selfpromo (software) Tiny RPG - Hero Printer v1.0 - Build billions of characters
Version 1.0 is now out and it allows you to add *your own assets* to the library, pushing the customization even further :) I am currently holding a sale, so the printer is 45% off. Grab it while it is hot! :D

I don't see anywhere an explicit statement regarding the license of generated assets. The project itself is CC with Attribution, but i don't think that is the same as a license for the generated images.

u/tiopalada 2d ago
Same goes for anything generated by the tool, CC BY 4.0 :D The EULA and the License are both included in the tool as well.

u/blamestross 2d ago
Awesome! You should make that explicit in the description. It not being there made me instantly suspicious.

You are right mate, might be a good idea to have a disclaimer both on the video as well as on the itch page, as a header. Thank you for the headsup!

This looks really cool! Maybe I missed it somewhere, but In terms of showing off its capabilities, having one picture with like 8 different characters made from your tool would go a long way to show what it's capable of producing. I had to watch the video to see that, but I would have been bought in way sooner with a simple comparison pic.

Hmmm that is a cut that can surely be added. You mean like a few sheets with characters built, right?
11
u/gendulf 2d ago
Probably just one sheet with different characters all in standing pose. To see what a roster of characters made using this could look like (e.g. how varied can the characters I make get?).

u/tiopalada 1d ago
Ohhhh, got it. You know, I already have a loop of 9 characters walking around and they all were built using the tool, might as well slap that on the promo as a showcase. Thank you for the feedback, mate!

I have no need for the software, but GOD, does that promo slap!

Will there be a way to import assets used for composing characters?
3
u/tiopalada 2d ago
You can do that already from version v1.0 ownwards! :D You have to reload the tool, tho, since it builds the file dependency once it is loaded. For now the only thing you can't add are "shapes: , but you can make do with skins instead.

The only thing this needs is a really simple "attack" animation for FF1 style battles. The work is amazing, the price is super affordable, I hope this blows up for you!
3
u/tiopalada 2d ago
That is on the roadman, for sure! At least some very basic attack animations, so people can also use those for action RPGs. You know, a slash/swinging and a stab.

As someone who is just starting off attempting game dev later in life, this is so amazing to see. Now the art aspect can be so less daunting while also trying to keep to a style I curate as opposed to searching for pre done assets! I will definitely be adding this to my tool set

u/tiopalada 1d ago
Thank you so much, mate! I am glad you find it useful, I poured my heart not only on the programming as on the assets as well. I hope I can dedicate more time to adding more quality content to the printer, to give you guys more variety and possibilities while saving time, resources and effort, so you can focus on writting and coding.

u/AllenKll 2d ago
well that's pretty darn cool. What I do not see is any information about license or copywrite for said created characters.
2
u/tiopalada 2d ago
Everything is under CC BY 4.0, both the tool and what it generates! :D I will add a disclaimer on the itch page as well as the video. But there is a license and EULA included in the tool!

u/ballaman200 2d ago
Any chance that you will increase it to 8 directions instead of 4? :)
1
u/tiopalada 1d ago
It might happen, but I have a few other features in mind before that, such as basic attack animations and emotions - surprise, laughter, cowering, sadness and so on.

u/WatoXa 2d ago
Can I customize it with my own assets? and remove/add different different menus?
2
u/tiopalada 1d ago
You can add your own assets, yes, but for now you have to follow the tool standards - so no new options/menus can be added. However you can bypass that by composing in multiple steps - build a character with what you need as a base, export, add it to the library as a skin or as any other piece of clothing, reload the tool, build over this new base. This will let you bypass limitations such as just one cape or just one shoulder piece and so on.

This looks like a godlike time saver. Good work. Would it be okay to create a char and edit them afterwards in other pixel art software?
2
u/tiopalada 1d ago
Thank you, mate!
Regarding the editing: Absolutely, please do! In fact, I do suggest doing so in order to get even more out of the tool. Having some editing skills will go a long way since you have access to the whole library of assets as raw PNGs.
EDIT: It just occured to me that might be a good idea to add my palette to the files so people can use it as reference to edit the files and keep everything coherent.

Nice work. Reminds me ofย http://charas-project.net/ but more modern.ย
2
u/tiopalada 1d ago
Thank you, mate! Bringing up charas project surely takes me back. This has been running for quite a while, I believe it is on since RMK 2k.

its cute seeing how a person who knows how to draw try to pretend not to know how to draw
1
u/tiopalada 1d ago
BWAHAHA yeah, it is just not how someone who can't draw would draw something, I swear I tried my best!
2
u/Loqh9 1d ago
Very cool stuff
Having given up on drawing my characters maybe if I ever work on a game with characters I could use this!
Bookmarked it, we'll see what the future holds for me. Great job!
2
u/tiopalada 1d ago
Thank you so much, mate! I hope you get back to gamedev and this proves to be useful! :)
2
u/Loqh9 1d ago
I am in gamedev, I just changed game plans so that it does not involve a top down camera with a character moving sides and top/bottom
2
u/tiopalada 1d ago
OOHHHHH got it. Ah well, if that ever changes - or if any update I make proves to be useful even if that doesn't change - give the tool a try and let me know your feedback! :D

Is it only a generator or a game? Cuz it would be really cool as a steam workshop thing
4
u/tiopalada 1d ago
A generator! It was supposed to be on Steam already, but I hit a few snags. October is the maximum deadline for it to be available on Steam as well. Now, about the workshop integration, I have to check with the guys on GotchaGotcha if that is a thing and doable.
2
u/Silveruleaf 1d ago
It's not a easy thing to do. Fighters, mobas and RPGs are the hardest ones to make. I just figured it would be neat, but it's a easy thing to do Will need to check it out. Looks cool.
2
u/tiopalada 1d ago
Aye mate! Stay tuned for more info, I believe they will get back to me before the month ends, so we can align what will be the approach with the tool and the workshop.

i just bought this, thanks for promoting it here! i have some little game ideas that i hope to work on in the near future and this would be perfect for one of them at least. i'm hoping today's purchase allows me access to future releases as well? also, would be really nice to have a "random" button that just slaps random combinations together. extra functionality: let various "parts" be turned on/off for the random button (i.e. randomize everything except the Back, because i want a character without anything on their back).

u/SwashbucklinChef 2d ago
Well shit, guess I'm making a purchase today. How frequently will you be adding new assets? Is there a place where requests can be made / commissioned?
