I think I'm having gluten reactions and I think it may be from the WalMart brand frozen hash brown patties??

I eat them several times a week and according to the label they're safe, but over the last week I've had so many GI episodes that are acting just like the ones I have when I've been exposed to gluten. Besides eggs, bacon, rice, and other things that we know don't have gluten in them, I think those are the only things I'm eating regularly. Does anybody else eat these? Have you noticed any reactions recently? I can't help but wonder if maybe they changed the formula but it hasn't changed on their packaging yet... Wouldn't they be required to update their label as soon as the formula changed?

They’ve always been made with wheat, haven’t they? Most frozen hashbrowns are.

They don't list wheat. The WinCo store brands do though. I know a lot of times those patties have wheat but idk.

Some say dextrose (wheat) on the label. I can’t use any generic label ones as it’s cross contamination or has that on it. I stick with a known name brand that doesn’t have it and I’m fine.

Dextrose is GF, even if it's made from wheat.

For whatever reason, it sets myself and my daughter off. If we avoid it with other brands we are fine.

Do you generally react to GF wheat ingredients? Could it be that you have an issue with wheat as a whole and not just gluten?

Well I am celiac. Have been for about 20 years. I just have done what works for me and not kept up as much on new info as I should have 😬

Yes, we can't eat those either. Not sure why. Not just the Walmart brand but other brands of hash brown patties, too.

Looking them up on my Walmart app, the level  states “may contain wheat.” With Walmart, there’s a decent chance it does if the warning is on there.

I actually checked the label last time I was in the store and they had wheat of some sort. I put them back. But I honestly I thought theirs were safe previously?

Iirc the shredded hash browns by Great value do not contain gluten. But the regular hash browns do.

Ooh maybe they did change the formula and are using the old packaging until they run out. Could explain why certain Walmarts show different things?.

Possibly. I truly don't know but I thought I bought some several months back and they were fine and no wheat on the label. Maybe factories got consolidated and now gluten shows up in these.

Walmart probably is having them manufactured with their other frozen potato items, the seasoned fries and wedges, for example.

Is it the great value brand? Only hash browns patties I have seen that are a “Walmart brand” and I do remember they weren’t safe But maybe we are talking about two different items.

Man, such a bummer. I've been eating them for a while now, and just now started having an issue (although before this week I started getting tons of canker sores after having essentially zero for a long, long time).

Better luck with the Ore Ida ones maybe?

I don't know, but make sure the label is in fact gluten free rather than just lacking wheat in the ingredients. Maybe even pre-make your own from potatoes and freeze them.

My mom (who also has celiac) buys the Great Value French fries, which are labeled “may contain wheat”. When I can select them I get Ore Ida which don’t say that and are labeled gluten free.

I know there’s a ton of controversy on some subs about them, but I’ve never reacted to the Trader Joe’s hash brown patties, if you have one of their stores near you.

i just bought some and haven’t had any issues, but cross contamination only hits me in specific circumstances. i guess i bought ones with the old recipe if in fact the recipe changed to include wheat. bummer

just checked the package and it says the same ingredients as usual and the typical may contain traces of wheat warning.
