Discussion I don't understand why Harry is secretive about his potions book.

Rereading HBP rn, and I don't understand why there is so much secrecy around the Prince's book. Harry is merely following someone else's notes. He's still making the potions himself, so how is that cheating? Also, Hermione should really get over herself, recognize that the "official" instructions are inferior, and ask for a copy of the book. Why do things the hard way. Finally, if Snape came up with all these better ways to brew potions and let his students struggle with the textbook versions despite that, he's a horrible teacher. Teachers shouldn't hoard their knowledge like that.

The only conflict about that book should be about the handwritten experimental spells.

Discussion Dumbledor didn’t have all hallows, right?

Hallow 1: The elder wand, which he got from defeating Grindelwald, and had for all his life.

Hallow 2: The stone, which he did NOT have until Harrys 5th or 6th year, if I remember correctly, because it was inside the ring

Hallow 3: The cloak, which he had for about 11 years, from the time the Potters died until Harrys 11th Christmas.

I’ve seen so many people saying that Dumbledor was the master of death (possession of all hallows) for those 11 years and I’m very confused because it is such an important piece of his lore that be wasn’t, right? Someone tell me if I’m right or if the stone was in his possession (with proof please)

Discussion Call me crazy but if Barty Crouch survived and was made minister instead of Scrimgeour, they would have got most death eaters by middle of HPB.

Main problem would literally be Dumbledore trying to ensure they win via his Master Plan©️ and not in another way.

The actual main problem under Scrimgeour was that they still focused on keeping good image. They went very easy on the enemy. Both in treatment of captured DE and in trying to get them.

And knowing Barty, nothing like that would happen. DE breaks from Azkaban and they make theirs headquarters at Malfoys, aka place that belongs to one of the most known DE. Noone worries enough to have the place searched.

Noone also worries to check on the folks that came when Voldy called them.

And when they sometimes stumble upon a DE, they try to just arrest the fucker (or knock him out as during the Seven Potters fight, or final fight in HPB) so he can escape and fight again latter, but with Barty in charge they would just kill them when they try to escape.

I think Dumbledore would still try to make sure that Harry and Ministry stay on bad terms, but I think Crouch have much better chance of striking a deal with Harry than Scrimgeour ever tried. Rufus basically went to Harry and said "Help. You have questions? Then fuck of." Barty, if nothing, was much more diplomatic and knew Harry in person.

Discussion Exams cancelled in Chamber of Secrets

I just rewatched the Chamber of Secrets and at the end of the movie (and I believe in the book too) they cancel the end of year exams. It got me thinking, doesn’t that basically screw over anyone who was set to take their O.W.L’s or N.E.W.T’s? Or are those tests considered different from the standard end of year exams. I just think that would be funny if you’re studying all this time and then just on this particular year they’re like actually nevermind!

Question What was a nondeath related moment that broke your heart? Spoiler

For me it was when Hermione, Harry and Ron accidentally took a deatheater with them to Grimauldplace after breaking into the minestry, breaking the fideliuscharm. The idea of Kreecher being tortured for information and then losing their only safe haven was so sad.

Discussion The use of unforgivable curses

On a human being is illegal. I was just listening to the Goblet of Fire audiobook when I noticed that distinction while Moody is talking. Which sort of implies someone could completely legally use them on say a house elf, or a centaur. What a horrifying distinction. I always thought of it as illegal to cast the spell period.

Discussion Why did no one ever just start calling Voldemort "Riddle" or make up some stupid nickname instead of cringing at his adopted name?

Did people not know or assume Voldemort was a nerdy made up, self-appointed name? Dumbledore knew, I figured he would have made it common knowledge.
Encouraging everyone refer to him as 'Tommy' would take care of what whole "fear of a name..." thing.
And to be fair 'Voldemordt' is not even made up - It's an anagram that he had to sit for hours and hours and try and figure out a name that sounded cool with the letters he could use.
Ok, there T-Ridz, take it down a notch.
What a dork.

Discussion Funny how everyone who wasn't a Death Eater and died in HBP onwards is all Fudge's fault technically

I mean seriously. If Fudge listened to Dumbledore and Harry from the start, Sirius would be alive, Dumbledore wouldn't have died in HBP, Moody wouldn't have taken a Killing Curse to the face, Tonks wouldn't have lost her father, Snape wouldn't have had to resume his double agent job and get killed as a result, Dobby would be alive, Colin, Lavender and every other student that died would be alive (I kind of prefer Crabbe to still die but you get my point).

Most importantly, Fred would still be alive and George would still have his twin.

Discussion Did Dumbledore know what the horcruxes were before asking Harry?

I keep thinking how in PS he said there are ways he can return for Voldemort but then in HBP he sent Harry on the quest to know the convo with Slughorn and was surprised by it.

If he knew, seemed like a pointless waste of time given where he was with his health.

Discussion Stan Shunpike should have recognised Harry immediately in PoA

Upvotes

According to the information given in HBP, Stan Shunpike is 21 years old in September 1996. This means that the absolute earliest he could have been born is September 1974, and as a result, he would have turned 18 sometime during the 1992-93 school year. This means he had only just left Hogwarts a short while prior to meeting Harry on the Knight Bus, and their time at school would have overlapped by 2 years. Given the age gap it’s entirely plausible that Harry wouldn’t have known Stan, but given the sensation Harry caused in his first two years it’s highly implausible that Stan wouldn’t have seen enough of Harry to recognise him on sight. Aside from anything else, he’s obviously highly taken with Harry’s celebrity so he would have taken an interest.

Discussion Do the books use "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" at any point past Philosopher's Stone?

I feel like "You-Know-Who" gets taken over as the premier term to call ol' Baldy Voldy by after the first book, cause I swear I can't remember anyone saying it except for in newspapers.

Discussion Just Watched the Movies for the First time at 29 years old

Never in my life did I think I would watch Harry Potter. As a kid idk what happened just never wanted to read or watch them. Grew up playing sports and watching sports. Never been a huge movie guy my whole life. I got on an airplane a month ago and to calm my nerves I put on a movie. Somehow I stumbled upon Harry Potter. When I tell you I am now completely obsessed, and already about to put back on the first one… all my friends and family are like you watched all of Harry Potter??? Never too old to fall in love with a movie series I suppose. Here’s how I ranked the movies… again I never read the books and went in with no knowledge at all. Happy to find this reddit btw!

  1. Goblet of Fire
  2. prisoner
  3. Deathly Hallows Part 2
  4. Order of the Phoenix
  5. Half Blood Prince
  6. Sorcerers Stone
  7. Deathly Hallows Part 1
  8. Chamber of Secrets (still wasn’t bad at all)

Discussion It makes no sense that a boggart can have the same effect on Harry as a real dementor

I’m sure this has been discussed before but I’m listening to PoA again and it’s ridiculous (no pun intended). It should not make Harry relive his parents’ deaths the way a real dementor does. By that logic, Lupin should have been turning into a werewolf every time his boggart took form!

Discussion Favorite Random Moment: Harry & Vernon's Deal

One of my favorite random moments in the books is in Prisoner of Azkaban, when Harry asks Vernon to sign his permission slip to Hogsmeade, and he promises him that he won't do any magic while Marge is visiting:

"But if you sign my permission form," Harry went on quickly, "I swear I'll remember where I'm supposed to go to school, and I'll act like a Mug -- like I'm normal and everything."

Harry could tell that Uncle Vernon was thinking it over, even if his teeth were bared and a vein was throbbing in his temple.

"Right," he snapped finally. "I shall monitor your behavior carefully during Marge's visit. If, at the end of it, you've toed the line and kept to the story, I'll sign your ruddy form."

The moment Harry treats this as a business deal, Vernon seems to meet Harry as equals and is even less angrier with him:

"St. Brutus's," said Uncle Vernon promptly. "It's a first-rate institution for hopeless cases."

"I see," said Aunt Marge. "Do they use the cane at St. Brutus's, boy?" she barked across the table.

"Er --"

Uncle Vernon nodded curtly behind Aunt Marge's back.

"Yes," said Harry. Then, feeling he might as well do the thing properly, he added, "all the time."

I just find this whole part interesting.
