsushima. Did he die on the island? Or… What if Jin himself traveled north after the events of Tsushima and lived his final days in Yotei, Hokkaidō? His followers carried with them the legend of the Ghost, retelling Jin’s deeds to their children, who passed it down again and again. Over 300 years later, those stories would still echo in Yōtei as myth and also his followers could have buried him at the foot of Mount Yōtei, where a hidden shrine or grave might still exist.

Imagine exploring in Yōtei and finding a weathered grave marked only by the Sakai clan crest… realizing that Jin’s journey ended here, and that Atsu is literally carrying forward the mantle of a legend buried beneath the mountain.

Discussion New game on lethal possible? or go ng + on lethal?

So as title says, is it possible to play a new game on lethal? I say this because I finished the game on hardest mode for first playthrough but that was over a year ago. I want to replay game again before yotei but obviously I've forgotten controls and parts of the story. Figured it would be better to start fresh. Do they give tutorial in an ng plus playthrough? Thanks in advanced.
