this is probably the best answer.

i love this chord in zeppelins “ten years gone” and often see it called Dm(add9)/A

nvm OP is playing low E as well my bad

u/andytagonist I don’t have my guitar handy, but here’s what I would do… 1d ago

Nah—low E is muted (far left of the diagram)

this is probably the best answer.

It doesn't take into account the inversion.

Why is it 9 instead of 2?

9

u/King_Moonracer003 1d ago

One octave up

13

u/MelodicPaws 1d ago

Nope its because the 3rd is in the chord

Thank you for this

Aren't stacked 5ths also a 9 chord?

4

u/stphrtgl43 1d ago

I know that but why is it used specifically in this chord name?

Octaves don't matter for chords name.

If there's no third, the 2nd takes it's "place" and it becomes sus2, if there's is a third, the 2nd is considered an extension and we call it 9.

Same with the 4th, if there's no third it's sus4 if there's a third it's called 11.

Also whenever you play extension it's implied that you play all previous extensions (for example in C11 you play the 7, the 9 and the 11).

Here we just want the 9 without implying the 7 so we call it "add9". It means just add the 9 and nothing more.

Thanks very much buddy! I got it, thanks, I'm really playing that chord while singing an F sharp, what do you think? And well I'm playing between that chord and an A major. And when I play the A major I sing the note of F

1

u/HillbillyMan 22h ago

Singing an F# over a chord that has an F natural in it is gonna cause a really dissonant sound. Are you sure those are the notes you're singing?

Trying not to be rude, but am I missing a joke here?

It´s an A with a major 7.

Amaj7

No?

3

u/BigDaddySteve999 1d ago

If that fretted shape were shifted one fret down toward the nut.

1

u/Programme021 1d ago

it's the same fingering but one fret higher. It's like a A#maj7 without the barre

-2

u/PupDiogenes 1d ago

Yep! If we're being specific, it's /E but that's the bass player's job!

Low E is muted per the diagram

3

u/DiogenesFont 1d ago

Yes, it's muted :D I start the strum from the A string.

4

u/Programme021 1d ago

/A you mean

It's a Dmadd9/A

u/MundaneRisk1786 1d ago

Finally! I needed something to do.

A F A D E are the notes, building a chord from each note's perspective

With A as root, 1 4 5 b6 Asus4addb6
With F as root, 1 3 6 7 F6maj7/A
With E as root, 1 4 b7 b9 E7b9sus4/A
With D as root, 1 2 b3 5 Dmadd9/A

Dmadd9/A is probably the simplest, and adding that you're emphasising F/F# with the vocals definitely sounds like a D minor thing to do

u/Opening_Spite_4062 1d ago

Why would you call the first one add b6 instead of augmented or #5?

2

u/Euphoric_Search_9499 1d ago

I don't see a reason to prefer #5 when 5 is also present. Idk. What makes it a raised 5th rather than a flattened 6th?

2

u/Opening_Spite_4062 1d ago

No thats probably a fair reason, it just sounded overly complicated, but I did not think about that. Now I actually tried strumming it and it feels lika an augmented chord with a melody note on top to me but that can be very subjective of course.

1

u/Euphoric_Search_9499 1d ago

I'm just carrying over the scale alphabet rule of not repeating a letter. My understanding of theory is a bit limited. When to call a note a 2nd vs 9th, or a 5th vs 12th in this case, I'm not too sure. Also unfamiliar with augmented chords in general, other than augmented power chords lol

1

u/Opening_Spite_4062 1d ago

Yeah Im sure my interpretation could just be flat out wrong, but I feel like if you dont have the context of a song or arrangement to put a chord like this in it can just be heard and interpreted any way you want to basically

5

u/PupDiogenes 1d ago

Those ways of spelling that Dm9/E chord are wild.

3

u/Snap_Ride_Strum 1d ago

Dm(add9)/A

5

u/DiogenesFont 1d ago

Come on guys, I meant something more simplified haha you made me laugh 😹

4

u/PupDiogenes 1d ago

fancy Dm

4

u/chouette_jj 1d ago

It's a Dm chord with a 9th and A on the bass

So you can spell it Dm9/A or Dm(add9)/A

To me the nuance is that Dm9 implies a 7th (C) which isn't in the voicing, while Dm(add9) just means play a Dm chord and add a 9th

1

u/InternationalLaw8660 1d ago

This is the answer.

-2

u/Financial_Rule_3455 1d ago

So overcomplicated.

It´s an A with a major 7. So Amaj7

2

u/Rothimus 1d ago

There is no major 7. The g string is being played on the second fret, so it’s an A, not G#

1

u/Financial_Rule_3455 1d ago

Oh! Sorry. I did miss something obvious. I loved all the fingers ones step down. My bad!!

1

u/jedipaul9 1d ago

I had to find this comment to realize I was wrong, too.

u/vonov129 Music Style! 1d ago

Fmajor13/A

1

u/jtyler0 1d ago

It's name is Klemp

1

u/Famous_Surround_7973 1d ago

If I'm not mistaken, it's a Fmaj7(add6)/A

1

u/Direct-Inflation8041 1d ago

Invert the d chord and move it up a string chord

1

u/_StarDust_0 1d ago

What site is this?

1

u/Queifjay 1d ago

Led Zeppelin - Ten Years Gone chord.

1

u/_alreph 1d ago

Depends on its context

1

u/Financial_Rule_3455 1d ago

Amaj7

It´s an A, wIth a major 7?

Or am I missing something obvious?

2

u/Dependent_Cherry4114 1d ago

The D and F from AFADE don't fit in a Amaj7 and there's no G#

BEATO

1

u/delta_mike_hotel 1d ago

This is a plain ol’ vanilla Amaj7

1

u/delta_mike_hotel 1d ago

Oops … that’s the 3rd fret, not 2nd. My bad.

1

u/Far-Construction-155 4h ago

Fmaj13, Dm(add9) or Asus(b6)
