discussion Whats your dream game you have always wanted to create?

As I continue to build my skills as a game developer and game development instructor for Godot I think im finally getting close to being capable to create me dream game.

Since I have always enjoyed indie games and games that do not require a vast amount of compute power all my games I have made fit into those categories. My dream game however will more then likely be a bit more than what im used to but I am finally going to start working on it.

The game I have in mind is a slasher first person battle game. You play as a type of medieval soldier such as a knight, axe man, archer, pikemen etc. But the catch is you spawn in with your own handful of troops that follow you around giving the player the illusion you are in a massive battle only with about only 7 actual human players. This idea I have would still allow me to create a game at an indie level and still not use up too much compute power hopefully šŸ˜…

What has been your dream game to create?

Nice try, my secret project will stay with me!! ! (as it will probably never see the light of day)

Let’s see. I think I have a couple of ā€œDream gamesā€.

I would like to make a farm sim-action rpg with a good narrative. Think like Rune Factory or Harvestella just with refined combat options and the farming aspect is much better integrated into the story and combat gameplay.

I would also like to make a grid based tactics RPG engine, if not a full CRPG, something like Final Fantasy Tactics or the Disgaea games, that uses the Pathfinder 2e ruleset, in a Paper Mario style (2D sprites in a 3D environment).

My third dream game would be a ā€œSouls-likeā€ action RPG that would be a sequel to or have a setting heavily inspired by John Bunyan’s Holy War. A different game along those same lines would be an action RPG Metroidvania that explores the value of trust vs self-determination set in my long standing fantasy world.

Something that is like to include in all my game would be a simple roguelike mode similar to the Ancient Cave of Lufia 2 (which I think was almost perfect in execution).

I’m still learning Godot and my skills are definitely more inclined to the narrative rather than to the programming side, but I’m making progress I think.

I love RPGs but dang they take ao long to create šŸ˜…šŸ˜… every time I make one I feel like it takes months due to the vast amount of stuff continually being added in.

I'm totally stealing the idea of a farming action-rpg

That sounds hilarious and like it could be a really good gameplay loop

Idk if it's a "dream game" but for a while I've wanted to make a game about being a blind dog where you see the world through smells. Like everything is sort of watercolor and you get to know the place you live by remembering the colors of smells and also using sound bubbles to help add texture. So like for example you know the orange streak is the cat because when you bumped into the orange blob there was a "hiss" in a jagged speech bubble. Or you know you're on the kitchen tiles by the click clack of your own nails. I feel like there's not much game there really, but I think it would be interesting to tell the story of the human you live with from a very different pov.

Space game with a deep story and lots of choice. I don't want a big galaxy, probably a single hand-crafted system. Far too big for a solo hobbyist like me! I might make a couple of small aspects of it one day.

4

u/Waybook 12h ago

I don't see why it would be too big for a solo hobbyist. In my experience, level design is one of the biggest time sinks in game dev and space game would need a lot less of that, no?

3

u/The-Chartreuse-Moose 12h ago

I'm imagining a lot of content. Ships, planets (with cities and biomes), characters. Mechanics for planetary movement, fighting, talking, ship system changes. It would take years and years. Not that I don't still want to try...

3

u/Waybook 12h ago

I see. Yes, that would take a lot of time, if you also want to make planets with cities and biomes.

u/The-Chartreuse-Moose 11h ago

I do a lot of designing and planning on paper for my game ideas. Recently I've been tinkering with a scaled down idea that could take place perhaps in something like an asteroid belt in a far-flung system with just a few locations to fly between.

Space games would be fun to make. Coding like gravity to work correctly would be intresting especially when getting in and out of ships.

A web based low poly jet fighter shooter (not a flight sim, more like ace combat). I'm like you in that I really appreciate the craftsmanship involved in the creation of indie and web performant games in particular so it won't be graphics intensive.

I actually have a few dream games but that one's top of the list.

u/njhCasper 22h ago

This but in space is my dream game. It's well on its way. https://www.reddit.com/r/godot/comments/1gy8hft/3d_space_combat/ I'm basically trying to recreate House of the Dying Sun. All my code is available on github under the MIT license.

Ooo honestly i haven't seen very much flight games. I think the only flight games I remember that were really different and fun were the old roblox ones. Something about low poly flight games are so cool!

2 ideas:

First, I want to make some sort of open-world "homage" to retro 2d games. An open-world that tries to tie together as many genres as possible! For now, I mostly got the idea of this galaxy that has a planet for each genre... But yeah, idea in progress. I just want to tell the player to just do whatever they feel like doing. And if I really wanna go beyond, maybe even turn it into some sort of creation tool, let players create their own levels on some planets, but I bet that would be some insane work. For now, it's mostly a pretext for learning game development, in general.

And the second idea... Well, if I ever get more comfortable with 3D development, I want this weird mix of Farming Sim and Platformer. Just imagine, plants that double as trampolines, ziplines, tarzan ropes, slides! I want the player to not only harvest the plants, but to use them to move faster around their "farm", see? Maybe even use these plants to reach new areas with new seeds around the map.

I'm not sure it's a "dream game" but I would like to create a point & click adventure game with lots of animations. Right now I'm releasing much smaller games because the scope is too big (but writing scripts for PnC in between, hoping to actually get to the actual development next year)

Progress is Progress 😁

Like monkey island?

3

u/chamutalz 6h ago

I was thinking about "Discworld" when the idea came up, but yeah, "Monkey Island" is a good example

I think I have a few. The one I’m working on now is a multiplayer role-playing game where the roles are skill-based professions. Players have to lean on each other to get the stuff they need to craft. Blacksmiths require miners and so on

1

u/redfoolsstudio_com 23h ago

I like that, it forces players to actually work together.

3

u/ReptileBoy1 22h ago

I want to make a survival game that blends aspects of Ark:Survival Evolved and Minecraft. I'd like to make a map for players to explore, and dinos to tame for various aspects of progression. It would have a time travel theme, with the player being sideswiped by a time machine car, with a wacky scientist displacing locations and organisms from all throughout time, where they're sent to this conglomerate island.

3

u/TestSubject006 22h ago

I just want a really good no-bloat vehicular combat game with solid multiplayer. I have a template for it working already, but I'm not good at level design and art direction. I'm a systems programmer.

2

u/xr6reaction 20h ago

Something like crossout? Or what is your idea? Wdym "no-bloat"? Do you have an example of a vehicular combat game with bloat?

2

u/TestSubject006 18h ago

No, more along the lines of twisted metal. And no bloat with the multiplayer, just simple game lobbies with simple rules. Jump in with some friends, throw a few bots to add fodder, and go nuts on a first to 10.

3

u/Acceptable_Answer570 21h ago

A 2D/pixel-art feel good motorcycle road trip/survival game.

2

u/phnxindie 22h ago

I have a lot of games I want to make, I have too many ideas x_x

Though out of all of them, the game want to make the most is a platforming fighting game featuring a dragon-phoenix creature. Movement would have running, jumping, wall running and jumping, flying, diving and swooping around, etc. Combat would have clawing, biting, pouncing, dodging, parrying, etc.

Story would be symbolic, inspired by my own life experiences

2

u/EliamZG Godot Junior 22h ago

Ah... I keep dreaming new games all the time, if only I had the art skills to bring them to life, I am trying to get into pixel art against my vision to at least make prototypes for them.

2

u/TyrannasaurusGitRekt 22h ago

I have two main ones (keeping details to myself though):

1: an F/TPS-RTS, such an underrepresented genre (loved Battlezone II)

  1. an open map, large-ish scale (64+) combined arms singleplayer shooter with intelligent bots, basically Battlefield 1942/Vietnam/2/2142 type gameplay, but more fleshed-out bots

2

u/ectoscreen 22h ago

I have 3 big ideas, one of which I am currently working on:

  1. A 2D platforming metroidvania where the primary mechanic is a ball and/or orb you can throw, teleport to, and bullet time throw midair at enemies. Certain abilities give it a different trajectory, or make it behave a certain way, or just have it do more damage at a trade off. This is the one I am currently working on, but I am mainly just in the demo test build phase.

  2. A 3D Beat 'em up, with it being a cross between Dungeons of Hinterberg and Monster Hunter. Essentially, you are a "Gig Hunter" for the app "DoorBash" and you go around on your busted and falling apart electric scooter to take care of monsters, all while making enough to pay for rent and Scooter repairs. This one would be a decent amount of work to make a reality, and I already have a story blocked out for it (still need to work on much more for it), but it is a project I super like the idea of! Want to make this in the future when I am more used to Godot.

  3. This is my ultimate dream game: Balloons. This is one that I have a full story for, gameplay mechanics in mind, and a visual style. I have also made some music for it too, mainly to help with keeping the vibe of it cohesive (music really helps me maintain a feeling, so I work on music early, that is just a me thing). Synopsis:

In a small seaside village, two best friends, Abby and Rachel (Placeholder names), look forward to moving to the big city and starting school together. However, a day after graduation, a freak car accident leaves Rachel injured and Abby dead. With only the summer between her and her first days of University, Rachel seeks out the stories of those in her town to learn how they overcame their own losses.

This game is one I have worked on for over 6 years. My Father passed away in 2019 due to Cancer, something we didn't even know he had until 6 weeks before he died. It was really hard on me and my family, especially since he died 3 days before my 18th birthday and right at the beginning of summer break before my senior year. I began writing this story as a way to help myself cope and process this trauma, and it is something I feel a very strong connection to.

I have tried learning how to make games before, but I have RSD, so I would often stop. Now that I am finally in a place where I can get myself to make games, I am working my way up to making this game. I want it to be as close to perfect as possible (obviously it will never be perfect in my mind, but I still want to give it time), so I am holding off until I have the skills and tools to make it. However, this is my dream game. I want it to help others the way that writing it has helped me.

u/Syelan 20h ago

There are so many great ideas on this post, and this one really went through my heart. I hope you are doing better now, that writing this story helped and that the game will be be as great as you envision it. Rooting for you.

2

u/ectoscreen 19h ago

Thank you so much! I am doing much better now, a lot of therapy and conversations later. And I hope so too! Your comment has actually lit a fire under me for these projects, so thank you again!!! I truly appreciate your comment!

u/neutronicus 19h ago

I think Axiom Verge has that ā€œteleport to a projectileā€ mechanic, although it’s not really central.

2

u/ectoscreen 19h ago

That has been on my "To play" list for a while, so I will definitely put it at the top now! Thanks!

u/shunkertron 22h ago

Couple of mine would be:

A Space Station 13 clone, but that project would end up being cursed (iykyk)

A wrestling game, but in the form of running a wrestling promotion, so you'd be scouting and managing talent, booking venues and making the card, down to setting up match flow and deciding where there would be "high spots" with the idea being that you'd need to balance the health of your talent vs crowd engagement, your talent would have various stats that would cover things like in ring work quality, mic skills...etc, this would put in a random element that would cause your plans to be "botched" from time to time. I think I would also put in the option to watch the simulation or skip to the results.

Admittedly the wrestling game would be very niche, but probably of great interest to nerds like me

at this point? any game lol .. i'm just always too ambitious and get attracted by shiny new project ideas.
i'd love to make a turn based game one day. currently working on a 2d topdown shooter. would like it to become something like binding of isaac / enter the gungeon, but i think thats again too ambitious for now. since im mainly a programmer, i'm currently mostly practicing pixelart to get better at it. i cant stand placeholder stuff, i need at least some moving pixels and aesthetic and i dont like using asset packs, so i need to learn it anyways :D

u/architectBeans 21h ago

I've been working on developing the systems for a life sim a la The Sims 1 and 2, and I've got the core autonomy working, which was VERY satisfying. The dream is to build on the existing life sim format but with more scope for emergent narratives, and more room for challenge. For example, a challenge mode where the player doesn't build but instead lays out blueprints (rimworld style) for your sims to DIY, while also still managing their cash/needs/wants.

The Sims 4 shot itself in the foot a long time ago by not shipping with robust gameplay systems, which means the contemporary game relies on a steady drip of content from the devs. But the olders games hold up through dynamic systems like wants/fears, which both responds to what your sim is currently doing, and provides direction for what to do next.

I know in my heart my little program will never become a full game though, creating a sim game of that scope at an indie scale is an insane task, just the production of assets alone is a full time task, let alone managing ever increasing system complexity.

u/TheGreatMeowMeow 21h ago

The idea I've had for my dream game was a big 2D action RPG with a character friendship system similar to the Persona games, which allows the player to unlock new abilities. The main story would revolve around an amnesiac robot (the player) learning about humanity. I dont have a very solid idea of it so far but it's a long way to go until I can make something like that anyway lol

u/mullerjannie 21h ago

For me it’s logistics , I’m making something that takes logistics from capitalism and industry giant games, the colony volatility of oxygen not included , and the AI of Caesar and the majesty series with skill progression and rpg elements of ultima online and city building of settlers and economic elements of patrician series . I completed most of the logic using 3D but couldn’t get the art / 3D work done sadly. Just couldn’t get assets or pay for them . So busy porting it to 2D but also rewriting a lot of it since I learned heaps

I've kinda been in dial that it's my true dream game but at this point I really want to play it lol. I've been working on a game where you crew WW2 bomber(s) (currently only one works) with friends.

2

u/GenericPseudonym0 20h ago

It's currently beyond my skill, but I'd like to make turn-based RPG similar to Paper Mario TTYD. Battles would take place on a stage and wowing the crowd would be an important part of combat.

As for the story I imagine it to be something like Octopath Traveler, but with more party interaction. The characters act like they come from completely different genres but because of reasons, they've teamed up. Each party member has their own story arc and you can choose which order to do them in.

Sounds a bit crazy when I put it down like that, but I really want to make it someday.

u/WEIRDGAMER991 19h ago

ive always wanted to make a fixed camera survival horror, like a classic ps1 resident evil

2

u/Tenkai49 19h ago

Rimworld where you control one pal and the game has weapon with skills like moba (asdw movement, aim with the mouse)

Its what im programing now

2

u/neutronicus 18h ago

An RPG where combat is more like chess - the PC is the king and all other pieces are expendable.

Lovecraftian with summoned horrors, or maybe cyberpunk with a bunch of hacked battle drones. So the player has to ā€œtradeā€ in order to win combats, but it’s set up so that they aren’t losing out on progression or otherwise feeling bad about it.

2

u/jmach125 7h ago

I want to do the junction system from FFVIII justice. Putting magic on certain stats and switching limited abilities for specific fights are such cool ideas.

I think the way you'd have to implement it is roguelike with really hard hallway fights that force you to think about where you junction your limited rewards across a small party. Probably wouldn't use the word junction at all in the actual game though cos I don't want to get sued.

2

u/naghi32 11h ago

Already working on it !
As for what it is ? Hmm, think about satisfactory, factorio, dyson sphere.

2

u/DNCGame 10h ago

A game like Wuchang, but at the end main character can resurrect family or do whatever. I hate "dark deep" video games that have bad ending. Damn, player try so hard to play just end up something like "let go", "get a new life", "you are doomed" kind of ending.

2

u/Alzurana Godot Regular 10h ago

Dwarf Fortress/Rimworld factory game crossover but in a 3D voxel world and first person mechanics. Basically, you'd play a "hero character" in the colony and automation is key.

2

u/G-Rex_Saurus 10h ago

I have several dream games in my mind, but I will list one of them:

My biggest and main dream game would be a fast paced 3D platformer. It's basically like any other mascot platformer with PS1/N64 aesthetics and linear levels. I don't want to go into much detail, but that's exactly what I want to accomplish as a broke solo developer.

u/Roy197 Godot Junior 9h ago

Fps coop rogue like.

And I am kinda finishing it and it feels great.
